The GBA SP is the ultimate Gameboy, it just doesn't have the charm of the previous models. It can play NES and SNES games and even runs both Doom games pretty well. I think the 3DS is a superior handheld though, if we aren't just counting retro.

I got hulk hands and the SP has felt too small for me ever since high school. Is the OG a huge step up? Because I've always thought it looked comy as hell to play with.

The gba sp is pretty special I gotta admit. Neatest little console ever. I loved it so much and it's the only portable you could pocket. The L and R buttons are a little painful to use but you get used to it. I should probably get one and a flash card. I wish I could get the v2, better lit one, but they don't really exist in europe.

The only flaw was no backlight, but it still out-classes the SP.

If you haven't already, you should play Advance Wars. Otherwise you're missing out on some good shit.

I love the GBA. It's one of my favourite consoles. Its hardware is super simple: just a powerful (for the time) ARM CPU bolted on to a line-based PPU that's like a modern evolution from the SNES, with sprite rotation and scaling. The strategy was simple too: just resell SNES games to a younger generation. You already know they'll be popular and no one will ask for a graphical upgrade because it's a portable console. The result was an incredibly successful product.

Its mistakes were not having four face buttons and not having a light. Even if a light would have made it more expensive, people were buying external lights for them anyway, and not having a bulit-in light made a bunch of games too washed out. I don't think sound was too much of a problem, since I doubt many kids were listening to it with headphones, and 8-bit audio is fine for the shitty built-in speaker, but I also don't see why it couldn't have had, like, a single 12-bit DAC instead of two 8-bit DACs or something like that, since I doubt anyone has ever cared about stereo sound on a Game Boy.

I liked how the DS felt on my hands better, not to mention you can play GBA games on it too
