The sales were so bad and the games didn't make a profit they had to reboot the series to turn Tomb Raider into an uninspired Uncharted clone with RPG (lmao) elements and microtransactions.

It's a shame really because Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary and Underworld where excellent, they carried the torch of acrobatic platforming after Prince of Persia The Sands of Time and they were much better games overall.

I had a weird experience with this.
My friends know I'm a life-long fan. But I generally hide my powerlevel and it's no big deal in interaction. Some time before corona, I was visiting them. They don't know I'm not on board with nuLara or that nuLara is even a thing, so when I was at their place, they were playing Rise. They had fun with it, since it was their first TR since either Legend or ever. They kinda struggled with combat (PS4 version), but other than that, from their perspective it was fun. In the same time they were mocking the plot and ridiculous level design, but in the same way how you are sitting with friends watching shitty movie together, poking fun out of how bad it is.
And I realised that the main reason why I found that game to be absolutely horrible piece of shit that was not only bad by itself, but also repetitive to the previous game in nauseatic levels was my own investment into the franchise since it exists. They had fun with it, because they were completely casual about it. And in that context, the game worked and was entertaining - by simply playing it out of any context, with only vague brand and character recognition.
This kinda solved the mystery for me how the fuck nuLara sold at all (marketing nonwithstanding). And I had good time sitting with them and passing controller each time they died and each time I've clocked 15 minutes (or else they would spend the evening watching me blitzing through it). Didn't have so much fun with TR since Underworld's demo, which promised me completely different game that Underworld ended up being.
Really weird.

Thanks for reading my blog I guess?

For me it's that the gameplay sucks in the new ones. I hate that linear halway setpiece bullshit and the rest of it is just open world stealth and baby tier platforming and puzzles. Reboot is such a disappointment, they tried chasing that Uncharted clout and failed.
I only come back to Rise from time to time because it's the only game in the reboot that doesn't waste time pretending to be a tomb raider game and is actually a better game(and uncharted game) because of it, I think the setting is also better and uses it to its fullest unlike 1 and 3, where it's constantly fighting with itself to be 4 things at once, "am I tomb raider? kinda feel like a cover shooter today, maybe some stealth? perhaps a survival game? nah" Rise is like "i'm a shooter"
The top down games called "Lara Croft and the..." where better TR games than the Reboot, and it brings Keeley Hawes back.

They went out of business because of it, and the people responsible got fired when Squenix took over. So I guess there is SOME semblance of justice in the universe
Besides, Eidos was always a small fry that accidently became one of the biggest (at least on paper) publishers and never understood how to run their business, so it's less of "learn nothing" and more in tune "utterly out of depth". We are talking about an equivalent of a redneck winning a lottery. Instead of thinking about investing it or securing their well-being in long term, they decided to buy a McMansion and burn money on retarded ideas and projects.
Consider how many successful titles they ended up with in their portfolio in the late 90s and how much they fucked them ALL up, with the sole exception of Hitman, which only stayed afloat thanks to IOI semi-independent nature.

You're gonna get pissed and drop it if you get annoyed by being stuck on the same puzzle for 20 minutes. It's nice that it's different but the one giant room puzzle layout is very frustrating at times. The Egypt level with the tall room that had spinning blades all over the wall drove me crazy and the room with al pool of water below the moving walls that you have to climb up to activate almost made me quit.

The hand holding in Uncharted turned me away after the first few hours. The default auto aim is laughable and reduces combat to basically quick times, there's even a difficulty setting called "just the story". Then if you stand around trying to figure out a puzzle too long whoever you're with just starts explaining it to you which is infuriating. They're obviously games that are made for extreme casuals who just want some mild gameplay peppered on top of a movie. Lara is much more fun to control because of all her acrobatic shit.

I disagree. Pointy tits and elbows 1-3 Lara fits into the low poly world square grid world of tomb raider. Round tits lara of 4 and 5 is out of place. Also she moves slow, and there are weird texture artifacts in Lara 4-5, especially on her face and her expression is worse too. Also not enough outfit variety or interesting vehicles. I'm getting out of topic. Best Lara is tomb raider 3 Lara imo.

I don't want decent, I want great, excellent, people have been conditioned to be too forgiving nowadays and is why you get so many mediocre or okay games, a lot of the times unfinished, and pub/devs take advantage of it. Never ending loop "we're sorry we'll do better next time" proceeds to fuck up or do poorly yet again, but at least "it's an ok game, it's decent, i thought it was fine, it wasn't that bad" cha ching!
Everything is wrong when it becomes a new franchise with the same old name. The devs clearly have lost their vision and talent, the franchise should be handed over to another team that understands it, or make a new IP, and put TR away until the time is right and you find a team for it. Reboot should've been a new franchise unrelated to TR, to cash in on that Uncharted money they clearly wanted.
>the irony of uncharted aping off TR and CD failing to do the same.
They knew the Reboot games were generic and uninspired, they needed that sweet brand to lean on as a safety net. That new Avengers game is a clear example CD sucks as a developer, they got lucky and stopped being good during ps2 gen, they've been going downhill ever since, and not even the biggest properties in the world can save them.

I respect wanting great. I do too. I enjoyed the new games, but they're sort of going with the trend of what's popular.

I'm going to risk sounding like a redditor but fuck it. There's a "Teens React to" Tomb Raider and they compared I think it was the very first Tomb Raider to Rise of the Tomb Raider, and these kids were like "wtf is this shit, I don't know what's happening, the gwafix are so bad I don't know what I'm looking at" and they genuinely much preferred the new one because it was Michael Bay action movie with big avalanche QTEs and that nonsense.

The biggest thing that trigged me about that is I am not a whole lot older than those kids, but it's painfully apparent that they just want to watch a movie and call it a video game. And with those trends, and success of games like The Last of Us and Uncharted it's easy to see why they don't care about the legacy or whatever Tomb Raider was built off previously.

Ok, let's reverse this shit against you.
I work in a library. I'm the only non-archive guy working in library in the entire city. That's not important. The important bit is the kind of bullshit publishers try to push vs. what people actually read.
Ever heard how "modern teens won't read some old ass adventure shit, they need modern books about modern characters to relate to"? The most popular books in teen section in a library are all kinds of classics, at best half century old, at worse thrice as much. The entire YA hype? It existed for grand total of three years, with standard, hype-driven lists of people waiting for the book in queque. Then? NOBODY cares. And the classics are still being rented.
So what you are complaining and talking about is the dissonance one can get from listening only to advertising and marketing, but staying the fuck away from reality.
>but muh graphics
Tell them it's retro. They will instantly dig it, you dumb fuck. Indie devs are literally existing solely on this argument.

It's not easy to find good stuff with old Lara nowadays and I don't save easily accessible galleries like goodies from core-design.com or raidingtheglobe. Last time Lara was revelant globally, your average /v/tard wasn't even born yet or was an infant. The series past AoD is but a shadow of it's previous revelance and recognisability. By LAU, it was just game like many others, by nu-Raider, it was "cool, some old franchise reboot"

We always use him as a litmus test to see how out of touch we are when it comes to knowing what's hip and what kids are into nowdays. It's always a "Fuck, I'm old" moment each time. Like when we had to explain him once what Lethal Weapon is, so he could get the joke about my presence in his sister kitchen by saying "I'm just Riggs to their Murtaugh".

3 years? For young adult book hype? I'm not trying to poke holes, but like, throughout my teenage years Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Percy Jackson were at their peak in popularity. Throughout my whole secondary school (or high school equivalent) life, all the teenagers that were "bookworms" read those adored those young adult books.

>> No.7261073

>>7261037
As far as it worked in my country, HP was completely separate from anything else (and stopped being revelant by '08), Percy Jackson is completely unknown to this day and Hunger Games is what I mean by "3 years of YA hype". Everything that emerged during that time window was just copy-cats that were popular for less than it took to translate them. Grand majority of YA books only get published if they either are written by someone establisher and/or famous or got film adaptation. Otherwise, they are "who/10", and there is no way any publisher will spend a single dime on translation.
As far as bookworm standards go, they read local-written series for young girls, but I think it's more of "my mom liked those and told me to read it" rather than genuine interest in the series (the books were written and set in the 70s). Tolkien is a funny case, because for whatever reason, "Two Towers" has more rents than rest of his books we have in stock combined and it's all a far cry of early 00s rent craze, where you had 10 or more people in a queque for LotR. No clue why. And Lupin is more popular than Holmes, but that's a steady trend since about mid-90s, when Cinar made their "Night Hood".

>> No.7261168

>>7261073
In fact, as far as things rented by teens go, Cussler books that got a pass from the head of the library to be present in the "Children and teens" section are the most rented books there, and by a large margain.
Whenever anything with werewolves is released, Hauger's "The Werewolf and Iselin" skyrockets in popularity. Good read, even if nowdays "werewolf as puberty metaphor" is played-out.
And I can't find the English title for the specific, cheesy Robinsonesque book series, that's super-popular with the demographic of 10-15 boys. The library card of course doesn't have original title, while googling for "Devil's Island" might as well be googling for "Generic Book Title"

It seems to correlate with the graph showing ass versus tits appreciation world wide, which coincidentally also lines up with the graph showing average cup sizes. Basically in areas where women have large cup sizes and low obesity (so no fatty tits throwing off the numbers) people tend to prefer tits over ass, whereas in areas where there is low average cup size, people prefer ass. So evolutionary it makes sense that people would select for traits that would either allow for larger busts (mostly white countries) or larger ass (mostly the rest of the planet).

Wow, this actually looks pretty good, like a natural evolution of Lara's stylized look, from classic Core Laras, to AoD, to Legend/Anniversary Laras, to this.
Her specific head shape, her big eyes, hair, big lips, big bust, hourglass figure, all of this without compromising or sacrificing Lara's signature look, and somehow still manages to looks somewhat realistic, I love it. Hell, even the interpretation of this simple outfit looks galaxies better than anything the Reboots has.
God I wish we got this Lara instead, not this boring ""realistic"" uncharted clout chasing clone. I say realistic but if you've played those games, you know that shit goes out the window in the first 10 minutes, so the whole we're trading the fun unrealistic or stylized aspects of old TR for this reboot to be realistic or grounded, that shit ain't true.
I wish whoever made this would lend this model out to modders so they could mod it into every TR game they possibly can. Is there more from this Artist? perhaps a name? Thank you for posting this, anon.

It's badly applied moderation tool with stupid intentions, but that was the "new plan" by hiroshi to increase his revenue after his initial idiotic plan of "let's monetize memes!" failed, once he realised he can't actually have a market for memes.
Generally speaking any kind of changes to moderation or how boards are run past '15 are one way or another directly linked to hiro being an idiot, but competent enough to still turn profit off the site.
