How the fuck did I ever manage to like this game, you can't even see anything

>> No.723010

Really? I had zero problems seeing anything on it, and I played it on both original gameboy and gameboy color. It played smooth as butter, and had great music...

>> No.723032

He probably means that the field of view is tiny, making it an extremely frustrating game.

>> No.723062

I don't think I ever finished any of them. Probably because of the crappy save system in the first one. In the second there's a level in Gloomy Gulch with those ghost ropes where you come to a large gap and I could just never figure out how to get over it. Now that I think about, I probably needed to backtrack a bit and climb a bunch of ropes or something. The third one probably just didn't hold my interest since it came out so late.

>> No.723235

I don't really know why anyone likes any of the Donkey Kong Lands. They lack charm, they were just made to fill in the release gaps between the Country games.
Also the graphics are outdated as fuck, god damn it looks horrible.

>> No.723378

I used to love this game as a kid. I 101%'d it SEVERAL times.

I have never tried it again since then. Thanks for reminding me.

Was it land or country that had a yellow case for the cart? I just lost one of those somewhere in my bedroom...

Good animation, new enemies, level themes and layouts.

Same thing as Battletoads in Ragnarok World, rather than making an incomplete console port Rare used to make new levels for the portable version.

Land

only yellow cart (besides pokémon yellow) that would fit in right in with my yellow gbc, so that, i do remember

Land (all of them, I think).

Country was a GBC game with a clear case.

I don't dislike the game for that reason
what bothers me is the funky running physics.

Oh, well then I definitely have to disagree with OP. There are occasions where I don't feel like it's my fault for having died, but they give you so many chances with their life system that it doesn't really matter. It was just Donkey Kong Land lite, but it wasn't bad at all imo.

I remember playing it at some kiosk. Hit the jump button, Donkey Kong fell into an off screen pit, and that was the last I ever played of that.

Oh God, my childhood.

I spent countless Saturdays screaming at this game. I never get mad at video games, but this screenshot exemplifies years of frustration with one game. My parents wouldn't let me get a Super Nintendo, and all my friends were playing this cook game called Donkey Kong Country.

This is what I got instead.

>> No.723498

I love this game I got it when I was 5 from my granny for a birthday gift when I asked for a gameboy game. god damn she picked good vidya for being oblivious. this game also taught me a very important lesson about respecting possessions because I got so angry at the game I smashed the screen of my gameboy against my head and shattered it. holy fuck I was so devastated because I couldnt play donkey Kong land even though I raged at it I loved it. I don't ever have bad rage like that anymore because I know how stupid it is haha.

Your comment got my nostalgia juices pumping. I remember smashing my game boy because I couldn't beat Misty on Red version, and then crying about it all day and getting whupped when dad came home.

I feel that pain.

>going on summer vacation in a motorhome
>allowed one new game: DKL or DK '94
>chose DKL

Ugh, I mean it's not terrible but it made me dizzy. Playing on that tiny ass non-backlit GB screen was a nightmare. I played '94 years later and realized my mistake. I still got 100% though, but still, that's what happens when there's no internet to help out.

similarly I traded one of my sports-obsessed friends some PGA Tour Golf game for Super Mario Land 2

>> No.725236

The one thing I remember about DKL is that it NEVER looked good. Even when it came out it looked horrible, and it has aged like fucking reduced fat milk.

>> No.725242

That level in the 3rd world where you're up in the clouds riding on platforms that change directions when you jump. Fuck it. I bought all 3 DKL games recently and that level is where I have stopped. It's shitty. I beat it once, then my GBA turned off right after before I could save. Never tried again. Rest of game seemed ok. DKC lite.

>> No.726132

Honestly the first Donkey Kong Land was a pretty crappy game, even 100% it isn't interesting.

DKL2 on the other hand I have plenty of fond memories of, tons of interesting secrets and varied levels in that.

I've been playing Zero the Kamikaze squirrel a lot recently and it's one my favourite games. It has it's story intertwined with the second Aero the Acrobat so I decided to try and beat the first one. Oh god that game is awfull. Terrible controls and the save points are so far apart. Never made it past the circus act and played for a few hours. Fuck that game.

Honestly. I was pretty good about Gameboy eye rape when I was a kid but even back then I couldn't play this mess. Everything just blended in together.
