Might as well post Getsu Fuma Den.
Great action-adventure game. If you've played TMNT, which came out later, many things will be familiar, or even identical. I believe TMNT was made based on this game.

Protip: get the candle and use it in the faux-3D maze sections. Also, in the later maze, draw maps on grid paper. I still got mine.

KID are gold, every action game they developed has chars capable of huge screenhigh jumps, weird modular 'collect enough of this to level up' weapon systems, and a great combination of using melee and firing - both are equally useful. There's always so many gameplay elements, at the expense of framerate/animation but still.. Both GI Joe games, Low G Man, and Kick Master follow this mould. I never liked GI Joe Atlantis Factor as much til I realised you just play it like Kick Master and melee goons, you can even do a punch combo. Guns are most useful on big shit/bosses, rather than in the first which feels like the whole game favours them. Oddly satisfying when you level melee and become capable of cooler moves - Kick Master being based on this entirely.

Isolated Warrior and Burai Fighter lack the melee and jumping obviously, but keep the weapon systems, being shmups. IW even has a bunch of level variety. Yep, i'm thinking KID are based.

Cross Fire is a neat as fuck Contra clone that somehow missed a western release. You start out with fists and throwable grenades to hit background shit. Break certain boxes to git gun, somehow the power of obtaining an automatic firearm heals you just like in real life. Git more gun for better gun. Also our protagonist seems to have an extreme dislike for mobileshit, as pictured.

Made it to stage 5 out of 6 on my first playthrough when I accidentally hit reset.

Seems shit and hard at first but it's a decent enough game once you get the hang of it.

Action platformer but you get to turn into a flying dragon for a brief period of time and when you do the game autoscrolls.

Otherwise it's hack&slash but you also get a charge shot.
You can also swap to 2 other colours with power ups and that changes your charge shot but also the kind of shots the flying dragon shoots.

Protip: the blue form seems to the best
Protip 2: you have to fill up an energy bar to be able to transform into the dragon. it fills up when you kill enemies, but that doesn't happen if you kill them with a charge shot

Trying this now and it's a decent game I guess, but the musics and sound effects are dog shit.
Also, the controls are kinda weird. Diagonal to the right= walk and shooting diagonnaly at the same time. Diagonal to the left = stand still and shoot up. Makes me feel like my pad is broken.

Also some backgrounds enemies (vehicules) can be hard to see and most of the projectiles (grenades, rockets) flicker a lot more than they thought. Looks like they ran the flickering routine for stuff by default "just in case" when in reality in many cases it wouldn't even be needed.

More of a nitpick but jumping down a hole and getting hit by enemies you couldn't see straight away kinda sucks and happened several times

still i've seen worse, game is okay I guess

Megaman 5 is surprisingly enjoyable. Everything after 3 is often overlooked, but 5 is actually quite competent. It brings back the fast pace of 3 with lightning fast screen transitions and far less slowdown than that game. Using the menu is also a lot faster too. The charge shot works better than it does in 4 and also doesn't compromise the enemy health by making them bullet sponges like 4 does. Yes, getting hit will remove your charge but I see it as a fair balance for how powerful the buster is in 5. The level design in 5 is also enjoyable and unique. You get to mess around with low and reverse gravity, riding bubbles, a cool jet ski section and so on. The game is just clean fun. It is crazy how they go back to very slow screen transitions in Megaman 6. That game also screwed up the way sliding works. 6 is still enjoyable in its own right though.

>of the initial 6 stages bosses, I killed 5 with the full transformation
>entered the final boss room with full transformation, half of its time left

Also
>full transformation timer still goes down during cutscene at the start of final boss
>during the cutscene after killing the final boss, robot helper gets destroyed by the collapsing ceiling tiles

Robot helper just can't get a break

Yeah the diagonal thing and just the unbalancedness of losing gun levels on death when you've got to beat a boss that requires so much shooting up at multiple targets gets me. Just thought the game earnt points for being an jap only run and gun if anything. Do like the main char's outfit changes from level to level.

Indian jones and the temple of doom is actually a really good game. You may not know what the fuck is going on at first, but once you get the controls down, its extremely fun.

Super street fighter 2010 the final fight is an amazing game. I know avgn shit on it, but the game mechanics are impeccable, may be a bit hard to get the hang of at first, but its worth it imo.

Ninja jajamaru kun has a very arcady feel. Similar to donkey kong, but its als great in its own right and deserves some love... And you can get a giant frog to ride.

Metal storm is hard as balls like street fighter 2010, but its got interesting mechanics and a hellofa soundtrack. Definitely worth a shot.

Sqoon is a nice little arcady game that tends to get overlooked these days, as is elevator action.

Been looking into Shatterhand's RAM map

Here are some fun facts:
Ninja boss has less HP in the final stage than he does in his original stage. 48hp instead of 64.

Bosses HP vary from 32 to 64.

A small punch deals 1 dmg
A big punch deals 2

When wearing the red clothes: small punch= 2dmg, big punch = 5 (!) dmg

During the full transformation damage output of the flame shot vary from 1 to 4 depending on how close you are to the enemy.

If you want to cheat:
Ram adress 0005C4 gives you the letters, and with the right values put in, the robots:
15: AAA
16: BAA
19: ABA
1A: BBA
25: AAB
26: BAB
29: ABB
2A: BBB

Address 0005C2: Full Transformation timer. Put in a value and freeze it and you'll be invicible with the full transformation forever

0005C5: protag HP
0005C6: Gold
0006F0: Boss HP
0006F9, 0006FA, 006FB, etc: enemies HP

00071C: Lives

>> No.7296325

>>7296274
One last thiing:

address 0005C8 determines whether you're wearing green or red suit. You're allowed 3 hits before red turns back to green.
Value 00: green suit
value 01 to 03: red suit

0006FC: Robot Helper HP. Starts with 16HP

Any hit to the robot = -1 HP. When the robot gets in contact with an enemy, that enemy also loses 1HP (like the full transformation contact).
Starts to blink when it has 3 HP left
When the robot spawn backs at the end of a full transformation, its HP is replenished

I've seen situations where, when picking up the same 3 letters when the robot's HP was low, it'd respawn the robot instead of leading to a full transformation; but I can't reproduce it and now I'm convinced it's a glitch; which may be caused if there are too many enemies on the screen + the robot, as it seems that the ram addresses of robot and enemy can potentially be on the same ram address (I believe the next thing spawning just takes the next free address)

It appears bosses and enemies don't have less HP in Solbrain after all. The thing is, the same one enemy may have slightly different HP depending on which stage it is? Not sure either on that one yet.

Also, red vest big punch = 4dmg, not 5.

They released Digital Pinball Last Gladiators and Necronomicon on the Saturn, they are exactly like Super Pinball 1-2 except very heavily souped up. Hi-res, cd-audio, tables have twice as many features, 7-ball multiball, and prog metal soundtrack with John Petrucci of Dream Theater doing the intros.

Probably my favourite pinball games.

They then did Akira Psychoball on PS2 which is just insane, it has 1 ball shared on two tables.

Yup, same company, same 'franchise'? The Japanese version is Super Airwolf which you're gonna want to play for dat theme tune in the first level which the western version doesn't have. Alternate levels are top down run and guns with an incredibly weird 'jump' button that jumps your guy toward the camera and lets you hit stuff on higher planes. Also does that thing Master System run and guns do where moving down aims you up so you can return fire while backing up - I like it, myself, and you're only gonna want to fire up. Better game than the NES one, at least while I can't get past that bastard stage 3 tank in it.

Looking more at Shatterhand/Solbrain I think I have proof that Shatterhand was made first.

Character sprite uses 2 palette slot in Shatterhand, one for the top, one for the pants, but only one palette in Solbrain... yet, the 2nd (unused) palette slot in Solbrain is still set to the pants colours.

Also, if you simply replace the character sprite from the stage select screen in Solbrain by the one in Shatterhand, the animation will play (despite the Solbrain one being unanimated)

I played through that sometime within the past couple of years. I'd never played it as a kid (or I did play it as a kid and thought it was cruddy and forgot about it). I was prompted to do so by a Cinemassacre video in which Bootsy and another guy (either James or Mike) played it for a bit and kinda trashtalked it. It actually looked clever and interesting in the video (albeit also kinda cruddy), so I thought maybe they were missing something.

It is indeed actually good. You're right, the levels are more bland and samey than they should be. That's one of the major flaws of the game. I think another one is that the controls and/or combat were somewhat awkward, or something like that. And the game is generally pretty ugly-looking. But given a generous and tolerant player, it can be really fun. The exploration and character growth are interesting and it's clear that the designer really cared about it. I had a good time with it. It has a playful, witty feeling to it, kinda like Maniac Mansion.

Make of that what you will.

The entire Shatterhand staff is credited as "special thanks" in both games; all 3 games also have the same sound designer.

Now that I know Shatterhand's ram map a little bit, I decided to check both Choujin Sentai Jetman and Mistume Ga Tooru.

Both games have what looks like the same system to draw graphics onto the screen and in all 3 games it's located at the same RAM addresses.

The sound/music system is also identical and located at the same RAM addresses for Shatterhand and Mitsume Ga Tooru.

Couple of other things look like they follow the same kind of logic also but not located in the same places, but I can't say if that means much.

It's possible that Shatterhand was inspired by Batman but since they're different companies it's unlikely the later was based on code of the former. I checked anyway and the RAM map and logic seem completely different.

The Krion Conquest. It's good, but it's almost a Megaman sprite hack.

Metal Storm. An action game where you need to change gravity to advance.

I played through it as a kid. I liked it well enough then but it was too bland to become a favorite of mine. It is indeed competent. It isn't really a Mega Man clone - it lets you transform to use different abilities, but you spend magic points to transform, and then you don't spend any more to shoot or fly or whatever. Kinda the opposite of how Mega Man does that sort of thing. Also there's little or no character progression as I recall. I think you start with all your spells, and you keep those throughout.

The action is fine but there's nothing very special about it. The standout features are the transformation spells, which are cool in concept but nothing super exciting in practice, and the impressive bosses, which are dazzlingly big and detailed by NES standards.

Haha I forgot how much they changed the human characters. Allison is vastly more appealing as a realistic-looking person instead of an anime-looking chibi-beast.

It's not even about difficulty. They just straight up made the game unbalanced in a way that isn't fun in the English version.

Funny enough, I only own this because I'm retarded, and thought I was buying an Action 52.

You reminded me of Fudou Myouou Den with this post. Badass motherfucking game, but difficult at first. North America got Demon Sword as a hacked apart port, but the original is one of the best Famicom/NES games ever made. Also has some dope box art.

That was such a strange leap in difficulty. The whole game is this whimsical 4/10 chillout experience, then at endgame you have these legit 9.8/10 levels. It's great, but just kinda weird.

Flying Warriors. Everything is kinda weird in this game, in a good way. You have to play in expert mode to be able to fight the real final boss and see the true ending.

That's weird. I could swear I played a Jurrasic Park on NES that had first person mazes, they were very crude. Maybe it's the beta version this anon is talking about ?>>7320865

Or I'm mixing up two different games that I played around the same tilme as a kid.
