It only gets really hard on the last 10 or so stages, and not all of them are hard, just 2 or 3 of them. It's just a combination of:
- clunky controls and interface
- escort missions
- enemies spawn in your way

What happens is that, near the end, the game will throw 8~10 enemies at once in your way (multiple times in a stage), and none of your weapons are that good for taking down multiple enemies. You also have some stages where enemies start with tech you don't have (rocket launchers, plasma guns), and they can devastate your ass in a few shots. So you have to start doing stuff like running like a bitch and taking potshots at a conga line of 15 guys.

>> No.7235786

>>7235775
Also, the game stresses that money is important, but that's only in the very early game (5 or 6 beginning stages). After the 10th stage, you'll be swimming in so much money that you won't have anything to do with it.

The GOG version comes with DOSBOX. Aside from the title screen running at 50 times the normal speed, the rest of the game plays well.

The problem with the controls is that, because the game now is in full 3D, sometimes it's difficult to see who's shooting at you (because buildings are in the way). There's a button to hide them (B), but it's just one of the many problems. I think the main problem is that you don't really have any means to fight multiple opponents before you research a nuclear grenade, which is after the first half of the game. Another problem is actually firing on moving opponents. Later on, you'll start to fight guys who go turbo skating at high speeds, and using the right mouse button to fire at them is rather clunky. If you click even one pixel outside of the enemy box, you'll fire and waste your shots. This can be rather bad during the late game, because your most powerful weapon, a rifle, takes 3 or 4 seconds to reload. Now imagine you just missed four shots at once (usually you're controlling all 4 guys at once), because you misclicked. Many mission failures will follow.

Syndicate Wars can be a real bitch in later missions because the game really isn't finished, EA booted it out the door way before Bullfrog could finish it, there was supposed to be a third playable faction but that never got worked out.
In one of the last levels there's a really insidious glitch which fills your inventory with invisible items you can't drop, which is pretty fucking grand because at the start of the mission you need to pick up an explosive charge before it detonates or you die. I'm not sure if it was in all versions or if it was patched.
The GOG release also lacks most of the language options from the original release, which matters little to some, but more to me.

It's overall a very playable game, mostly pretty good and it's one of my favorites, but it's also got some jank to it, and the jank starts piling up by the end.

Not sure I agree on all those points. You don't need Nuclear Grenades to fight groups of enemies, it'll be damn handy later on facing groups of strong guys (mind you'll want upgraded arms to use them, otherwise you'll throw them sphincter-clenchingly short ranges), but Miniguns alone let you deal with groups a lot early on. You can also set your agents/zealots to shoot enemies on sight, which can help with dealing with harder to target guys, but even if you're aiming manually, you can still lead your shots with fast targets.
For visibility, you can use infravision to see hidden enemies.

There's also quite a lot of utility in Razor Wire (which you can snatch in the first Eurocorp mission) and much later in the game, Bomb Wire.

About the glitch, I found that if you put at least 1 High Explosive into your inventory (of all agents), then they won't have any problems grabbing the bombs. You can also kill the guy going around in the yellow taxi, but you need to be quick or he'll destroy the station without even arming the bomb (after the taxi explodes, he'll stay face-down on the floor for a few seconds).

>>7237723
I'm talking more about those last 5~6 missions where you need to escort that scientist or those 2 missions where you fight a ton of punks armed with Plasma Lances (that you haven't researched yet) and there are no civilians or police around to convince.

I used Trigger Wire (the one that explodes) on at least two missions, otherwise I couldn't have finished the game. One mission is very near the end, where if you alert a group of punks in front of a tank, they'll alert a nearby group, and you'll have to fight almost 20 of them together, plus a tank and one of those fucking hover cars. The Nuclear Grenade is good to thin their numbers, but it's not that good.

I agree with the anon above that said the game is unfinished. There are way too many ways to break the game with Clone Shield and Cerberus IFF. You can practically no-sell at least 10 missions using Clone Shield. There was one mission where you can just strut into the enemy base and steal two tanks right from the start.

All in all, I think the mission that gave me the most trouble was that one where you're protecting executives and they get ambushed. Your agents start separated, and for some reason #1 runs like a retard towards two groups (one of punks and another of zealots), plus a tank. It becomes a little easier once you realize the executives only follow agent #3.

One tip I always tell people in forums is that, if you're fighting a hovercar, see at who it's firing. Usually it'll only fire on one or two of your agents. I know it's clunky af, but if you separate your agents and hide just the target, the hovercar will try to circle around to get a better angle, and won't retaliate against the others.

GOG only goes as far to make it run. In many cases there's a lot of potential (community patches) not being used.

The games don't receive widescreen ratio fixes for example, and you'll have to use Vsync or something else to limit FPS because they dont include any limiter (such as d3d wrappers). Some old games will show game breaking behavior at high framerates.

In some cases they do use community fixes (Thief, System Shock) but they haven't been updated in years. Thief and SS from GOG still run on the NewDark version from 2012, though the last update came out in 2019.

Another example of bad management was shown with Realms of the Haunting, they shipped the old UK (1.4) version instead of the patched US version (1.12) and made use of Dosbox 0.74 instead of 0.74-3.

I could give more examples, but community support always prevails over steam/gog. Simply because love for a game > trying to profit from a game

That's actually a pretty good tactic, I never thought to do that.

I really wish there was some sourceport of Syndicate Wars, because I'd like to run it without jank on a modern PC, also maybe some fan patches to fix a few things, or even add new content. I also wish I could find the Swedish language files (which GOG don't have), I grew up with that, and the original English voice acting just isn't the same.
I really love the aesthetics and style of the game, everything about it just really cool.

"Good Old Games"
It's a company that repackages and republishes old games, bundled together with a compatibility setup in one way or another. I assume they make the offer to some dev or publisher to do it for them as a way for easy money and PR, in exchange for a cut, or the other way around.

>>7239928
>>7245704
In some ways, they're pretty unnecessary because often they just give you a preconfigured DosBox, and you could just pirate the game and set that up yourself. However, sometimes what they do is to sell the game with a patched up .exe that runs properly on modern machines and operative systems, which isn't something that's always available. For instance, if you install Simcity 3000 Unlimited Edition from an original CD onto a Windows 7 PC (or later) computer, it will be crashtastic, the .exe falls apart in just a few minutes. Last I checked, there was no fan solution for this anywhere, no port, no patch, no nothing, but the GOG release works, and it works flawlessly.

Sometimes community patches are applied, but sometimes they do actually provide solutions which aren't readily available anywhere.

>I don't remember much of that mission, it's been a long while, can you refresh my memory?
You play only as Wu, one of the agents in Syndicate 1. He uses the rare purple civilian sprite. You have to go around chasing a woman who betrayed you - every time you get near her, she moves somewhere else. It's the first mission where you absolutely need to use those transport tubes. You use them twice during the mission, and the second time will usually be right in front of three guys with Launchers.
Three things helped me:
- convince everyone you can, including cops.
- when you enter the tube, there's a delay. Activate your shield and press 1 twice to re-center the camera on Wu as quickly as possible.
- run like hell, while keeping right click held down on the three targets.

The trick here is that people you've persuaded will fire on the enemies as long as you keep holding right click on the target. You don't even need to have a weapon yourself.

Not really a good answer. There's a lot of available fixes for running Diablo on later systems, but it's a complete crapshoot whether any of these will work for you, for everyone it does works for, it simply won't for numerous people, and this is for a game where there are actual community solutions available.
