20 year old anon here. How much do one's reflexes slow down by their 30s? I have a 33 year old friend who says he can still easily beat all the Megaman X games, but I thought by that age people's reflexes and mental processing slowed down too much to handle any but the easiest of videogames.

>> No.7301110

>>7301102
They do slow down a lot, from about 16ish. But it varies a lot from person to person, depending on general health and genetic factors. By 33 you could no longer set world records but you could still beat most normal games.

I'm 35 and have no problem beating MMX. Where I suffer is rhythm games that need super fast and accurate inputs. I get fatigued after about an hour or so. I can play just about everything else no problem.

No. Even at 80 you should still be able to play most games. You might struggle with bullet hells and certain genres, but even then with practice you could become an average player. As you get older you lose the ability to be great at something, not the ability to do that thing at all.

Put him in front of a mega man game he's never played and see how well he plays it compared to MMX. He's likely played through a few dozen times and knows how to wreck the game just from experience, rather than reflex. A lightgun shooter might be a better test of reflexes.

i'm guessing for some is that once you're in your 30's you're playing less than you used to and probably just blame age for the lack of skill. I'm 35 and never stopped playing competitive fighting games as a hobby and have frame perfect muscle memory.

the biggest change for me is that my hands hurt more if I am playing a game with poor ergonomics, ie. midway GB ports.

If you are worried about aging, then remember that your body is a temple; Make sure that you eat well, that you exercise, and that you get enough sleep. If you treat your body like shit, then your older years will be shit.

This, if guitarists and pianists can still play complex parts when they get old and grey then you can bet that you can still play games.

Reflex and reactions only degrade appreciably with age if not used/trained
If you never stopped playing games you'll be a tiny bit slower than a teenager but nowhere near as slow as someone who never played or dropped games in their twenties

I've only noticed this on fighting games. When I play my brother who is ten years younger than me, I can't remember the long strings I was able to pull of on Tekken or some of the setups on KoF but it might be years of lacking practice and taking care of a new toddler.

Reflexes don't really slow much over age. But what sometimes happens as you get older is you become more knowledgeable, such as learning the difference between reflexes and reaction time. For example, If you didn't just sperg out over being corrected you just got a little bit older and a little bit wiser.
Reaction times and how they change vary a lot by person but generally start to decline in your late teens. But the difference isn't much. It's not like someone who's 80 is 4 times as slow as someone who's 20. Unless you have some sort of medical problem you can probably expect an extra 25ms over that period, or roughly 10%.
You can train to improve your reaction times. I'm in my mid 50's and my typical visual reaction time is about 215ms. This is much faster than most people 1/3 my age. If you're 20, and mentally fit, and you train you can probably do better but like any kind of training it takes effort. Very for people are willing to make that effort.
You also react to different types of input as different speeds. My reaction time to audio is nearly 100ms faster than my reaction time to visual. With age and experience you can learn to take advantage of this. When my zoomie kid first got into fightan games he practiced a lot and worked on his reaction time but I would still easily hand him his ass. So badly so that he was convinced I was cheating. I was, in a way. I was listening to the sounds his controller made which game me nearly 1/10 of a second advantage.

I'm turning 35 this April.
I play csgo and I'm SMFC. I also play Street Fighter V competitively as an amateur online and offline.
I'd say my reflexes are still pretty sharp, whenever I test them it ends up within the 200-300ms range, which is the same as any csgo pro player, so not a problem at all with them.
I frequently save falling objects by picking them up before they fall.
Maybe it all has to do with me practicing martial arts all my life, but yeah, no problems in that field as of yet.

I'm 40 and the only thing vaguely like that that's gone wrong for me so far is that I now can get motion sickness from some first-person games sometimes. I haven't notice any loss of ability in any game except for that. I'm probably worse at something in some way, but I haven't actually seen it. I'm a better than ever in most ways; I have the patience and strategic skill to figure out ways to defeat bosses in action games that I never even saw as a kid because I'd give up early and move on to another game. I'm no expert at any game except MAYBE one or two obscure indie games that I really got into stupidly hard. I'm a generally competent player, same as I always was, except better thanks to adult patience etc. For what it's worth.

There definitely is a bit of mechanical slow down, but I play way smarter than I did when I was a kid. I'm quicker to pick up more advanced mechanics and understand the systems of a game better.

It's a myth about your reflexes getting "worse".
This goes from Dota pros to CSGO pros and even speedrunners.

The problem is that new blood comes in, and because they have played the game since they were born they can easily beat someone who is older than them.

After all, when did you start learning to play a competitive game? This goes for speed running as well because there will soon be speed runners who can play the game nearly frame perfectly.

It also goes for sports too, NFL, NBA, etc. Age has very little

however sports and esports and speedrunning has a much bigger problem. Drugs. The reason why pros are pros is because they abuse snus like crazy, some nicotine, some even meth and speed.
