The map in vice city/vice city stories is tiny, claustrophobic, and just plain boring. If they could pull off the huge map in San Andreas, I don't see why they couldn't make vice city bigger.

1. It's big enough for the story, setting, and missions. Pretty much every area gets used once.

2. It is bigger than the III map. A lot of it ended up being wasted on beaches and water though.

3. SA's map seems a bit too big. In that you could easily have had 2 more campaigns with two new characters to use up all the space in it.

>> No.7266301

Vice City was made in a year and was originally intended as an expansion to III. They didn't have unlimited time and resources to make a huge map. Try and inform yourself next time you dumb fucking zoomie. Not really surprising though, people who get into GTA through San Andreas have always been dumb as rocks. Muh map size, muh jetpack.

'm just going by online maps I didn't make.

>5 feels smaller because 3/4 of the map is just mountains and fields with few settlements
>SA appears to actually have more cities if you combine all 3 vs. 5
>SA map is way more jam packed with locations and settings
>4 has a lot of roads making it feel bigger.

sa is not as big as it "feels", they just made it seem bigger with how they presented it, how they unlocked it bit by bit etc. vc is just a crime thriller set in a specific location whereas sa is trying to be a kind of wacky "road movie" for half of it where the protagonist is wandering in exile. when tenpenny takes you out of the city and dumps you in the middle of nowhere it instantly makes the world seem vast because of the feeling of displacement generated by the storytelling, even thought the actual physical distance is nothing special and you could just go back to grove street by grabbing a fast vehicle and holding the gas for a couple of minutes. so what you're reacting to here might not be the literal scale as much as the fact that the story is explicitly a journey and therefore emphasizes distance.

But that huge ass map and forced CJ travel across the state take away all the muh nigga atmosphere from the game. There are also a ton of useless mechanics like fighting styles, tuning or RPG system. It's better mechanically, but I do feel like the map is is a bit too big, or at least not utilized that well in many of the areas. Story starts to lose focus for quite a while after you leave Los Santos as well. Great radio though, but then again, Vice City has great radio as well.
I personally prefer III to both of them, but I like the gloomy atmosphere, and having the majority of the radio being originally produced tracks was awesome. Map was also very tightly designed and everything about it feels memorable.

>> No.7282281

>>7282242

The loss of focus is likely because the game had like 3 protagonists in the first draft of the game. It was not technologically feasable to switch to three characters. That's why like 2/3 of the story barely has anything to do with CJ and effectively just him going free agent mercenary.

All of those missions outside Los Santos would have been done by characters who stared in the other two cities. My guess on their identies:

>Asian guy affiliated with Chinese gangs in San Fierro
>Italian guy affiliated with Mafia in Los Venturas

>> No.7282292

>>7282281

My guess this is how the original story is structured:

>CJ starts in Los Santos
>gets kicked out and makes it to San Fierro
>meets protagonist #2
>CJ stops having missions but you can switch to him and run around
>New guy has a storyline in San Fierro and most of the same missions
>Chinese affilated guy who is into racing
>Through Woozie he goes to Los Venturas
>Meets Protagonist #3, Italian Mafia guy
>he works for Leone but decides to betray him
>they all plan a heist and CJ + Protagonist 2 + 3 take part
>Heist is a multi-character mission where you play a bit as CJ, then as the other two
>CJ has his ending storyline as he goes back to Los Santos

>> No.7282295

No not at all. Normies says SA was the best of them all. I will admit it obviously has the most content of them all and maybe be more fun to fuck around in; however, III and VC have exponentially more soul than SA ever did and I find myself coming back to them year after year.

GTA is about so much more than just story missions. Having a large and varied map is therefore a good thing even if they fail to utilise it all in missions.
SA's map opened up a whole new level of possibilities in the "dicking around" department, which was a major achievement at the time and well worth the price when it comes to loss of focus. Just the ability to seamlessly travel to different regions that were atmospherically distinct was an incredibly huge deal. I see no reason not to have a large map.
If some non-Rockstar dev made a sort of SA spiritual sequel, I personally think the cities in SA were just the right size, but I'd actually go even bigger with the countryside, and bump the max vehicle speed to keep travel times down.

My biggest problem with SA is how the atmosphere starts off so incredibly strong at the start, and then really drops off after Los Santos. Some aspects are still fairly good, but it does usually feel kinda detached and "mercenary-like".
I also wish they made more use of the map's scale in the missions. The ending shouldn't have been so focused on LS, the hunt for Tenpenny/Smoke should've been statewide.

>> No.7283242

>>7283060
>Having a large and varied map is therefore a good thing even if they fail to utilise it all in missions.
wrong. consistency and utilization are more important than shoving as many "themes" into a world as possible
the work saved on inflating the world size can be instead spent on detailing the smaller world, or make the smaller world more dynamic

>the ability to seamlessly travel to different regions that were atmospherically distinct was an incredibly huge deal
except in SA it's hardly seamless - for the most part: be in one environment, cross a bridge, be in another environment

Just on an OG Xbox. I bit the bullet last year on one and have no regrets. VC, SA and GTA3 look great running in 720 on my OLED.

A lot of games can be patched or are natively 720p/1080i anon.

I stand corrected. Holy shit, when I left the xbox-scene it was just a couple of games that sorta ran. But it seems like the scene did not sleep, although some games require the RAM upgrade.

That was a beautful game, just too vulgar and not clever enough. It was a mistake to have late 90's humour in an 80's game

Pretty much every game has a patch. Some don’t work well or at all but it’s very easy to implement. The ram upgrade is very wel worth it and is not hard. I have a halo and a crystal clear Xbox with the hyperkin hdmi cable both with the ram upgrade. It looks hella crisp and is really nice. Just make sure to see if you have a 1.5 or lower Xbox so you can clip the clock cap. Chip it with a flash Aladdin 4032+. Recap your PSU and motherboard for a nice clean signal. Slap in an SSD and enjoy. All in all it’s around $100 for the setup. Definitely my favorite retro console

>The loss of focus is likely because the game had like 3 protagonists in the first draft of the game. It was not technologically feasable to switch to three characters. That's why like 2/3 of the story barely has anything to do with CJ and effectively just him going free agent mercenary.
GTA5 had the same problem where michael's story is rushed, franklin's story feels unfinished and trevor's lacked any direction.

>All of those missions outside Los Santos would have been done by characters who stared in the other two cities.
woozie would've likely been PC #2 and my guess for PC #3 would've either been claude or caesar

Nice, I'm currently doing the opposite, I only have like 5 packages and 3 jumps to find. The packages from VC I believe were based on a Miami Vice episode or something where they were smuggling drugs through little tiki statutes.

That's every GTA game. Vulgar and nihilistic humor to cover for not saying anything interesting or engaging. It's like how the series has a running gag where talk shows are bloviating and obnoxious, so to make fun of that...they make them bloviating and obnoxious, which means I don't really want to listen to them because if they are plenty obnoxious enough in real life why would I want to recreate that in my video game experience?

The 6th gen was a period of rapid development and it should be understood that SA was 3 years after GTA III where they got a lot better at optimizing the PS2 hardware and making a more expansive game. Vice City is basically just GTA III plus.
