What's the best PlayStation 2 to buy in 2021?
Does your model still work?

People say the slim PS2 is the way to go, but my fat, original model PS2 from 2004 still works perfectly, and I've heard the slim models are less durable.

The Ace Combat trilogy and Tales of Legendia all run like shit on my PC.

My original fat takes for ever to launch a disc, whereas my TEST PS2 has no issues.

I know someone who owns that very same PS2. The pink one with the case and all. Got it for a good price because it was pink.

I wonder if you're that dude.

Fat with a softmod

>> No.7253239

first release slims are perfect miniaturized ps2s and can run burned games with the dvd drive exploit. you can also use the slim's dvd exploit to make a free mcboot memory card so you can mod any system. both models can load games through network, but phats are better if you want to load games specifically from the hdd since the slims don't have two hookup

Both my FAT and Slim models work fine, only issie is that the FAT one has a dead clock battery.
Was also planning on using an old SATA drive of mine on the FAT, but somehow doesn't work anymore out of the blue, which is a shame since it was 640 GB.

pcmcia jap model is not worth even considering
30k is unreliable
39k has the best compatibility
50k is just a slightly shittier fat
70k is good for a slim
77k has shitty laser
90k is slim with integrated power but some specific stuff, especially some PS1 games won't work but also a couple PS2 games
PS3 with PS2 is probably yellow lighted by now
TL;DR either 39k if chubby is ok or 70k if you want slim

I have an early FAT forget exact version.
The laser/DVD for watching movies crapped out very early (like back when DVD rental of games wasn't just a thing but common) but could still play almost all games without issue. (God of War 1 for some reason crapped out on it in the first cutscene)
Replacing the laser isn't a big job and only costs about $10 from China nowadays.

I have a 70000 I think, been a while since I checked the model number. It's working fine via freemcboot. Still boots psx disks fine too.

Have 2 PHATs, both don't seem to boot the system. Gave up and emulate on a PS3, but it's a shame not all games work properly. I would pick up a free PHAT PS2, but it's outside my county and muh tier 4 lockdown is a thing here. If they still have it when this ends, I'll pick it up, since they're not giving it to resellers.

Weird I usually hear the fat ps2 die faster than the slim.

>> No.7256478

>>7256340
I think it depends on the country. Slims die faster in hot countries due to overheat because it has a tiny fan. A friend of mine would be sweating during summer because the fan was pointed at his slim, otherwise it would shut down. Meanwhile, my phat was fine.

They do. My first fat was already experiencing major laser read issues by the time San Andreas came out, as was everyone else's that I knew. Meanwhile, my silver slim has worked perfectly fine since 2006.

>> No.7256708

If you buy either today a fat is probably gonna die quicker because disc drives don't last forever, and fat ps2s were both the console and dvd player for a lot of households for a decade. Slims came out alongside 7th generation, by comparison.

What is the difference between a 39001 and a 39001-N? I have the -N but my brother has a normal 39 and we can't figure out the difference

One of the fats after Sony worked out the launch window quality control bugs. There's nothing like having a hundred games tucked away on an old HDD and a $20 Chinesium SATA network adapter.

If it didn't have the timebombed encrypted HDD, the PSX would be a solid contender.

>Does your model still work?
Yep. It's a 90001 slim model I got for Christmas in 2009. Still works perfectly, despite how much I've played on it in these 11 years I've had it.
