>fuck, imma get this jump right this time
>steel self
>jump
>they don't jump
>walk off the edge instead
>random encounter
>end up below

That was frustrating as fuck. That's not even counting those damn cables.

So, frustrating moments in retro games thread? I recall trying to do that "spot the right amount of a certain color" mini game from Kirby's Dreamland 3. I pretty much had to get my whole family to help me with that, each one of us assigned a certain color, and counting it. Didn't help that I more or less had the attention span of a goldfish either.

>try to jump
>hear disc spin up
>encounter
>didn't jump, fall down
>happens another time
>get the clue and trigger a battle before each jump
>get through the tower easily

In the game Xenogears, near the halfway point of the story, the party is unified and the player has just completed a tedious and boring story arc. You have access to a shitton of new equipment for your characters and their mechas, and for the first time in hours, your next destination is obvious and the path leading to it is unambigously pointed out. It's time for a classic JRPG dungeon crawl - all you have to do is stock up in "town" and set out on your adventure!

Your adventure, of course, takes you through a structure of comical altitude known as the Tower of Babel. This is the long lost cousin of the Water Dungeon made famous and infamous in other dungeon crawlers: The Dreaded Vertical Dungeon.

To its credit, the Tower is artistically very beautifully crafted. As you make your way higher within, ominous music chilling you to your spine, you witness bit-by-bit what appear to be the remains of some highly technological, advanced civilization. Only a few hints and clues are ever dropped, and you are left to wonder what it all means. Your imagination and curiosity are stirred. You cannot wait to see this mystery through to the end.

Oh, but you will wait. You will wait because your progress will be halted. Every four steps, the atmosphere will be shattered by an obligatory random encounter, or one of those invisible nonrandom encounters hilariously deployed at the edge of a jump - triggering one of these halts button input but not directional pad input, leaving you free to walk off that cliff you meant to jump from. Say hello to the bottom of the dungeon, enjoy your climb back up! Aren't you glad it's so awe-inspiringly massive?

For fans of the old game looking a relive the experience, have a mostly-complete, probably-dead parody narration.
