I have no idea how this was ever considered playable, much less good. It's absolutely god awful in every sense. It has absolutely zero redeemable qualities. It's worse than the average licensed shovelware.

There are some critically acclaimed retro games like Crash and Goldeneye that I shit on for being drastically worse than their contemporaries and undeserving of their acclaim. But I can at least understand how someone might have enjoyed those games had they not played Super Mario 64 or Quake first. But Metal Gear Solid not simply overrated or bad relative to it's contemporaries. It's legitimately a fucking horrible game and I have no idea how anyone ever enjoyed a second of it, even in 1998.

Only thing that really find annoying with the game (and MGS 2 and 3 as well) is the fixed camera angles, they fix that in MGS3 Subsistence and it is just so much fun and liberating to play.

I remember one of the game stores in the mall around here put the MGS intro up on a giant CRT in the front of the store. I was a PC gamer and pretty excited about Unreal and the Voodoo 2, but I admit I was a bit jealous with how much it resembled a big budget film.

The same store also put the MGS2 E3 demo up a few years later. That was seriously impressive.

The problem with MGS1's story is it's basically a rehash of MG2. And then to make matters worse, MGS2 is a rehash of MGS1, but only done on purpose like it's some meta commentary. Kojima has only told that one story over and over for the last 20 years.

Yeah honestly it’s pretty boring. I can see how it was appealing for the time, it’s very ambitious and I can appreciate it’s concepts and ideas. But the actual gameplay is mediocre and there’s too much downtime with the dialogue. You can have a great presentation but if the game itself features unintuitive mechanics and unengaging level design I can’t even force myself to care. Tryhard retro gaymers will shit on modern Naughty Dog and then praise this when they share the same problems. PSX era games just haven’t aged as well as Saturn or DOS stuff.
One day I’ll beat MGS. The franchise in general appeals to me and I am interested in exploring Kojima’s games. But that day is not today.

The stealth itself was never particularly enthralling but I think the pacing and mentality it brought with it is essential to the series' identity. fucking around with gaurds, finding weird gimmick mechanics hidden throughout the levels, each base having a sense of place that develops over the course of the games.
