Why was this series so overshadowed and outperformed by Resident Evil and Silent Hill?

Personally I liked it more than either but I also recognize that's personal preference

>> No.7294838

Parasite Eve is one of my favorite series, along with Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but the only thing that they have in common is that they are all Playstation games. Parasite Eve is not a survival horror series.

The sort of 'survival horror with rpg elements' design was kind of a mixed bag for people.

when you put rpg elements that slow down the pace in a game that doesn't really need them you are going to have divided opinions, Simon's Quest and Zelda II could attest to that rule.

Never played 2, but 1 at least is definitely underrated. Different kind of game from RE and SH so it's not entirely comparable, but the combat was a lot of fun and the music was incredible. Characters were a lot more interesting than RE, too.

No, child, you are actually retarded. No one who played RE/SH for horror, played PE for horror. If you think that PE is a survival horror game in the same way that RE and SH are then you are severely mentally retarded.

Lol no, I don't think that horror is only allowed to be in a survival horror game. PE is at best a "horror themed" action rpg in the same way that RE4 is a "horror themed" action game.
I will argue that horror is primarily about atmosphere more than anyone else, but I just don't see it for PE. PE has always felt like scifi to me more than anything else. The inclusion of monsters does not make it horror.

this, there is literally not a single moment in PE1 that is designed to scare you. it doesn't even have jumpscares. it's just unnerving but that's different from scary.

I get the concept of body horror. body horror is not scary. I can watch an FMV of a dog mutating into a weird monster and think "man that's gnarly", but I'm not scared. when I play RE and some shit busts through a window or I'm getting stalked in tight hallways or a licker comes from the ceiling, I'm scared. it's a totally different emotion.

All of the gameplay elements are similar to the other two games but because the horror elements don't fit into your narrow autistic definitions it therefore isn't the same genre and not worthy of discussing these games together?

one of those series I really want to like but I just don't like the core gameplay, it's not enjoyable personally. music, atmosphere, writing, characterization are all great but I'm one if those ''gameplay trumps literally everything'' faggots so I can't seem to enjoy them. its really annoying but what ya gonna do. thats actually reminded me to buy the book though, thanks. good thread

>> No.7295326

There are no puzzles in the first game, and there is no resource management regarding ammo. You can maybe argue there is some resource magement with the limited inventory space and trying to juggle healing items though, but you are never concerned about ammo outside of maybe the first five minutes. Have not played the second yet.

Hi anons! Suzie Hunter here. Parasite Eve is one my favorite games of all time. True it isnt pure survival horror or pure RPG but is a fine middle point between the 2 genres.

Well for one, Resident Evil kinda the started the survival horror craze so of course it was overshadowed and outperformed by that, and Silent Hill evolved it in a different direction but was still survival horror. That said, Parasite Eve was also a action RPG so it probably wasn't exactly cut out for the survival horror craze. That doesn't mean it's inferior, just that it's a different experience. Personally Parasite Eve is one of my favorite games of all time.
I should also mention that it's not like the game did terrible when it came out. It was well recived and did good enough to warrant a sequel(which ironically tried a lot harder to actually fit in with the Survival Horror craze by copying Resident Evil, but it's also true that it had Resident Evil staff working on it to begin with.)

tl;dr Parasite was it's own beast that did quite fit in but it was still kick ass like that.

That's really interesting, I thought the gameplay was extremely tight in Parasite Eve and it's probably one of the best JRPGs available on the system, to each his own though.

Because you're comparing apples and oranges

Parasite Eve:
Action-jRPG

Resident Evil/Silent Hill:
Survival Horror

Parasite Eve 2:
Action-jRPG, with survival horror inspirations for a couple things but still just an action-jRPG

most people didn't want to read a biology book they wanted to shoot zombies

the slow pacing, the female protagonist, the lengthy dialogues, the cliche'd 90's cop characters, just wasn't really relatable to the PSX age group
