I'm wrong and nobody should agree with me, but i think it's Metroid. I see it as this game that's really ahead of it's time, a 16bit game in 8bits. It has depth that shouldn't exist in the NES. The lack of a map is a big flaw, but i accept it. It's kinda part of what i like about it. It blows my mind that is possible for you to get lost on a 8bit game.

SMB3 is probably the objective answer. I also quite enjoy Gargoyle's Quest 2.

No map is actually fine, the problem was either starting with only 35 energy and/or having no way to get to full health without grinding. Starting with 35 health in kraid or ridley is fucking stupid and you have no choice but to go back. Even with 99 health the game would be vastly less bullshit and trying to explore without max health would be a choice. But with less down time, I think getting lost in the map wouldn't be such a big deal.

Forgot to add, you could slap a health recharger somewhere in the game and your punishment for dying is walking to it instead of farming, but I think the best solution would be to make enemies drop more health, but be unfarmable (no infinite spawns with infinite drops). I always thought metroid was interesting for having additive health instead of subtractive health. You start low and build it up instead of starting from the top and being whittled down. That way if you played well in the beginning of a life, you had more health for when rooms get hard. But the way metroid is now you just kind of break even and die unless you hit an energy tank.

Honerable mention goes to zeldas, battletoads, Castlevanias, other marios, kirby, megaman 2.

Puzzle: Dr Mario.
Racing: RC Pro Am
Shmup: Gradius
RPG: Mother? Final Fantasies?

Light gun? DUCK HUNT

Black box best game is SMB1.

I personally like Kid Icarus a lot. But it has flaws the others listed don’t.

In the first one Batman's agile and excellently animated, with a perfectly sized sprite that allows for lots of space to see the stages and maneuver through them.
