The earlier games are pretty dark and depressing. You feel like shit killing a whole load of innocent people, and you can watch as some dumb peasant is trying to limp away meekly only to trigger your 16ton ball of death trap. Game puts me in a low mood but it is definitely an experience.

Why did they make the game like this? You feel like someone forced to become a serial killer.

The game is a Home Alone simulator. People attack your domicile with the intention of killing you and you set up traps to kill them indirectly. It has some fun combos you can set up. The earlier games are a little clunky, but the series hits its stride when during the 2nd and 3rd games.

It's better to watch the game than play it.

Go play the game and you'll understand why I think that game is better enjoyed that way.
The gameplay is a bit clunky. You enter rooms and set traps, but you can only activate the traps of the rooms you're in. Since the camera is in third person instead of being above your head, it's sometimes difficult to assess where the enemy is compared to the traps you've laid. And that's without taking the less than stellar pathfinding abilities of the AI. I've seen a peasant stay stuck in a corridor (where you can't lay traps) for a while. The payoff of the game is watching the enemy fall victim to the traps.

By watching that game being played, you get the good part, while avoiding the clunky and frustrating parts. A good game must be played, but an average or unequal game can be watched.

I played Deception 2 for the first time in 2017, so I did not have nostalgia goggles on, and I had a lot of fun with it. Its a short game with 20 levels, the game stays fresh introducing different enemy types that have to be baited differently, and getting access to more traps which allow you to experiment. But I guess you have to see for yourself.

A Zoom-Zoom is gonna fire it up and only see the limitations and flaws. Yeah, if there was a new game in the series or a spiritual successor i wouldn't want it to play out exactly the same and i'd want it to be a little bit more polished. But it is still really interesting and offers a totally unique gameplay experience. I can't think of any other game where you can't fight the enemies directly but place traps.

1 is kind of ugly and a bit too rough. 2-3 are worth playing.

A lot of it depends on how much tolerance you have for slow less than refined games from 25 years ago. If you're on /vr/ you should be fine.

I'm not a fan of the change in tone, but they improved the gameplay so much that I'm entirely willing to forgive it. Laegrinna is also a much better protagonist than those in the previous two installments, thankfully.

>>7220983
I enjoyed every game in the series, though in the case of the first game I'll admit that's more due to the plot and how unique the game is rather than the gameplay. The gameplay in the others has some flaws and isn't going to appeal to everyone, but it isn't bad.

>>7221274
I think you'd be better off just enjoying the ride rather than worrying about a "best" ending. This will become even more true if you try the later games, where it's hard to say which ending should really even be thought of as the best or happiest one. Additionally, some of the game's more memorable moments occur when aiming for a "bad" ending. That said, the only thing you really need to know in order to influence Deception 1's ending is that how quickly you eliminate the enemy in chapter 8 is important. There are some choices later on that matter a great deal, but their significance is pretty obvious.

>>7231246
I do really like how Kagero's plot branching works, and how the player's choices and actions shape Millennia's personality. I wasn't a big fan of how the protagonists of 3 and Trapt were basically portrayed as just hapless victims. It got particularly silly in 3, where Reina still acts like a frightened waif who can scarcely bring herself to hurt anyone in cutscenes even after she's killed scores of people.

I have some misgivings about how the overall tone changed in 4, but I think Laegrinna is the best protagonist the series had seen in a while.
