There's a lot of Koji Kondo music from this golden period that fits but this is the true masterpiece. Nothing in the song sounds stereotypically "scary" (no harsh noise, no detuned strings, no John Carpenter synth or piano) and the song is more focused on being surreal yet it's completely abjectly terrifying in every possible way while still evoking an air of serenity. It perfectly complements the level it's in too, the Forest Temple honestly feels like all of reality in the game is breaking down and you're losing your mind.
