No thread for the best 4th gen console? Let's fix that.

What are you playing? What do you want to play?

>> No.7263008

just finished Sonic 1 again, tried some hacks but except the Next Level, couldn't find great ones. I'm currently playing Puyo Puyo and might play Ristar again cause I haven't finished it before

Trying to play Truxton but I suck ass. Just got to keep grinding. I got an EverDrive recently so I'm trying out stuff I never had as a kid, any recs are welcome. Any genre is fine.

Try Ranger X. It flew under my radar as a kid but after playing a few years back I was surprised it wasn't praised more. Takes a minute to get the hang of playing tho. Using a 6 button controller is mandatory fyi.

Great game. Definitely go back and finish it. The last boss is tough but quite fun.

Was playing Phantasy Star 2 up until recently(my copy of Paprium showed up). Not a huge rpg guy but it's alright. Love the look of the game but I really just want to get thru it so I can move onto PS4. Outside of the first couple dungeons I have been using a guide tho and I do not feel bad at all about doing it at all.

Is the model 1 MD the sexiest console ever made? If not it has to be top 3.

>>7264729
it's definitely up there, especially when you have the full "Tower of Power" effect going by having it hooked up to a Sega CD(either model) and a 32X(or a Power Base Converter)

indeed I'd say the modularity and varied add-ons and accessories for the Genesis/Mega Drive is probably a huge factor in my interest in the system

>using a guide
Honestly I don't blame you. Not using a guide made me extremely overleveled from having to exit the Green Dam after running out of healing items multiple times. I don't even want to know just how many hours I spent in that place. I didn't have to grind any money or levels at all for the rest of the game after the Green Dam.

Maybe if I had unlimited free time I would try without a guide but these dungeons can be crazy and the monster encounter rate is high. Without last guide I would be pretty lost as well with what to do. I'm alright with a game not holding my hand but the hints this game gives are not enough.

Having had one I have to agree. Playing Virtua Fighter on your genesis is cool as shit, but other than that it's kind of just a huge pain in the ass. Great port of space harrier though, not that that too wasn't outclassed by the Saturn port and subsequent other modern ports.

I think what most people get wrong about Comix Zone is going at it like it's straight up jab 'n' jog. Mindlessly beating up guys might get you past he first chapter but 2nd chapter on and you will get your shit pushed in. The game rewards you for playing smart and punishes you for playing dumb. Hence why it filters so many.

Did sega have a single competitive add that wasn't bullshit?

I think sega died for being the pepsi of video games for too long. They built their whole identity around being better than nintendo, and they never focused on their own product culture in that era in my memory. I wouldn't even know what their commercials would be like if Nintendo disappeared.

I feel like things were best when the dreamcast was the first to market, but they were too weak financially to take what was about to happen. Also I think years of training runts to piss on nintendo kids at the playground had something to do with it. Nintendo 64 -> Dreamcast wasn't a tempting offer because of the tribalism they cultivated.

What's funny is that remained true even after the shit SNES released, as the anemic SNES CPU, which only runs at 1/3rd the speed of all it's competitors, only used an 8-bit data bus as compared to the Mega Drive's 16-bit data bus.

On paper the PCE looks evenly matched to the Genesis and Amiga. But it does still use an 8bit 6502 CPU with a custom 7.6MHz CPU. The SNES uses a 16bit version of the 6502. The Genesis and Amiga both use Motorola 68000 CPU, and are very similar. 68000 was a really popular 16bit CPU, as it was used in many arcade boards, the Neo-Geo has a faster 68000, many of Sega's own 16bit arcade boards use it, the Jaguar has a 68000, the Saturn uses this chip for audio.

>>7274524
The PC Engine's 8-bit CPU does put it at a disadvantage when compared to the 16-bit CPU in the Mega Drive and Amiga, however, the SNES, despite having a 16-bit CPU, still only opted to use an 8-bit data bus, thus matching the PC Engine in that regard. So yes, the PC Engine really is 3 times faster, despite being many years older. This is why pic related runs far smoother, with far more action, than the SNES iteration. There were other advantages the PC Engine offered over the crippled and bottlenecked SNES as well, such as more total colours on screen, and a higher possible resolution without colour depth being reduced.
