>> No.7240389

Yeah it has awesome shooting action and the graphics and the musics is good

>> No.7240542

All versions of Doom are fucking garbage. Goldeneye is much better.

>> No.7240549

This is the only good FPS on N64 but still better on PC

>> No.7240561

It's literally the best one.

It feels like going back to an ambitious 90s megawad. Mapping quality definitely feels very unpolished by today's standards, and imho it isn't as memorable as Plutonia and TNT. It's neat from a historical perspective but there's much better DOOM out there

>> No.7240582

I bought it on steam for 1.something, hope it's fun

There was a re-release for modern systems last year (or was it this year?). I just finished playing it, so my opinions are:
- the game is roughly divided into two parts: Earth (8 stages) and Hell (16 or so stages)
- the Earth stages are rather big
- the Hell stages are usually a big arena with a few side rooms
- there are at least two "puzzles" that may confuse you. The first one is in level 8, where you need to activate a background object (that does not respond) to lower a key. There was another one ahead, but I forgot. Either way, expect tedious key-hunting.
- tons of Hell Knights
- guns feel good, like Final/Ultimate Doom
- there's some platforming
- later stages have unescapable traps
- difficulty changes placement of keys - in higher difficulties, some keys are only found inside secret rooms
- final boss is laughable
- fuck lost souls
- there are no chaingunners

Ah, I remembered. The second puzzle is on Stage 15. You'll see a supercharge sphere (blue one) move between 5 pedestals, then you have to choose the correct one. Seems simple enough, right? Pay attention and see where it appeared last. Well, no. You actually have to choose the pedestal where the sphere appeared FIRST.

It's an N64 game that doesn't have Zelda in the name, so no.

Good assessment. Did you do those crazy levels you unlock in the beginning by shooting the barrels?

>> No.7240735

Its enjoyable but slow. The best part about DOOM is the high speed. DOOM 64 brings speed down to a crawl, both in terms of movement, and shotgunning barons to death. It also suffers from being a product by Midway, in that it contains arcadey "fuck you" moments. Floors that fall into lava that you won't know about until you've died to it. Cryptic secrets. Things like that.
But if you want more DOOM, you'll probably find it mostly enjoyable.

Yes, but not on the N64.

Yes.

>> No.7240749

It's sort of a fun and novel "Doom 1.5" in that its missing Archie, Chainey, etc. Great atmosphere, but it's slow... in a bad way. In retrospect it's kinda missing some boom bang oomph.
As I said in previous threads, it's a major tragedy that it didn't take advantage of the N64's multiplayer capability.

might be just me sucking but I find the final boss a little frustrating without the lazer thingy

even having played the hell out of this when it was new, I completely forgot all the secret level entrances when I played thru the re-release and had to do it with the BFG

Doom 64 is the true Doom 3. Even according to id themselves, the canon timeline is now Doom, Doom II, Doom 64, Doom 4 and Doom Eternal. The actual Doom 3 is considered a seperate reboot continuity

Final Doom is canon in that "All wads are canon" because of alternate universes/dimensions or whatever the fuck but Plutonia and TNT are not part of the canon timeline proper

>> No.7241259

It's great. Takes the typical Doom gameplay and ups the thickness of the atmosphere making it feel more oppressive. Don't play the original version though, use Doom 64 EX which pretty much just turns it into a WAD.
