They also spell it as "paedophile". Became "ped" because the phoneme "ae" is pronounced "eh" in Latin iirc, and Anglos have a tendency to make the letter e have a long-e sound while Americans have a tendency to pronounce vowels in "foreign" (etymologically non-English) words similar to as they in Latin, so there's the answer to that possible discrepancy.
