Was at the store today and found copies of Sin and Punishment for the wii, 11 years after the game was released.
I know that's not retro, but it got me thinking there may be or may have been some pretty old shit still sitting in some bargain bin or something for decades.

Around 1997/98 I was at kmart in the electronics department and saw a boxed power glove on the shelf. The box looked like it was dropped off the side of a mountain, and there was like a dozen price stickers pasted on top of eachother marking it down $19.99 from something like over $100. Got it right away because I was a fan of The Wizard and fell for the whole marketing campaign for this thing back in the day.

I can only imagine the disappointment of kids who opened this up when it was new. The piece of shit barely worked and died after 2 uses. I still have it and it is quite aesthetic despite the shittiness.

All it takes is one box being placed in the wrong area, then getting written off as lost when they can't figure out where it is. It could easily go decades without anyone finding it, just because all of the boxes look identically and people don't have reason to check the labels of a random box. Not at all recent but a story worth telling - mid-to-late 2000's there was a comic book shop near me that sold some games, and had a shrinkwrapped Link's Awakening Deluxe (GBC) sitting there collecting dust at normal retail price. I was still a broke kid with pennies to my name but even then i knew that shit would be valuable af one day. I wish i had begged my parents or something.

I'm sure I've seen PS2 and GBA bargain bin shit at WalMart long after they were relevant, but I can't remember specifics. Other than that, i recall seeing a GameGear copy of The Lion King at a Toys R Us in either the late 90s or early 00s. Probably the early 00s because it really jumped out at me as surprising that they still had a copy.

Almost as crazy is that whoever bought it didn't run to the internet to make it widely known that he got an NOS GG game from TRU.

Nah, the box isn't even sealed and even if by chance some kid opened it up and stole the game inside, they'd first have to get passed the plastic security case toys r us would have had it inside.

That shit's staged or the game was jacked by an employee, who was dumb enough to steal on the retail floor, instead of the backroom. Also as someone who once worked retail, you ARE expected to at least try to limit the amount of filth that collects under those shelves. And believe me, it collects fast.

After seeing this post I went to the toyrus in my city this weekend for shits and gigs and looked under the shelves. As I suspected they were caked in years of dirt staining the floor black and brown. Didn’t find any stuff though. Also the box is clearly sealed in the photo you can see the plastic wrap in the top left corner. But thanks for your expert opinion as a Walmart greeter.

Toyrus is still open in Canada. Although it looks dead as it has not gotten a single update even in signage since the main US company closed.

>> No.7300948

When my local Toys R Us was about to permanently close back in June of 2018, I checked the video games aisles one last time. The shelves were entirely barren with nothing on them at all. So I had the idea of pulling the shelves up to see what was laying underneath there. Aside from tons of dirts, grime and dust underneath due to never being moved or cleaned the 20/21 years my Toys R Us had been there, I found a ton of old game tickets for GameBoy, SNES, N64, PS1, GBA, GameCube, DS, etc. I also found a sealed PS2 game demo. The staff let me keep it so it was covered in dirt/dust and they couldn't sell it anyway.

Yes, now the equivalent are reddit sőys who buy shit for e-cred and wealthy normalfags like pic related who think videogames are their ticket to big profits so they can buy a sportscar. Genuine nerds who buy for the love of it are at the very bottom of the collector totem pole now, and in many fields are well on their way to being priced out of their hobby.
