/CRT/ general: missing badge edition

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I have an odd issue with my FW900. I've had it for close to a decade and never noticed this, but it could be I just haven't seen it before and it's not a new problem.
When running at higher refresh rate (120hz) there are very faint, flickering horizontal lines that may affect just the bottom half of the screen (or are less noticeable on the top half). It's very faint and only very noticeable on block colours but quite distracting. I recently calibrated the set using WinDAS and I suppose it could theoretically be that I set a voltage too high or something like that. If anyone can explain this please do.

I have one of those amplified RGB switches that allow you to have multiple outputs at once. I'm looking to use this for recording, and since analog RGB capture cards are really expensive I've figured it would be better for me to get an upscaler and a cheap HDMI capture card. Yeah I think if he wants to preserve the quality he's going to be spending a couple hundred bucks over all.
The capture cards have gotten so cheap, you can find elgatos used for less than a hundred bucks and they're genuinely fantastic, we used them for covid television production to run camera feeds into laptops and over zoom so our producers could remotely conduct interviews and they never let us down across hundreds of interviews.

>> No.7286396

yeah the two routes I see to preserve quality would be a retrotink rgb 2x upscaler into an hdmi elgato, or an rgb to component/composite transcoder into an old SD elgato, which will both cost at least a hundred bucks total

retrotink is a good company (based in San Diego, gotta love those beer drinking orca bullies) but i don't really know how their 2x scart measures up to the OSSC. It's probably just as good and it'll certainly be easier to get

And an OSSC is like 120$ which is not that bad, and HDMI capture cards are really cheap since it's pretty simple to capture a digital source. Not him, but no. I had a Toshiba much newer than that (1999) die suddenly about 3 months ago, and it was a whole lot cleaner and well-kept than that thing. Yours probably hasn't been taken good care of, and it's really old. It'd be like rebuilding the engine of a rusted-out PT Cruiser.

I dont remember the exact year, I want to say early to mid 2000s, maybe 2005ish 2006ish. I like it a lot, I believe I was working retail at this time and in electronics the crts were slowly phasing out and I saw less curved screens and more of these, then i first started seeing the early hd flat tvs.
I like this particular tv a lot with my retro gaming, I dont have a ruler in me but I think this is a 15 to 17 inch screen. Colors are vibrant, not like my old sharp crt tv that was off color at the bottom right corner (probably from age it was a mid to late 90s model, i no longer have it). Most console televisions either don't have shelf space at all or have those tempered glass cabinets. It isn't, and the comeback of vinyl and, to a less extent cassettes and the high demand for the Analogue Pocket along with the increase of GBA modding is the proof of it. Do I have to buy one of those splitter boxes?

My usual setup is two consoles hooked up to a switch box with composite, and then the video out goes to my CRT and the audio goes to my receiver for my sound system.

I've got the HDMI out of the receiver hooked up to the HDTV and a capture card. I wanted to be able to display my old games on both TVs so I can record my gameplay and shit. I bought a splitter which is coming out of the switch box, and then from there it goes to both the CRT and the receiver. The problem is that once I hook up to the receiver the picture gets all dark and distorted.

Something like this just seems overkill if I just want to amplify the signal to be able to output to both TVs, and I'm not even entirely sure if that's the issue here.

Gen 6 video can be fuckin weird, including the Xbox
About a third of the games can work in 16:9 and a handful can even run in 720p, so yeah those aren't going to be compatible with a lot of sets. The fact that Microsoft had to release the HD Pack just shows how quickly technology was changing during gen6.
Microsoft did release official component cables back in the day, I'd imagine they might cost a bit nowadays, but if you can run those straight into your TV it'll look great - if you're after that nostalgic CRT look
If you just want to run the higher video qualities out of every game, then do what most people do, just use a Pound HDMI cable and call it a day

I've never understood why PC CRTs consistently don't support 15KHz. They support large ranges of resolutions and refresh rates, but as soon as the horizontal refresh rate goes below 30 or 31KHz, it's off limits. They'll let you do crazy things like display 4000x240 at 180Hz, but it's not possible to do the same thing at 60Hz, which doesn't really make much sense.

It just would have been a lot more convenient if they would have worked with 15KHz

lots of tv lines
lots of input variety
lots of fiddly little settings you can tweak
trinitron tubes (which lots of consumer sets have as well)
they were designed to run 24/7 in like hospitals or broadcast centers or whatever, so if you take care of them they'll last for decades

Plus they're just a neat piece of broadcast tech

If you get any other CRT with Trinitron tubes and component + svideo inputs, you're like 90% of the way there. Plus it'll probably be a bigger set, PVMs are small - most PVMs out there are 14", with 20" models being out there but a bit more rare.

For older content, it's actually really good because 480p displays on it quite nicely, and it has custom color controls which you can use to boost the brightness above normal without compromising black levels, which is helpful if you're using emulation since some of the methods used to make 31KHz monitors display a 15KHz resolution usually cut the brightness in half.

What if the CRT voltage was increased past safe levels? Can the electronics fail in a way that allows this? Or will the set simply burn out and stop working?

I think have managed to trip the brightness protection circuit in my CRT by using the "high" mode usually reserved for looped video to increase the overall brightness of my screen. This causes a red blooming/ghosting effect if the contrast is set too high, so I just back it off until the effect goes away. But it caused me to wonder. On a completely white screen it will quickly dim itself.

I think people have gotten so used to flat panels that modern furniture arrangements don't take CRTs into account anymore. It was super common in the 90s to have big units, sometimes even matching the TV itself, fill a corner or wall of a room. Nobody really takes into account something with that kind of footprint anymore so the space is arranged differently. Finding a place for a 32inch CRT so it doesn't get in the way could require new feng shui. Most people probably don't even have furniture meant to support the weight of a CRT these days. It's pretty much impossible to find 4:3 versions of movies after I think the 70s, so all the downloads you see are the widescreen version, with the earliest ones being more like 1.66:1, so they're between 4:3 and 16:9. The thing is, most remasters are poor upscales that just look bad on my 55" LCD. It probably looks fine on a smaller one, but I enjoy the nostalgia factor. There's something about watching/playing content of a certain era on the best tech from around that time.
I'm thinking about doing the same for music. Anything released up to the invention of cassette would be listened to on vinyl, and then the same for cassette, and once I reach CD I'll have to search for when the first digital player was released and use my phone for that.
So, vinyl up to 1963, cassette from 1963 to 1982, CD from 1982 to 1996, digital from 1996 onwards.

Sorry your job, which is probably working at a fucking restaurant as a busboy or some other peon shit, was lost to try and prevent even more people from dying. Saying "covid ain't shit" when it kills more than the flu and has permanent lasting effects such as loss of taste or fucked up lungs is absolutely ignorant. Nearly the whole god damn world besides the US has taken it seriously by now, but Americans are too fucking stupid and prideful to take precautions.
