There's nothing wrong with a good JRPG, pic related. The problem is nintendrones have the worst possible taste in JRPGs, touting the shittiest SNES JRPGs as "the best games ever", when they aren't even remotely close to the same level. This is because the shit SNES was so bottlenecked that the hardware was technically incapable of anything else, so the library was inundated with JRPGs, yet inexplicably it was still completely curbstomped by the Mega Drive and PC Engine in that genre, and the Amiga in CRPGs and strategy games.

I never said that. I did, however, say that they are designed for children and manchildren who do not value their time and play video games mainly as a time waster. They fall into the same category as mobile games.

Who is the JRPG for? The gamer who wants a good story? A memorable experience? A mentally stimulating challenge? A thrill? A social multiplayer experience? No, the JRPG has none of that. The JRPG is for people who want nothing more out of their video game than to perform a mindless task repeatedly and watch numbers go up as a result. It's the most base kind of "entertainment" for people who want nothing more out of their game than to click buttons and receive a dopamine hit.

Some people fall prey to skinner box mechanics when they are inserted into other types of games. But the JRPG fan is someone who actively seeks them out. For the JRPG fan, the skinner box isn't a bug, it's a feature.

JRPGs are a genre which focus heavily on story, yet the stories are almost universally childish and poorly written. JRPGs also have very childish and simple gameplay compared to their western CRPG counterparts.
