it was essentially the same thing, just with a wider body, stealth bomber design, and a card slot for those budget titles which would be made for those credit card sized game cards you could slot into the front . that slot on the front was also used to plug in the active shutter glasses required for some 3d titles. the first master system versions came with different on board games, depending on the serial number.

MODEL: 3010-A – Hang-On & Safari Hunt (gun game)
MODEL: 3010-B – Hang-On & Astro Warrior (I have found some B versions that only have Hang-On)

the master system 2 was just a cheaper version of the master system 1, since it lacked the built in game, and the card slot. it was the mega drive 2 of its time.

that is only correct in part. at the time between sega sg01 and master system, some games released which were able to run on both were considered "sega system" compatible, as in the sega line of products, and not for a system in particular. sega system just implies that this will run on sega consoles and not on nintendo systems.
