It's a lottery based on how low your health is. Go to yellow health and you start seeing Limit Break appear more often (still random). Press Triangle to re-roll and eventually Limit Break appears. My first FF game was 7 when I played it as a teenager a year or so after it was released on PC. After that I played the SNES ones and recently finish my second playthrough of 7. They've all been entertaining.
Yesterday I started FF8 on a whim and it's absolute shit and anti-fun. The draw system and all it's menu handling in and out of combat is utter cumbersome shit that doesn't want me to bother with that crap at all, having to choose three out of four standard actions apart from attack is fuckshit and why are these summons weak pieces of shit that take longer than me trying to sneak a turd past my hemorrhoids?
And what's with the absolute retarded attitude scoring on the field exam? I need to hurry but taking that shortcut is bad? Why is that niiiiiiiiiiiice teaching lady getting fired when some constant rule breaking idiot like Seifer and his gaggle of misfits get to be the rulecuck squad?
It's like the team threw all sorts of possible ways to create a JRPG onto a table and then decided to go with everything that makes it bad compared to anything that was created in the years prior just for the sake of being different than these games.

Yeah the draw system sucks big time, what were they thinking? Changing things just for the sake of doing things differently? Also the menu rearrangement is not that fun although currently I’m just not using not using items in battle. I bought it for £15 from Woolworths in 2000, figuring that with 4 discs it'll last a long time.
It was the first time I'd ever played a game with a story, edgy teen drama, and it felt great.
I remember fighting the big robot tarantula thing a few hours in and thinking that I HAVE to be near the end of disc 1 by now.

Good game, good memories. played it for short bursts over a year or more before finally beating it. Totally understand the hate for it though.

Music, gameplay, and visuals are all great.
Story is a complete mess with flashes of inspiration here or there but you can tell they had a lot of trouble making it. Just looking at the main party you have two characters who occupy the "optimistic hotheaded retard" slot, Zell and Selphie. Having to characters who are basically the exact same in personality and don't bring anything to the party the other doesn't is a sign something went wrong at the planning stage.

The magic system is a bit stupid but it's not that bad in the end. It's a shame max 9 spells can be drawn at a time but as a redeeming quality farming spells takes very little attention and you can read the news, shitpost here or do whatever while doing that.

Sometimes there are small glimpses of characters getting more than just lip service but they soon get brushed under the carpet because we need more of the romance plot which makes no fucking sense considering Squall has nothing to say to Rinoa until she's in a fucking coma.

I'm not him, but I love the trippy setting and music, as well as the job system. Especially in the remake where I can use Red Mage for the entire game. It is every bit a classic FF as 1, 4 and 5. And is certainly better than FF1.
