They were sold on comiket and not big stored with marketing, they became popular naturally by word of mouth and that's when big publishers would notice them and make all of those ports with new art by professional artists (or the artist getting better with years like When They Cry).

Always hated this kind of style. One thing about anime that baffles me is how it still looks pretty shit. I think it just needs a little more realism. Smaller eyes, noses, non-triangle chins. Still enjoy the shit out of it.
