I legitimately love Doom 3. The atmosphere at times almost feels like an actual horror game, despite really just being a game where you run around destroying demons. I finished it on veteran over the holidays and loved every second of it. Just finished the first boss on Nightmare, and I have to say, I still think this game is incredible despite the basically perma 25 hp handicap.
The atmosphere, the art style, and the way demons/Hell is portrayed is just incredible. My only real complaint is how awful the shotgun is.
Why does this game get so much hate?

>> No.7264939

Boring gameplay, boring level design, bad graphics, does it even have music (I don't even remember if it does).

>Why does this game get so much hate?
It was completely different from all previous Doom games, had a bigger narrative than "shotgun go boom", and no sticky tape on Mars.

I agree with your assessment. A great game even to this day but I do understand why some may roast it.

If it were a fine game, people would like it. It isn't. The rather mediocre Halflife 2 buried this game and the only reason it even gets discussed at all today is because it is called Doom.

Yes, I can see how little it has to do with the original Doom's gameplay, but it was a great FPS nonetheless. Surprisingly enough it had a great story too, all things considered. I always find funny how much they shilled the tape recording as this groundbreaking narrative method in BioShock when even Doom fucking 3 was already doing it.

Vanilla Doom 3 is the best Doom, definitely. Classic Doom is good, especially Ultimate Doom, but Doom 3 is better.

Nu-Doom however is pissfilter garbage, awful games.

The graphics were really good when it first came out. I remember getting it a couple years after it came out, and even then I was impressed. Yeah, they're really rough now, especially the shadows, but it's really not a bad looking game.

Both games took it from System Shock, with Bioshock's dev having made SS2 previously. He never hid this fact.

I agree with you OP. I'm playing through on the Switch right now and it's far better than I remember. There's definitely a lot of bullshit to it as well but I'm genuinely having a cracking time. It's also a bit of a "WOW FUTURE!" moment playing it in handheld mode.

Bad graphics? Back in the day, they were so impressive, so far ahead from anything out at the time, that many didn't believe they were real. Id was accused of using prerendered footage on the game's trailers. Save from character models, that did age badly, the textures and lighting still look impressive today.

I feel like Doom 3 was one of the hallmarks of a phenomenon that I like to call "living room games". The best way to define a "living room game" is to first define a "bedroom game", the kind of game you don't want people to see you playing, due to how childish and embarrassing they are. For more specific examples, Jak and Daxter is a bedroom game, Uncharted is a living room game.

Doom 3 failed to live up to enormous expectations, and for good reason.
It was a complete departure in terms of gameplay.
Instead of fast-paced action, we got a shitty imitation of System Shock.
Also, the whole "enemy spawns behind you every 30 seconds" got tired very quickly.

People who say it was nothing like Doom 1 or 2 are retards, it was a LOT like the previous games before the zoomers and tumor-boomers began popularizing Doom as some "ULTRA FAST 150 MPH KILLFEST" when it was originally locked at 30 FPS and played by the overwhelming majority of players with keyboard controls only, while mouse was optional, and was considered to be a lot slower paced and horror driven than many other games of the time, in fact if not one of the scariest games ever released up to that point.

People who point to the multiplayer community are missing the point since DOOM sold on its singleplayer. Saying it was meant to be ultra-fast are the same stupid faggots that thought bunnyhopping was intended in Quake 1.
