Living room set-up, was initially set on buying a Mister to play Neo-Geo and Snes titles, though I saw that the Series S can emulate with run-ahead and shaders, etc. Is there any real advantage to using a Mister if both cost the same amount? I know Mister is "cycle accurate", though fine with 99% accurate as long as input lag is the same. Both cost roughly the same for me and would be on a flat panel TV.

Find out if input lag on the Series S is the same as it is on Windows/Linux. Because Microsoft run games on xbox under a VM, and that VM is running CLR code for UWP version of RetroArch. It doesn't necessarily mean there's extra input lag, but it definitely sounds like there would be.
The Mister on the other hand will give you console-like input lag out of the box meaning that any game that isn't runahead friendly will still work just fine. I was using RetroArch on a stock win10 recently and without a 120Hz monitor, runahead 1 wasn't quite console-like, had to go to 2 and not many games like 2...

Getting the dev mode set up is a bit of a pain. I did it myself.

What's the point when you could just use literally any other PC?
Not like the SS is particularly cheap or easy to find anyways, and switching between dev and retail mode is an additional pain in the ass.

2011 in fact. 60Hz Samsung TV. Not at home right now.

I'll look into that, especially since my TV is one of the fake 120hz types. Thanks

If you think there are any mister cores that are cycle accurate you will be sorely disappointed.

Yes, absolutely. Once you get the mainboard, the add-ons, a case, you're paying almost as much as a Series S.

Series S is plug and play. Also has Game Pass.

You can pay $20 to enable dev mode and install RetroArch, you dingus.

The SeS is 300$ + 20$ for dev mode, comes with a controller and it’s tiny. It has a lot going for it.

Get a Soibox if you want to play tranny simulators like Soiberpunk, get a MiSTer if you have any self respect and just want to play Based & Redpilled games without the Microsoft jew logging all of your activities.

>> No.7282305

I was considering buying a MiSTer, but was wondering if it was worth holding off on some of the add-on boards. Could I just start with the DE-10 Nano, IO board, and a power supply, then leave the RAM and USB hub for later?

why wouldnt you spend the extra money for the black trash can so you can also play cheap xbox, 360, and one discs as well?

People say this all the fucking time and it baffles me. If you want to emulate games in your living room on your big TV, having to drag your PC back and forth is a fucking pain in the ass. It's nice to have something dedicated there. And while you could get something like a raspberry pi, those suck, wouldn't get you 6th gen and wouldn't allow the use of nice CRT shaders like CRT Royale at 4k. You need something decently powerful for that. So why not get a console that has it's own library of games that also allows you to emulate at decent fidelity?

You should at least get the 32MB ram board. They're cheap now. The only reason you really need the 128MB is if you care about the NeoGeo.
You can absolutely skip the USB board. It takes a little bit of research but you can buy an external USB hub equivalent for $25. That's what I did. Works great.

Price/performance ratio. I doubt you can find any consumer device period that has a better CPU than the Series S for $300. Sure it would be nice to have a full gaming rig for your living room but do you really want to pay 5x the price for comparable performance? And as an added bonus it has native backwards compatibility to every generation of Xbox, which is currently a weak area in emulation.

I think I'll just buy the addon boards. They aren't adding much to the total cost.

My USB hub board worked out at about 10 bucks. You can get all the major stuff in a pack off aliexpress for like 50 bucks.

FWIW, the nvidia shield can pretty much do anything up to dreamcast in retroarch with 4k shaders turned on without breaking a sweat and it's a lot simpler to get RA going on that. Idk what the series s costs but I'd have to imagine the shield is cheaper? It's also a pretty good plex client and overall handy for any video/streaming stuff you'd wanna do on your tv. Ive been enjoying mine a surprising amount, it's ps1 performance is good enough that I actually just stopped bothering with trying to pirate ps1 stuff on my ps2 crt setup. Idk how good the series s is gonna be with ps2 emulation and overall I'm just not convinced with 6th gen emulation on any platform to have that be a dealbreaker, esp since a modded wii/ps2 is so easy and cheap to get. The shield pro also has the benefit of being tiny and aesthetic
