Playthrough video of map11 of 2048 units of /vr/ is up. I had to learn how to SR50 just to max this level, because I couldn't figure out how to grab the soul sphere secret properly. Or is SR50 the proper way? The final fight isn't actually difficult if you find the plasma rifle secret, but otherwise it requires a great deal of planning.

It's more dev purgatory. I foolishly made this update fucking huge because I went back and overhauled the default set because it sucked. Same thing with the crate weapons. The pocket boner overhaul was a pain in the ass but I think it's done now.
Now all I gotta do is refine the Blastmaster set, brightmaps for some idle frames, and tweak the monsters. GMOTA had a massive update that took me nearly a year to do, and now it's Combined_Arms turn. I really need to stop doing this shit to myself, I have a problem.

I've been playing Doom 64 lately, and I'm near the end. For whoever played it. Did you guys feel that the Earth levels (1~8) were given much more consideration than the rest? I was getting annoyed at the key hunting on stages 7 and 8, but once the Hell levels started, I guess they just gave up. Most of the stages are just a circular/square arena with a few side rooms.
I dunno, does anyone else feel like the "first stage syndrome" is real with this game? Like they showed everything the game is capable of right in the first "chapter", and gave up on the rest?

Also, there aren't chaingunners, but why the hell are there 8 or more Hell Knights every stage? It gets old fast. Anyway, it's a pretty good game, I liked it way more than 3.

Q2 Movement is better than Q1, and the "modern" one that is default on many source ports is taken from QuakeWorld and Q2 code, vanilla is slower and it limitates you to 350 units.
And the only issue with Q2 guns is the animation Delay, which makes you think twice, which is good in DM.

Thats true, but the problem is that theres no option besides them. In Doom Builder and Trenchbroom, you can learn the hotkeys, but there also GUI-driven ways to accomplish tasks. So the learning curve isnt as high.
Also the hotkeys in mapster are often unintuitive, physically difficult to press, and not rebindable.

Definitely if you like old school wads like Memento Mori series. It's not as bad, as the people tend to say. Maps have good old school style gameplay without frustrating or badly designed moments. There are also some visually pretty memorable levels like Black Tower and Mephisto's Mausoleum. Former having actual huge tower in it, and latter being resting place for half-dead Icon Of Sin. I've always preferred them over the original Half-Life models, just aesthetically, not just because of the higher definition. Definition isn't even that big a deal to me, Quake has rough models, but it's also a much more abstract game in visual design, it doesn't put much emphasis on realistic details, which Half-Life does, yet it still looks fine. I also like some of the new sounds a lot better, I never liked the sound of the original MP5, for instance.

Also, a lot of my game/mod tinkering goes back to me just swapping out weapon models and sound effects for Half-Life, Opposing Force, Counter-Strike, and Sven-Coop, back when I was a teen, finding one I think is cool, trying it out, and seeing if the animations are satisfying or not (some could have a nice looking model, but really stiff and bad animations), and then trying out sound effects, trying to find something which I think is fitting, or sometimes mixing my own from other sounds.
I owe a lot of my Doom tinkering and modding to doing stuff like that with Half-Life, which is why I have a lot of attachment to Half-Life's high definition pack and replacement models/assets in general.

Always hated the Duke Nukem 3D high definition/3D model pack though, always thought it looked like garbage even as a kid.

I thought map09 was amazing. The baron portion reminded me of the baron portion in the "L" shape in god machine (sunlust map 30), I sort of naturally remembered to stay to one side to be able to get passed them. Due to the god machine experience, I didn't die in that part, most of my deaths were in the first area with the pile of arch viles; somehow those revenants can really trip me up. somehow the arch vile stress makes me worse at revenant dodging?

map09 seems to have a bug though, I couldn't get 3 arachnotrons to spawn in? I was a bit sad as I was going for uv max.

brilliant map and overall wad though.

In terms of difficulty, map09 was quite a bit less difficult than "black crest" in 2048 units of /vr/, IMO.

Hey! I have a problem. I'm trying to play the "High Noon Drifter" mod with "Sunlust" map-pack but for some reason I can't jump. I've tried High Noon Drifter on its own and then I can jump when I've tried Sunlust on its own I still can't jump.

Sunlust probably has it defined in its MAPINFO lump to not allow jumping. You could straight up just open the .wad in Slade and erase or comment that line out.

I agree that it's annoying, but I kinda understand where mappers are coming from. Theres plenty of casual GZDoom users who aren't even aware of the fact that vanilla and boom maps don't intend for jumps. Using mapinfo to disable it is just a much easier solution than painstakingly playtesting for any moment where jumping might break things, especially in a map that wasnt even specifically designed for GZDoom in the first place.

They're completely different games. the 3DO version is very much a Wolfenstein 3D clone, nearly no verticality, all the levels are mazes (thankfully it has a very nice map, easy to find your way through the levels thanks to it). A lot of the enemy sprites are actually Mortal Kombat style digitized pictures in a fairly high res ! The pc version has a more advanced engine with more verticality. I feel it's been really rushed out because the outside sections of the island are detailed and full of nooks and crannies and very open, while the inside of the mansion is empty rooms and labyrinths.
The gameplay in both version is very exploration focused. So if you like running around looking for secrets and shit, it's tons of fun. Most of the detours are actually pretty rewarding.
