In a practical sense, it's not entirely avoidable, but there's always a split second where they lower their guns towards you before opening fire, which you can attempt to account for in one way or another.

A good idea is to either stay out of line of sight of hitscanners if you can, or regularly break your line of sight, the longer you're visible to them, the more time they have to take aim and shoot at you. Of course, since their aim is often imperfect, and they cause harm indiscriminately on impact, hitscanners are easy to exploit for monster infighting.

Neat stuff. I figured the Nightmare Imps were added just because it would real easy to play with the palette and it added a good intermediate enemy, a little tougher than regular imps and they have faster projectiles, great addition. Nightmare Demons were clearly just to upgrade the Spectre overall. Cartridge real estate is a deluxe asset to manage, and adding something worthwhile to the gameplay while barely touching your allotted space at all is in my opinion very professional.

Thinking about it, I guess there really only was one set of Light Amp goggles in the entirety of Doom 64, which isn't hard to understand, they're a difficult item to add to a level, because usually they'll make your level look worse, even Sandy, who was very experimental and had minute regard for visual design, used them very sparingly, and he used it more than the other guys. The original game's E2M6 is really the only Doom level I can think of where the goggles are actually a useful addition to the gameplay, with that dark and cramped spooky maze.

Only barely in the games you mentioned, Blood cultists have insanely high reaction times so you'll still be taking some chip damage with every fight unless you can throw dynamite at them first, but not every fight lets you do that. Sure you can crouch to fuck with their accuracy but it doesn't make you 100% safe.
and the hitscanners in Douk are complete cunts, so I'm not sure what you're talking about there. You can dodge a pig cop's shotgun blast maybe but a battlelord and lizcommando are gonna take some HP off unless you have some cover.

Mechanically it makes monsters randomly aim to your side instead of straight at you when they fire a hitscan or projectile attack. I'm not sure by how many degrees, unfortunately. This is what makes a blursphere bad against projectile enemies, because they can by chance appear to predict your path when you're circle-strafing them.

It doesn't affect melee at all from what I know, because melee in doom is in fact not a hitscan attack. It's basically just a distance check, so there's no built-in way for it to miss if the victim is in range.

>TWM01.wad is heavily inspired by Doom II's MAP14: The Inmost Dens, which Mustaine refers to as his favorite map from the game. After visiting id's offices in person to submit the map, Shawn Green, who was in charge of quality assurance for the Master Levels project, played for a few minutes before leaving the room to fetch American McGee. McGee, the author of the original Inmost Dens, was apparently nonplussed with Mustaine's attempt at a tribute due to it being too similar to his own work, and declared, according to Mustaine, "...go make some of your own geometry! We aren't putting this in the Master Levels."

The discussion was whether or not it's possible to dodge htiscanners. In fact, at the first the question wasn't even "dodging" but "avoiding damage".
That's talk about game design mechanics.

You shifted the discussion from that to "there are some situations where there is not enough toom to dodge!", just so you could win the argument.

So I joined that conversation to say I disagree to some extent because of those situations I bring up. Admittedly my memory on Douk's hitscanners is really fuzzy, I haven't played that game in a long time, Blood's still fresh on my mind though, and even through a good fight I'd still take a few hits. So I watched Lycanthorn review by Hungarian bus, and I have a serious question - when it comes to boss design, how come it never occurs to modders to, like, just circlestrafe around boss in one direction non-stop for some time and see if it is even able to hit you? So a few things to help you here:
>hitscanners will generally attack you as soon as they see you, even if you're so far away that the bullet spread is too wide to reliably hit you
>chaingunners are an exception because they fire so fast that they'll inevitably get hits in no matter the distance
>there's a stat monsters have in doom called "pain chance", which is the odds of them flinching when hurt; hitscan monsters generally have very high ones and low health - sometimes the best solution against a hitscanner is to just be very aggressive and kill them as soon as possible
>this next one is super important; your chaingun has a strange quirk where the first bullet it fires always hits dead center regardless of distance; you can "chain snipe" by steadily tapping the fire button
>hitscanners having high pain chances means if you focus on them with the chaingun's sniping trick, they can rarely fire off a shot
>the one exception to all this is the spider mastermind, who might get several shots off before flinching, but unlike most hitscanners the mastermind has a moment where they stop to aim at you before firing; if you see a mastermind light up, face you and stop, hide behind something as soon as you can
>if there's no cover to hide from the mastermind, you might be able to suppress them with the plasma rifle or just kill them ASAP with the BFG

That is true. Their reaction to hitscans to forget how to do anything for a second or two does make them much easier to manage overall. The thing this argument never seems to acknowledge is that there is a chance that they will shoot you first before your weapon can even have line of sight with them at times.

Are they manageable? Yes. Can techniques be used to minimize how much damage you take in an encounter vs them? Absolutely. Should they have a minor startup to their attack with a decreased maximum aggressiveness? You bet your bippy.

Think of it like this: In Doom, with max aggressiveness but no fast monsters, there is a minimum of 10 frames before he can shoot you, from the moment any part of you enters his line of sight. the aggressiveness means that he will always choose to shoot the moment he can, so his reaction time is very fast, yet consistent due to the startup frames before he fires. From what I can tell, Cultists do not have that delay (or at least if they do, it is only a frame or two,) and instead their decision to fire that initial shot is based entirely on the aggressiveness variable. This is the thing that tends to piss off new Blood players so much, somewhat understandably. Having their average aggressiveness be increased while having a slight startup to their attacks would remove the possibility of players being shot before they finish emerging from a corner while still having them be just as deadly. Their overall design and usage in many maps is fine, but they do have a quirk that could certainly be improved without minimizing them in any way. I know a lot of people who love them as enemies hate how people new to Blood bitch about them so much, but acting like they are perfect is just as bad honestly.

Can you tell me why you think a game which functionally is only just BARELY above Wolfenstein 3D in terms of depth of gameplay and technology, was in any way going to compete directly with a game which by everyone is regarded as much better than Wolfenstein 3D in every way?

At least Rise Of The Triad expanded the engine like crazy and took it far into weird and different directions, and actually had novel gameplay which had many distinctions from Doom's. If you like Blake Stone that much you will be delighted to hear that I restarted (because it took forever to redraw the sprites and textures) work on a Blake Stone mod for Doom. Difference is that there is a "hub" floor per episode and added verticality in the different locations. The basic concept of finding keys to unlock more floors remains. I'm also investigating the possibility of different goals per floor, like blowing something up (ala Planet Strike) or killing a specific NPC or enemy. That's something I've let go of doing in the last year or so, in all these shooters, after having done it for at least twenty. You just don't remember the encounters as much if you're saving every moment or even mid-fight, and the levels in all of these games are short and good enough to warrant going without them. If it's too hard I'd rather lower the difficulty now.
So when I started getting into Marathon it was an absolute delight to see those checkpoints! Those, the ability to change difficulty mid-playthrough, weapon altfires and reloading, this game is awesome. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the one no one else is: The "checkpoints" extending to when you can change the settings. Just a problem at the start, though.

lol the texture resizing is my favorite part. It makes the black outlines, and hence the paint splashes, gibs, enemies, etc., look like hand-drawn cartoons, like the Simpsons. The black outlines look wavy in the screenshots but you move around so fast in-game you can't tell. It's hard to tell from the screenshots, but the game is much more vibrantly colorful in software mode because the color palette is limited - focus on the far away walls of those screenshots above, for example. With that said, I decided prefer hardware mode simply because I like the cartoon-y look from texture upscaling, and you can't do that in software mode without graphical glitches or crashes. Both look great, and changing from software mode with autoaim and no-free-look (a la classic Doom) to hardware mode/no-autoaim/free-look adds another layer of replayability to this great game, as autoaim/no-free-look is absolutely devastating to enemies, especially large clouds of floating ones, and this increased killing speed and power comes with its own sense of satisfaction, but you can't engage distant targets, nor properly lead with rockets, and it makes tossing grenades much harder; whereas for freelook with no-autoaim you will not be as effective in general, but you can snipe, properly aim rockets and grenades, and the increased challenge of the combat make it more intense and rewarding.
Freelook AND autoaim gives you the best of both worlds but it's fake and gay.

It can be unfair to compare Valiant to Square, as Square had seven level designers compared to one, and one is still Doom. Anyway I think they are similar because they are both about enemy projectile spam, and levels focused around player movement. Like I said, in this very moment, I'm having more fun with Square, but I'm also nearly done with Valiant and I'm struggling on it since I'm playing pistol-start no-saves, whereas currently Square is as forgiving as Valiant used to be and it's just a goofy fun kill-crazy rampage time.

>Cultists getting staggered through damage isn’t really an “argument”, unless you’re referring to other random anons who claim their instant attacks are fully justified because of how you can manage them?
Yeah, I see it get brought up a lot as a justification for that, since their pain response is arguably more exploitable than the ones in other games.

I initially just recommend the same thing I went through: Bite the bullet and lower the difficulty. The numbers, the damage, the accuracy, the aggressiveness, health, it’s all more manageable. With the ports and their difficulty options it’s now pretty hard to complain
Kinda. LB is definitely a good and fair entry difficulty, and is plenty reasonable in terms of most of those things. The reason I still think aggressiveness, even there, is still not good is because it still functions in a range. Its hard to break it down exactly, but even with less aggressiveness, they can still instant attack, it just becomes less likely, as well as lower difficulties having less accuracy. The change I would rather see would be to clamp their aggressiveness differently by having more forced startup time with a lower maximum time between attacks. Those aggressiveness settings can make them sometimes still attack instantly before even being in LoS, but they just weight the calculation to make them more likely to not attack at all and wander around more between shots or dynamite tosses. I think thats the real change their AI needs but it feels like a lot of people either don't understand the difference, or mistake it as just complaining.

Also while I like how versatile the options can be with the custom difficulty of FS, its bugs and quirks make it less fun for me overall. I'll gladly trade being killed by doors vs things like the spray can being completely useless.

>Yeah, I see it get brought up a lot as a justification for that, since their pain response is arguably more exploitable than the ones in other games.
This is true. Instant hitscans also happen frequently in the other games, they're just not as damaging. An enforcer can point blank instantly fire for like a whopping 5 damage.
This is also a continued tradition in FEAR, it's just that again the damage received is greatly lower in comparison to what happens in Blood.
>Kinda. LB is definitely a good and fair entry difficulty, and is plenty reasonable in terms of most of those things
I don't agree. Still Kicking and Pink On The Inside have the most comfortable cultist reaction times and accuracy to get used to how the game works. Lightly Broiled for a newcomer is a very rough bump.
>Also while I like how versatile the options can be with the custom difficulty of FS, its bugs and quirks make it less fun for me overall.
That's where GDX saves the day. Set the damage dealt to 1 or 2 and that's the equivalent to enemy behavior and aggression to Still Kicking or Pink on the Inside. Tinker health and spawns how you'd like, it's all very comfortable and what I consider to be the most ideal way to balance difficulty while getting fairly faithful gameplay.
Noone's going to get exactly what they want with how cultists operate but they're easy to manage now with these ports.

What do you think about the bug in original Blood (DOS) that inverted difficulty settings after a save/load? i.e. if you start on skill 1 and save/load everything stays the same except enemy damage is suddenly extreme; and if you start on skill 5 and save/load, everything is the same except the damage you receive is bare minimum. Skill 3 remains unchanged

I think I wanna use that bug to do a extra crispy playthrough but the reaction time is still virtually instantaneous. Maybe I'll do well done with the bug.

Quake 2 SMG has textures for muzzle flashes, but the meshes were never made.
All of the Other models needs a revamped model upgrade for its 1st person animations due to clipping in higher resolutions and gun/projectile position.

I think even Daikatana, Soldier of Fortune and Kingpin fixed these issues, while no one over the years ever bothered to fix it due to multiplayer, though most Q2 demos that i see, even Q2pro forks fixed that.

and there are videos on YT that do the same on EC but I don't care about EC myself.

E1M2 is indeed one of the hardest ones. It's not a question of "even", it's a question that episode is the least balanced in that aspect.

Everything about how supplies are handled in EP1 tells me that it was intended for continuous play, like having a super secret rocket launcher at the VERY end of the first level when there is no way to use it.

They fixed that shit in the other episodes.

So if you want to pitchfork start, start with the other episodes.

We know Romero was working closely with Raven during the development of Heretic as a consultant and was friends with the guys as Raven and he was also helping/consulting and going to the offices to see Tom when RoTT was being made around the same time. Nothing against trans people, but Arlene does plenty amateur errors with her maps. She shouldn't have deserved cacoward. There's the performance issues, but worse is that she has no concept of how to make challenging gameplay. She doesn't even play on UV, nor can beat her own maps. She also likes to make challenging/slaughtery maps, which is obviously very shitty combination with the lack of gameplay skills. This means she can't properly test the map herself nor actually create fun challenges. She could still evolve, but unability to take critism and her beign a one cacoward reviewer leads to bad things. Expect her not evolving her design, and gaining cacowards from lackclustre wads in future too.

Not saying he didn't do anything, but I really can't find any info on what he really did with Raven, yes he is credited as a producer role, but that is a very general title that can range from complete control of the project to none at all. The most I could find is that he helped set up and train them with the iD dev tools and general help with the doom engine (even at that there's some interviews where he didn't sound to helpful). It just doesn't feel like he was the brainchild or a creative lead on heretic. As for rott, that's clearly Hall's baby.

It's very good. It has that 90s map design in a good way as it imagines itself as a third Final Doom wad. It doesn't copy the other two nor other 90s megawads, but instead has it's own unique feel. There's plenty of puzzles, but they are quite fun. Combat has some fun challenges, but it's not burning me out like in most modern wads.

It has few new textures, new enemy and a new boss (which appears 2 times).

He was giving them ideas and advice and staying up to date on development of both games. He has talked about going to the offices of Raven and Apogee to play the latest alpha and beta builds just because he loves games. It was his idea and insistance that got Carmack and the other founders to agree to license out their engine and Romero picked Raven specifically to work with first. He was a brainchild but I wouldn't say it's a stretch to say like:
>Romero has seen all the story and design materals for Heretic as they are being fleshed out
>Carmack decides after telling Tom Hall and Scott Miller they would license a Wolfenstein 3D sequel to Apogee to do, changes his and says that the offer is no longer on the table as he doesn't want competition for Doom's release but allows them to still use the engine (and even helps with additional code, some of Doom's networking code ended up in ROTT as well)
>Romero is of course aware of this and feels bad, is talking to Tom throughout and so is aware of the decision to scrap previous world for Wolf3D Part II and make a different shooter, wants to call it "Rise of the Triad"
>Romero: "Whoa dude fuckin that game that Raven is doing with the spells and shit on Doom's engine? The bad guys are called the Order of the Triad and they can cast like magic missles and shit like your guy El Oscuro and his monks. You could even put a staff weapon in dude!"
>this, while not official or announced, is canon, just like the shit obviously decided after the fact by Tom and Romero that BJ is Commander Keens dad and he is Doomguys dad.

Not saying the above scenario is what happened but it's a believable one, it's not hard for me to buy.

What version did you play?

I played 1.8 twice, first time on UV I did continuous play on most maps, pistol start on about a third of them near the start, and saves
Second play I did pistol start every map on UV, and only saving with bullshit like the barrels of fun part or walking on lava.

I thought only two maps were really hard on pistol start, map 17 and another one later on.

Suicide bombing with a grenade(didn't know you could fumble for stuff in your pockets while pinned down, cool shit) freed me of the doggies, and I spent the next ten seconds panicking and jump sliding away while I fumbled around for a berserk pack in my bag, burning the whole way. Had to end the level high on heroin and stumbling off the pentagram into the exit, HD is the fucking bomb.

Doom 2 was the very first game I remember playing, though admittedly I hadn't touched any of them for years until I got a 360 copy of the BFG Edition like five years ago so my roommate and I could get drunk and blast through co-op.

This map needs more diagonals and more sector over sector, although I suppose that part on the top left is ROR so that's nice

Hexen2 is pretty decent and not as enigmatic as people say.

Unless you turn your brain off in the Egyptian level and become agitated when confronted with big words from astrology.

This map takes place in an industrial building, so lots of diagonals wouldn't really make sense. I'll see what I can do with ROR, there's more verticality than you might assume.

The original Build games were all about mixing realism with pure cool senseless stuff. See E1M1 in Blood, you have the corpse lockers high up above and around the main room, in a corridor. That stuff makes no sense but it makes for a better level layout.

So I say forget about sense, but that's just me, build whatever you like to build.

balancing this is hands down one of the more difficult aspects of mapping ive found. anyone have specific tips? it's hard to not aspie out replicating sedimentary/geological layers and formations or making ostensibly human designed bases into avenues for fun encounters by adding ridiculous bullshit (see half life)

Maybe try again, instead of being really passive aggressive where the people you're mad at can't see you. Why would an imaginary award from them matter to you anyway? You should be creating because you enjoy it and want to make something that others might also enjoy, if you're creating because you're hoping for praise, you're way off course.
