There's also "SSX On Tour" for PSP which, despite appearances, is a port of 3, rearranged and given a coat of paint in an attempt to resemble the console version of On Tour. I'm not even talking about the technical aspects of the PS2 port (I don't care much about that) but fuck this was one of those early games that came on a CD instead a DVD. The blue PS2 CD games were notorious for being rather loud inside the drive but this game for me was the absolute worst. Usually there's just a humming sound with these of varying loudness. But AOE2 inside the PS2 drive produced vibrations so strong that even the table the PS2 was placed on started to vibrate. You could even feel the vibration in your feet on the ground. I stopped playing this game since I was concerned about that it might ruin the dvd drive of my PS2.

I had a couple of these loud CD games (not counting the demo CD's of some magazines) like Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland and Squaresoft's All Star Pro Wrestling I and II with these problems, but this game was by far the worst.

It's not that hard to figure out. The native PS2 CD-ROM games just rotate at a much higher speed than the DVD games or the PS1 CDs when using the backward compatibility.
Or from someone at reddit of all places:
>The reason why is that DVD and CD rotate at different speeds in optical drives. 1x is the base speed for the lowest standard data transfer rate. The ps2 drive does 4x for DVD and 24x for CD. That means CDs spin 6x as fast, which means they make more noise. You can see this in a computer optical drive where CD tops out at 52x and makes a lot of noise, while DVD tops out at about 16x.
>DVD can transfer more data per rotation of the disc so they don't need to spin as fast to load a program into memory.
>The noise is vibration of the system from the drive motor, and vibration of the disc against air resistance.

But I guess this is only half of the truth why especially the Disc of AoE2 "behaves" that badly. Maybe the balance of the CD combined with its rotation speed is also a factor. I always cringe when I see people putting paper stickers on their optical discs (also libraries and rental shops did this), since this is a recipe for disaster. Well, the PS2 CD-ROMs at least don't used those but I guess at this high speed maybe even the printing on the disc (or if it's just slightly off-centered) could be become an imbalance or those blue/violet PS2 CD-ROMs just were made rather cheap? Who knows?

Thanks to the fact that it's a completely different game which is developed by completely different people, who probably just glossed over the plot and characters for the main game and then did their own thing with the material, I can imagine it's a lot better.

The PC game isn't great, though if you patch out all the bugs, and you patch out the companion AI, it's actually a pretty decent (if unremarkable) FPS. I hear the multiplayer deathmatch is supposed to be pretty good, I haven't tried it, but I'm willing to believe that given John Romero's fixation on multiplayer deathmatch, a fixation so great that it seriously affected the development of Doom 2, Quake, and Dai-Katana.
The man seriously made less levels for Doom 2 and Quake than he was supposed to because partially, he was so addicted to multiplayer deathmatch (one of the other reasons was him getting up to so many side projects).

The original non-expansion version crashed sooooooooooooooooo much. I still played the shit out of it and it left me with permanent "save anxiety". Always have multiple saves and save every 10 minutes or you'll lose everything. Also if you have too many saves you can't load any at all and the game becomes soft locked until you manually delete them outside of the game. PC suffered this issue too

Probably because it had PC infrastructure before Sony hoped on that train with PS4.
And when PS2 did get more ambitious PC ports, they were either compressed/cut up to fit the RAM (Max Payne, levels were segmented with more loading screens) or completely redone to work on the hardware (Splinter Cell)

There seemed to be several cases of Western-made PC games getting Japan-only ports for the PS1.

For instance, Beavis & Butthead in Virtual Stupidity, complete with a Japanese dub! https://youtu.be/dgKJCXRee4g

Other examples I can think of are the PS1 and Saturn ports of the DOS game Quarantine (called Hard Rock Cab and Death Throttle), the Saturn version of Phantasmagoria (just called Phantasm), and the PS1/Saturn versions of Dark Seed.

Yup, the longer you played, the more prone to crashing it was. Game needs to keep track of every single cell (location/room) - what’s contained within, what got looted already, which NPCs were killed and where to place the bodies etc. Basically shitloads of data, to the point the Xbox couldn’t handle it anymore and it’d crash randomly. Shame, because playing Morrowind with a controller is peak comfy. Guess you could uplod your save to PC every now and then to „wash” the file of needless clutter using some tools, but what’s the point when you already have a PC that can handle Morrowind? Even more pointless if you have some sort of a proper pad and the means to connect it to your computer. Still a better console TES game than that shitty N-gage dungeon crawler.

It's not really a very good game. It's interesting to look at, they actually licensed Giger's art and all to digitize and use in the game, so that's nifty, but beyond that it's a point and click adventure game, and a pretty bad one. It's the kind where the logic and procedure is kind of arbitrary and asinine, and you just have to figure out whatever non-intuitive thing to do when and in what exact order, and make sure to do it all before 3 in-game days.

Dark Seed is best enjoyed by watching a longplay on YouTube, you'll get all the good mileage out of it that way. There's a sequel, but I don't know if it's any better.

Not sure if this qualifies, since I'm pretty sure a lot of folks don't even know the original game, but this one's still kinda interesting - Hellboy: Asylum Seeker for PS1. https://youtu.be/tghmDDN0orw

It's a port of an earlier PC game called Hellboy: Dogs of the Night, which originally came out in 2000 (pre-dating the movies). This PS1 version came out in 2004. It's apparently the second-to-last non-sports game on the system.

Apparently the devs who ported this got the license for cheap and rushed out a quick port to cash in on the first live-action Hellboy movie. The original game's pretty janky, but the PS1 version is a complete mess, with tons of bugs and huge chunks of the game cut out entirely.

Not an official port, but some enterprising Chinese bootleggers actually ported Darkseed to the Famicom for some ungodly reason.

The Sims games on consoles are mostly trash, because they only have a tiny fraction of the content as on PC. Castaway is a gem though and very different from any other Sims game.

Technically it wasn't a port but it was really close to a GBA Tekken 3.

OK, so the plotline of Dark Seed 2 is that the main character from the first game, Mike Dawson is the prime suspect in a murder investigation. The thing is, Mike is a gigantic loser and gets shit on by basically everyone. Eventually shit happens and he has to travel to and from the Dark World in order to stop a beast known as the Behemoth (which looks nothing like you'd expect something called a "behemoth" to look). At some point, Mike visits a fortune teller at a carnival who tells him various hints. At some point, Mike learns that the last thing he needs to kill the Behemoth is in the Dark World version of his house and the only way in is through a portal in the same place. It's a mirror in the closet in his bedroom. He never tried opening it because his mom supposedly locked it when he was a kid, because he was afraid that monsters would come out of it. He never tried opening it since.
Also the true murderer in said murder investigation, who also murders Mike's shrink and Mike himself at the end of the game, is Mike's cooler Dark World counterpart, who's also a shapeshifter. And who may or may not be Mike's alter-ego. It's one of those endings
I recommend watching at least the last few minutes of a longplay or something. Some of it just needs to be seen rather than told.

>shooting/fighting isn't very fun, most of the weapons are dull and feel like they lack punch (you also only get four), and the monsters range from nothing special to being tedious
>exploration is lackluster
>puzzles are just a bunch of key and switch hunting, either really straightforward to the point of feeling like pointless busywork, or needlessly obtuse, throwing a switch and getting a vague message that something changed in some other barely specific location, or that you 'solved a part of a puzzle'
>pseudo-RPG trappings, but there's no real quests and no characters to interact with, it's like a long dungeoncrawl, except that it's boring
I'm sorry that I don't find it very engaging, but there's a lot of other games which have serious flaws which I find a lot more enjoyable than Hexen.
