It's always been a shoddy collection of work-arounds and speedhacks held together by sheer will and by a few nice plugins for people who like things shiny. Now hardware has moved forward in leaps and bounds that approach is totally unecessary.

Get the Mednafen core for RetroArch and never look back.

I just call it the fucking PlayStation or PS. PSone if I'm referring to the shitty thin model. PSX was an internal name, X meaning experimental, that did actually appear in early promotional materials. It caught on with some people. It didn't just magically happen on the Internet like some faggots said, it was due to magazines. But calling it the PSX now is like calling the N64 the Ultra 64. Everyone will know what you mean, but you look like a tool doing it.

I agree that when I occasionally listened to CDs on my old PSX they certainly sounded clean, specifically the midrange, but to say its somehow a godsend is entirely fucking subjective. the thing is the chip from the 100x models is pretty good and then if you pair it with quality speakers and a quality amp it sounds damn good. Everyone thinks its just the PS but its not you have to have a nice amp and a nice set of speakers but it truly does sound amazing when you set one up. Also you don't need to mod it but if you switch out the capacitors and resistors then it sounds even better but it loses some of the unique sound. The chip provides great sound stage and great mids while everything else is still pretty good too.
