I just installed FreeMcBoot and OPL onto my Australian PAL console using FreeHDBoot and an official network adaptor + SATA HDD. All that went perfectly, but there's one major problem, my PS2 can't display anything other than PAL 50hz.

I can't seem to force 60hz NTSC through GSM, FreeMCBoot config or the built-in GSM option of OPL. All I get is blank, uneven screens of solid blue if I try to use NTSC.

The isos I'm trying to boot from OPL are all NTSC. I'm not trying to force 60hz on PAL games.

I've tried this on multiple different monitors, my CRT (which I know for a fact can display 60hz because I run my Wii on it at NTSC 60), and with both composite and HD Retrovision Component cables. For my monitors, I'm running the PS2 through a Retrotink 2X-Pro, but straight to input on my CRT.

Any idea what the problem could be? I have zero issues booting PAL isos from OPL. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also plan to play NTSC games on my PAL PS2 with the help of FMCB. Can somebody confirm it is possible without a modchip? OP did you change the output to YUV in the PS2 Menu?

I've heard of so many people being able to play NTSC shit on softmodded PAL ps2's with no problem, so I have no idea what my deal is.
And yea, I changed my output to Y/PB/PR

Yes, it should work https://www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10490&p=44939&hilit=gsm+ntsc#p44939

I have no idea what's going wrong. My CRT does both 50hz and 60hz and I've tried every option with OPL and GSM. I've even reinstalled freemcboot twice just to be sure. I get sound, but never any video

>> No.7289986

Even just changing the video mode in an app to NTSC makes me lose signal. This happens on every monitor I own, wtf. Am I the only one on the planet with a PS2 that's locked to PAL?

idk man, try the RGB setting instead of ypbpr with both cables.

The same happens when I switch to ypbpr when connected with a SCART cable to a PAL TV.

try using an RGB SCART cable. My CRT displays NTSC in Black & White over Composite.

Make sure to manually select the Video output in the PS2's settings. It can act retarded and decide RGB is Component or vice versa if left to its own devices.

Who else is super bummed that POPSTARTER will never have full compatibility, and the project was abandoned because of drama between homebrew devs. What is it with homebrew devs and drama? The PS2 + FreeDvdBoot / FreeMcBoot + a cheap usb drive is so close to being the perfect PS1 machine on the cheap but we will never get there now. Feels bad man

>> No.7290389

>>7290261
agreed, but a modded ps3 with a 2Tb drive could hold most of the PS1 library, with some compatability loss

>> No.7290453

>>7290261
No I don't think the PS2 has the juice to reach full compatability there were always going to be problems. I don't have much modding knowledge but I recall Wii modding being in a similar situation with playing Gamecube backups in the earlier days, was said it couldn't be done because the Wii's Gamecube 'mode' gated off the needed functionality for playing backups but here we are today afaik Nintendon't has near perfect compatability and supports things the Wii could never when just playing GC games from a disc like emulated memory cards and alternate controller support. That leads me to be skeptical Popstarter is really the best the PS2 can do as far as playing PS1 backups digitally

>> No.7290483

>>7290453
i thought slim ps2 uses strictly emulation for playstation games.

>> No.7290495

>>7290483
You're right but it's still special hardware dedicated for that that I recall always being explained that Popstarter us somehow not able to access. If that weren't the case you would assume Popstarter also would be at slim PS2 backwards compatability levels

From what I gather, the same chip used for I/O (network, hdd, and usb) is also the main CPU for the PS1 "mode" on the PS2 which the PS2 runs in when you put in a PS1 disc, with perfect compatibility. So it's not possible to play backups of PS1 games in that mode since it requires I/O (to read the .bin/.cue or .vcd) to happen alongside the PS1 CPU stuff. There's no room. Of course, that could be bullshit, and somebody tomorrow might announce they made a homebrew for PS2 which runs PS1 backup files natively without emulation.

>> No.7290530

>>7290261
I agree

Instead I had to put together a ps1 with a xstation ode and a ps1digital hdmi mod...

Probably $300 or so...

That wouldn't be a great option for me, because I obsessively like my game saves to be accessible over FTP so I can quickly and easily convert them to Vita saves with a script I wrote and pick up my games on the go. Having to plug in an SD card and manually rename files / run them through a converter drives me bonkers when I can otherwise just turn on the PS2 and Vita and run one command on my PC and have the savefiles synced.

Fuck you have that fan in the back for?

>> No.7290643

>>7290543
Also it doesn't even save to sd cards, just the memory cards

So you have to use a ps2 to get those saves to a flash drive, then convert them to a vita format. It's a pain, I did it for FFVII

Jeez, the xstation still needs you to fiddle with memory card saves instead of saving to the SD? I guess it makes sense, it's only simulating the optical drivie, but what a hassle.
