I haven't played a beat em up game in over 20 years I think, what are your FAVOURITES? I remembered playing a game with a baby in a mech suit when I was a kid and I'm excited that I found out what game it was. Also, did anyone play this game?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gr_E80ZhDQ
I also remember playing a beat em up that had upgrades and creepy enemies but I cant remember the name.

I will recommend one per company:

Capcom: Alien vs Predator
Konami: Violent Storm
Sega: Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder
SNK: Sengoku 3
Technos Japan: River City Ransom
Irem: Undercover Cops

I'll focus on arcade ones :
Ninja Baseball Bat-Man
The Punisher
Alien vs Predator
Battletoads (the arcade one, not the NES one)
Sailor Moon (the arcade one, console ones are pure crap)
Undercover Cops
X-Men (the 6-player one, if you can bring 5 friends it's fucking awesome. Solo runs are boring AF)

Like the other anon said, credit feeding turns any arcade from a game into a toy; per the definition, if there is no competition, there is no game, and if there is no potential to lose or even be set back, there is no competition.

Final Fight (arcade version) is my personal favorite. Each enemy has clear weaknesses and strengths, with certain abilities being better answers to them, although not devolving into a simple game of Simon Says (i.e. in certain situations you actually will want to use an attack that's normally considered "bad' against them). This is then fulfilled in the different compositions of enemies, either covering each other's weaknesses or really focusing on a given strength from different angles (e.g. the Andores and the fat guys both are offense-oriented and have charging attacks, but operate differently and use their charging attacks is somewhat different ways, plus Andore uses his basic punch more often). The first level is just kind of a tutorial, but meaningful compositions start appearing in stage 2--the very first enemy encounter combines slow, strong enemies who can block with fast, nimble ones who can leap over and behind the player. This calls for defensive tactics, while some groups might demand the player to rush in instead, lest Holly Wood throw knives at you or do his dive attack from across the screen. Boss fights are kind of lame though imo and you don't miss much by cheesing with the infinite punch glitch. Battle Circuit is kind of the opposite, with good bosses but pointless grunt encounters.

It's a very strategic genre when you have a small pool of lives to defend instead of getting to brute force it all.

>> No.7204559

>>7204317
Final Fight anon again. Obviously I'd recommend FF, though it really only starts to show its worth once you get an understanding of all of your abilities; if you're really interested in the genre, stick with it for a bit. If you aren't willing to acquire the taste then maybe the genre isn't for you.

Konami's licensed bemups were understandably popular due to being technologically impressive and full of references, but haven't really stood the test of time. Throws are random/not manually done like in FF or most Capcom bemups; in those, it was a maneuver that was sort of risky (you had to walk directly into an enemy to grab them, so you had to make sure you wouldn't just get hit on your way) but rewarded with decent damage and one of a precious few defensive options since it allowed for crowd control in the form of an informal projectile along with invincibility frames, but it's just part of a combo in X-Men and TMNT. Thus, not only is it one less option to do on command, but it always tosses the target backward, making it hard to properly manage crowds, when crowd control is ordinarily the most important part of bemup combat. Not only that, but the physics are wacky and inconsistent (compare jump attacks in X-Men or TMNT to Final Fight's) and the strikes don't have as much of a feeling of impact as they should, making it not only less satisfying but harder to tell when you actually landed a hit (which is important because attacking from a distance makes those accursed auto-throws less likely to happen). Enemy variety is also much less emphasized iirc, resulting in less interesting compositions and overall less tactical combat.

If stuff like The Simpsons and X-Men made up most of your experience, then I can't blame you for having found them to be "pretty retarded button mashers that sometimes looked interesting artstyle-wise."

>but it's just part of a combo in X-Men and TMNT
If it wasn't clear: in something like FF, mashing attack against an enemy will do a basic couple of strikes, ending in a strong hit that causes a knockdown. Alternately, the player can walk into the opponent and doing so will result in a grab, from which the player can throw the enemy in either direction. In TMNT and X-Men, mashing attack may result in a backwards throw rather than a regular finisher into knockdown, and there is no way to simply go right in for a grab and a deliberate throw.

It's much harder/less intuitive to design enemies who might be particularly weak to or strong against throws this way, and those sort of weaknesses and strengths were important to the enemy variety of FF, which of course would play into player tactics for given mobs.

Seems like I struck a nerve. Guess the argument is over, time to go play videogames or something.

I'll just leave with this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skhoqmvl8s8
Yes, he uses a turbo button. Yes, it's a very efficient option. Thing is, it's only "efficient," it's not like it overrides the mobs or their strengths--only after the enemies are all corralled into one spot or all but one are defeated can he let loose, meaning that the battle had already been effectively won by that point; beat em ups are about crowd control, and the crowd had been decisively controlled by then. Even then, he only was able to let loose after making proper use of throws, both kinds of jump attacks, the special move, and weapons/spacing in order to get to the point at which he could let turbo rip (and even THEN it wasn't always enough, as sometimes he'd get him from offscreen by a Gato/Holly Wood slide attack when he was mashing turbo).

You're free to enjoy Konami beat em ups if you want, but FF is undeniably a tactical game.

It's a genre that's easy to hop right into and have fun, but also easy to get disillusioned with quickly by approaching it the wrong way. Wow such tactics! Look man, I agree with you. I love final fight and golden axe and other beat em ups with effective tactical approaches that can be learned but posting a video were the first move is to minimize the amount playing you have to do makes it looks terrible.
Yes, i know its minimizing the risks taken in a serious attempt but only people who are already into the genre are going to care let alone appreciate what the player is trying to do.
The only way to show people that beat em ups have worth is to encourage them to have a handful of credits, no continues, and see how far they get each time. If one tactic clicks, even one, then there is a good chance that they will understand why people like it. That's the least you should aim for. If luck strikes, they might even come to like it themselves.
