how come out of all retro genres RPGs still hold up the BEST today? Is it because of their fun gameplay and charming characters? Or because of their addictive progression systems and charming stories?

Well, RPGs mainly focus on story, and you dont need very good graphics to tell a good story. Thats not to say that they didnt have gameplay, or that the "movie-games" that the industry shits out today are any good. I have fond memories of playing awesome RPGs, like Might and Magic 6, or Baldur's Gate 2 back in the day

They had what, 4 standalone games and they're on like their 10th iteration of their online games? Seems like a pretty big franchise to me. If anything held the series back from going full FF, it was probably Sega themselves. They had no answer for FF6, let alone FF7, the two games that really solidified FF as the monolithic franchise it became.

Also FF had Uematsu and Amano which was basically cheating.

Around gen 5 they started to have better graphics than other genres because they could devote the time to it and have better use of system resources when they play out in unmoving battle environments one attack at a time. FF7 isn't the best example because its overworld models still looked like shit, it was just a very good game overall, but the prerendered backgrounds were suited to it and the battle models got to be better than most things could afford in resource usage.

Other RPGs that came later in the generation would take greater advantage of the low resource requirements of the genre than FF7.
