7245616 No.7245616 [Reply] [Original]

The 1.0 version of the English translation patch for the Sega Saturn version of Symphony of the Night has released. There is a link to it here:

https://segaxtreme.net/threads/sega-saturn-26th-anniversary-game-competition.24626/

I'm currently playing it now, I haven't gotten very far in, but so far everything it working fine. I've played the shit out of this game on the PS1 and PSP, so it'll be nice to finally be able to check out the Saturn exclusive areas/items without having to fumble through menus and items lists in moon language.

Has anyone else fired it up yet?

The fact is the Saturn port is inferior in every single way to the PSX version. Sure the game is still *playable*, but so much has been lost in the transition that it's not even worth it anymore. SOTN on Saturn is dingy and sluggish, and doesn't have enough new content to justify sacrificing the visual splendor of the original.

This was a port of mercy for Japs without a PSX, and nothing more.

What? Don't try to spin this as console fanboyism on my part. As a matter of fact the only thing that could possibly motivate anyone to play this garbage port longer than 10 minutes IS console fanboyism, for the Saturn. Anon, every. single. special effect has been scaled down on the Saturn version of the game. Literally every single one. It has egregious slowdown, longer load times, MORE load times, a load time to access the fucking map, and the graphics are mangled to fit the Saturn's 320x240 resolution. There is no universe you could ever spin the Saturn version as being adequate, let alone superior to the PSX version.

The sprite work is especially bad for many of the enemies. Ohers look okay but tonally are too cartoony and dont' fit in.

Then there's a lot of cool features and items that help the game a lot. There's a "third hand" for equippable items so you no longer have to unequip something to use a potion. Then you have sprint shoes to run faster. These are major "quality of life" improvements to the game. Then you have some sorta okay weapons and armors.

Or the other way around, given the trapdoor object only opens up after being hit from below on PS1. Actually it makes a ton of sense this way. Look at the pic carefully: the Saturn version made the path longer so it wouldn't overlap into a new area. For PS1, it was probably supposed to be a tunnel leading to that square of the caverns that it's aligned with, but the developers probably thought it would be more prudent to move the exit further into the castle entrance, or they didn't think the design was interesting enough.

And so the glitched save room was a hastily-replaced loading room. What sucks is this isn't even a bad boxart. It's just stacked up against the artwork of a legend which just kills it. It should've been the inlay or something

That's if the trapdoor and Merman room passages existed simultanfously, and the latter didn't just replace the former.

Yeah, the alternative is they switched the exit to the merman room specifically to tease the life up item and silently teach the player that blocked passages can be opened up later on and items will sometimes be out of reach. Much more effective teaching tool than a non-descript closed hatch that's easy to miss right when you first gain control.

I think it's rapid modernization. These people's parents were peasants a generation ago and the Chinese people have went through extreme hardships for the last century. They still haven't transitioned into a let your guard down co-operative mindset that a lot of middle class people in developed nations have.

Some good news, is that since 2000 there's been a lot of Chinese forums scanning Chinese and Japanese magazines. All the mags are on their own sites nad their own forums and you can't even see the links unless you join. Fairly standard for closed world Chinese forums. Now one of them has decided to put his entire scanning collection on archive for everyone to enjoy. It's a fantastic first step and I hope others follow.

So was this ever eluded to in the games or did the Castlevania anime make Alucard a fag for no reason? Shit was weird

this doesnt surpise me. Same with Kojima and other jerks. Theres literally nothing in this world that can be created by yourself, everyone steals everyone's idea.
I get reminded of this comic "I made this. I made this!"

The show is written by some edgy fedora tipping comic book author who has never played the games and just read a summary of the plot. Comic authors are extreme hacks and they should have hired at least a real young adult author.

Maybe in like 2008. It hasn't been anything close to 60 bucks for over a decade, even in Akiba

There are actually a ton of great comic writers. The ones who become famous outside comics though are either Alan Moore or Alan Moore wannabes.
