That's what I'm doing in my game. Being in development on and off since 2018 because it's a more of a hobby. Took me over a year alone to get the procedural generation(including an "asset mutator" for more variety) and the hierarchical animation system(based on sprites) working. All I'm doing for the next months now is churning out assets(speak: map blocks, textures and sprites, music) for the different thematic settings: medieval/Gothic, desert/Egyptian, Greco-Roman, jungle/Mesoamerica, icey wastes/Scandinavian - dropped due to already stressing workload: an oriental setting, a post-nuclear wasteland and an organic alien world.
For each world the system generates a central hub-type map with a town-like safe zone and several sub maps including varying objectives. The goal of each world is the defeat of a boss creature. Originally worlds could be tackled in any order, but I changed this back to a more linear progression since it messed with the difficulty curve.

I figured the best way to test the collision on this floor would be to throw a whole bunch of casings and particles on it and see if they stay or disappear. Seems they stay, but I'll have to actually test the thing with PrBoom+ before I'm certain.

1) You're a pussy for quitting instead of pistol-starting that level you're stuck on. You can easily recover since you're playing with saves; every map is designed to be played from pistol starts, so go find that shotgun and play.
2) This is why you keep two saves, so you can go back if you accidentally saved before death
3) Practice pistol-starts no-saves on Hurt Me Plenty or lower to improve your skill
4) Play some early limit-removing or vanilla megawads before you play something like Valiant, as playing something incredibly good can change your perceptions so much that you can no longer enjoy old megawads because of their design flaws (like hidden starting weapons/ammo a la Downtown/Chasm, or tight corridors that aren't conducive to movement and which cuase the blockmap bug like a motherfucker) which don't become readily apparent until you play a megawad like Valiant. Scythe should be your first custom megawad. It actually lacks the design flaws I was talking about previously, for the record. It was my favorite megawad until I finished Valiant.

Duke 3D was basically a less visually interesting DOOM with verticality and some cheesy dialogue. were it not for the protagonist and the emerging popularity of shooters in the 90s, nobody would have given a fuck about Duke 3D. Duke Nukem Forever, on the other hand, is actually very unique. The level where you get shrunk and explore a kitchen is very cool, for one. Slapping alien wall titties is more fun than shooting women trapped in alien goo. The weapons feel better and, even if the controls are seemingly derivative of CoD, there is actually much more strategy to be employed than in D3D. I'll admit there's no mod scene, multiplayer is a joke, etc., it doesnt have the longevity of D3D but as a standalone singleplayer experience, I legitimately think DNF is the better game and it got a ridiculously raw deal in the reviews.

This is true in my experience too, 3D Realms based stuff was more popular probably mostly because Quake looked rough AF at the resolution most where playing and few had the system to run it good since 3D accelerators weren't a common thing, so Quake looked and played shit while Duke, Blood etc still offered more detail and expression with their sprites and ran great.

Full on 3D engine games REALLY took off with Half Life though!

The lack of a railgun in Quake 1 does hurt a bit. Also Quake 2 has the most satisfying chaingun ever. Starts out very weak, but then when it really gets spinning it absolutely murders anything and everything almost instantly, it eats up ammo like crazy because that's the only way to keep it anywhere near remotely balanced. Some people may stick with bigger weapons like rocket launchers for the bosses but I just whip out the fucking chaingun.

I love how in Unreal, the detail textures blend in new layers when you get closer so it never gets blurry.
And detail texture is not just noise, it is different depending on material, one each for stone, granite, steel, glass, marble, wood (looks like fiber, really cool) and so on.

It's a matter of remapping colors further out of the range of your palette.
If the remapping algorithm, whatever it is, is weighted to select value over hue, then it it might end up with something like that.

You should probably ask someone who knows, though. That's just something I extrapolated from lower the color depth on images over the years.

Textures in most games were 16bit and compressed for performance and storage reasons (when Unreal came out I still had 2.5 GB hard drive, and the game occupied ~0.5)
It isn't noticable without filtering since no new colors is introduced there, but after '98 most games started to use texture filter.

The trilinear/bilinear filtering tries to introduce a color transition (gradient) between adjascent texels when you get close, but since texture format doesen't allow for that many colors, and the game does not use dithering as dynamic dither would require more processing power, you see these kind of "bands" of colors isntead.

To be honest you're never supposed to be that close to the surface to see that - the second row of the images is the closes you can get without cheats. I used Ghost cheat to get that close to show the way Detail texture continue to be layered-in and try to make textures to look nicer even beyond reasonable expectations. It succeeds very well in my opinion, and definitely looks better than what we have in 2000-2010 games.
Even modern games often present blurry textures when you get up close.
