There has never been a 2player coop game better than this

I’d hope there is, that one isn’t very good

It's pretty good, though I'd say Zombies Ate My Neighbors is better, though it's too hard to chill with a friend, you gotta tryhard.

The goal is to collect pieces to your space ship so the both of you can go back home. You do this by exploring maps and avoiding enemies. To help you, you can collect items. The items are in presents, and you don't know what they are until you use them (or get them identified at the cost of money), but once you use one, you know what that one is because all similar items are in similar boxes (unless you use the randomizer, which resets everything). To make the game more interesting, there's an option to play procedurally generated random levels. There's also experience and a level system that reward you with more health.
The game itself is fairly challenging, and a lot of fun to play with two players.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a solid pick as well. I'd add Bubble Bobble and Rescue Rangers for the NES. As kids, my brother and I would play that game competitively, constantly trying to fuck each other over. Never beat it co-op but did beat it single player multiple times.

That's the point. It's a masterpiece, though very of it's time and probably not one that can be replicated easily.

I would like to nominate pic related as an honorable mention. Had a ton of fun playing this with my brother growing up.

It's odd there was a time when western release box art changed shitty 3D renders for hand-drawn artwork and not exactly the opposite.

Walk around, explore each level
Find presents and open them for different effects
Avoid weird and dangerous humans
Look for the rocket parts and the elevator to the next level
That's pretty much it
