Imagine LARPing so hard that you unironically pay several hundred dollars to replace your consumer set with a tiny PVM you can barely see from across the room for marginally better quality than S-Video which you can't even tell from that far away

PVMfags are the ultimate consoomers

Why would you be across the room from the tv? People played video games close to the screen because 1. It let you see what was going on with the low res graphics and 2. A lot of old consoles had short peripherals. Back when I was playing on consoles in the 90s and 2000s, I was either sitting down on the floor in front of the TV or had my own small TV in my room which I sat on the end of my bed to play, less than a yard away either time.

But higher TVL is not. It better represents the game. The KX-14CP1 (PVM 1390 in the states) was sold together with the MSX because it had a better TVL (450 lines).

Whoa, calm down. I agree that no PVM should cost more than 50$ and that 1000 lines is too much. But BVMs with 1000 lines were made just for color evaluation, not for viewing. 600 to 450 TVL seems like the sweet spot.

They are though. Developers used 240p as a hack of 480i to generate a non-flickering image. And on typical screens of the day the scanline effect wasn't pronounced. It generally looked "normal." They probably wouldn't have used 240p at all if a typical TV displayed it like a PVM with solid black bars running across the image.
