Is the original Xbox a waste of money? Why would anyone buy this when they can afford a PS2?

No. The Xbox is way better than the PS2 because...

1) custom soundtracks
2) an internal hard drive
3) connects to the internet without an add-on
4) better graphics
5) it looks better than the PS2
6) better versions of multiplat titles
7) better video output

PC is even better, and shares almost all of the Xbox game library.

>better video output
That's a lie, a flaw of the Xbox was it's poor video quality, which negated the better graphics it's extra power over the PS2 provided

Xbox is basically the other Dreamcast. You see zero value from it, unless you know you already love what it offers. However it does not have Dreamcast's street cred so you aren't inclined to suck Sega's dick to look like you have good taste on the internet. No hate on the Dreamcast though. I would like an Xbox but I'm getting by with Xbox 360 BC.

Actually...

>Better Graphics
Could mean just that, better graphics.

>It looks better than the PS2
He's talking about the look of the Xbox and PS2 consoles. I have to agree. The big X and the green circle with the Xbox logo looks awesome.

>Better versions of multiplat titles
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the ones that include custom soundtracks, which the PS2 lacked.

>better video output
He's right. The AV port on the back of the Xbox is digital, which works great with an HDMI converter. The PS2 AV port is flawed and looks terrible when using an HDMI converter cable. A similar thing happened with the N64 HDMI converter.

Had by a landslide the best online support of any console that generation, and the best online support any console aside from MAYBE the Dreamcast had yet seen period.
Had modern features like custom soundtracks and a built in hard drive.
Was easily the most powerful, giving it the best versions of multiplats.
Had some really great exclusive games. A slew of cancelled Dreamcast games went to Xbox exclusively. You had hidden gems like Otogi 1 and 2 and Phantom Dust. Ninja Gaiden fucking Black. and up until the very recent GOG rerelease Kingdom Under Fire as well.

OG Xbox was literally Dreamcast 2. Every Sega exclusive title went to this, except for Sonic Team games that went to Gamecube and VF4 for the PS2.

Shit now I want to re play Crazy Taxi 3. I remember I had to draw maps for that to figure out the last level on the Crazy X (you have to visit every single point of the city, but in whatever order you want).

It was without any doubt at all a superior system to the PS2 and gamecube. Microsoft lost hundreds and hundreds of dollars selling them because the cost of production was significantly higher than the retail price. Even as the years went one, the cost barely got any lower, all those parts were still just as expensive.

It was the better system of the 3, no doubt but there was just no surmounting the ridiculously generous 3rd party support the PS2 had.

>Crazy taxi 3 was based? It's the only one I never played.

It had Brian Setzer rockabilly/psychobilly music, a Las Vegas city that swam in neon light effects (and on the desert area you could climb a mountain or jump off a dam), and one of the new cabbies was a groovy big black momma.
I hadn't played the second game so I can't tell you how many of the improvements came from that or were added in CT3, but in CT3 the car was more wobbly, had extreme smoke effects and burning tires when you did a dash, and you had a separate button for doing jumps, KITT style. It had multiple passangers but I know that was in CT2.
If you finished the Crazy X you could unlock all cabbies/cars and cities from the entire trilogy. The West Coast from the first game was hugely expanded, almost twice as big as in CT1.

It was pretty based and with all the unlockables it was the definitive version of the entire trilogy, unless you enjoyed the simpler aesthetics of the first game (the smoke effects were a bit overdone, but you gotta show off those Xbox graphics).
Only downside beyond the extreme aesthetics is that ultimately it is just more of the exact same shit as the previous games.

Nearly all multiplats were best on the Xbox. Gaming PCs existed of course, but ports were often spotty at that time.
