Any good? There's only so much Doom and Medal of Honor I can play before I want something different.

The Playstation version of this game is honestly pretty shit. The Saturn version is the only one worth playing. Several levels had to become literal hallway platforming segments on Playstation and the framerate is some of the most inconsistent performance you'll ever see.

I prefer the Saturn version too but the best way to play the PlayStation version is with PowerSlave EX on PC, it got pulled down due to copyright but there are still copies of it floating around.

This. PSX version is massively gimped. Saturn advantages:

>full levels. on PSX there's anywhere from 5 - 30% removed from each level (performance/engine reasons)
>larger areas/rooms. *MANY* areas had to be made smaller on PSX (frame rate tanked too much)
>more intense and dynamic lighting effects on things like explosions/projectiles (example in pic)
>darker with more contrast, has more atmosphere (PSX looks washed out)
>better controls. they were changed slightly on PSX
>Death Tank (a classic hidden game but removed in PSX version)

Btw the PC version is a totally different game and much worse.

It was originally going to be called Exhumed but they couldn't secure it in the US. It is called that in Europe. They chose Powerslave in the US because they were Iron Maiden fans and it's sort of obvious.

I heard Lobotomy had a working port of the Saturn Quake lined up for release on the PSX and it supposedly run 10fps better than the saturn one but they couldn't find a publisher for it. Is this rumor true?

Disruptor was based. Probably the best console-exclusive Doom clone.

I was playing this on ps1 a couple months ago and was really enjoying it, but some of the later stages don't run very well and I seem to remember someone here talking about a pc port of the console version that I can't really seem to find. can anybody point me in the right direction?

Wait, the OG Medal of Honor has aged well? I played the ps2 one recently and wasn’t terribly impressed with the gameplay, and I figured the original wouldn’t have aged too well. I did watch a documentary on Medal of Honor recently and didn’t know that it was such a big deal back in the day and spawned the studios that would later make the big hitters in the industry. Is it and the sequel for the ps1 sorta like doom where they are timeless?

Try Lifeforce Tenka. It's pretty good and I'm sure it was the first FPS to show your ammo count actually on the gun.

In the Win98 folder look for Powerslave.7z, it has the PowerslaveEX port done by Kaiser (based on the PS version) and the PCExhumed port by sirlemonhead (derived from Eduke32) based on the DOS version.

good game, but surprisingly rough. I don't think Lobotomy did the best job they could with the port, the saturn version is definitely the best one. The last battle in particular has some wicked framerate drops. If you enjoyed the Saturn version enough try the PS1 version but don't expect a better game. Some of the remixed levels are pretty damn good too - I really like Lobotomy's level design style.

It felt great at the time but the rough edges REALLY show nowadays. You can literally outrun the engine loading map assets if you play well/fast enough, and many things feel unpolished. It feels like a beta compared to Goldeneye on the Nintendie. You can really tell it was made by an inexperienced team.
But the game is surprisingly fun despite all of those shortcomings and you can have a somewhat modern control scheme with a dualshock, available in the options menu (I thought the game was way easier than I remembered but it's probably because I played it with a digital only pad back in the day).

Saturn version's better... but also not because afaik you can't overclock Saturn emulators and all the hi res emulators are hacky, awful shit. Both versions have shitty framerates but OC'd and high resolution PS1 emulation is pretty trivial to accomplish. You'll just have a game with shittier maps and effects overall.

>tfw no EX version of the Saturn game
