Valis is a series that could absolutely benefit from a new game, because at its absolute best the series is ok and at worst it is actual kusoge.
Given the last Valis game, though, I certainly wouldn't be hyped about any new entry.

Original computer versions, even on the might Sharp x68000 (no fault of the platform, it is a direct translation of the PC98 version, jerky scrolling and all), are absolute bottom of the barrel garbage.
Genesis version of 3 is good. Otherwise, you are correct. The series is basically only good on the PC Engine.

Hm, I didn’t know Super Valis Akatsuki no Otome got put up on the switch eShop. But then again so many games get uploaded to it everyday and I don’t check it everyday, so I guess unless you already knew about it you’d have no way of knowing, and the search function on the eShop is quite bad.

Hopefully it’ll be an actual game and not just be a special event for some mobile phone gacha game. But knowing the current Japanese game market, I bet that’s all it’ll be sadly. Stupid phone game market.

Valis 1-3 is pretty jankwave, 3 on Genesis is decent, most people think 2 on PCE is the worst and Syd is a retard version of 2
The "remake" of Valis 1 for PCE CDROM (even though it's the only Valis 1 on the system) is one of the best Valis games and it was made after the original versions of 1-4.
Valis 4 is the one everybody likes but on PCE, the SNES version is a completely different game

Valis 2 on the X68000? Or PC Engine?

I admit that once I got over the terrible jumping controls/physics, and the extreme jank (no i-frames leading to massive damage losses) I really enjoyed Valis 2 on the x68k. It has a grittiness and meanness that the rest of the games lack, which at least helps it stand out. Plus collecting outfits is a cute way to get you to explore and look for buffs... They will make you wish for more Valis 1. Assuming you played the PCE version; that game looks, plays and sounds great, it just has fucked up difficulty balancing and garbage checkpoints.
The various computer versions sound absolutely fantastic. But look mediocre and play so bad it has to be experienced to be believed. To try to explain though, the MSX and PC88 have no hardware support for scrolling playfields and it is a side scrolling action game. The x68000 version, despite being on the most powerful 16bit platform this side of the Neo Geo, is basically the PC98 version but ever so slightly less janky and ugly.

>Is the English translation for Valis 2 PC Engine bad?
Considering it translates Valis Sword as Bari Sword at random points...

The PC Engine dubs of the Valis games are incredibly laughable and infamous for how shitty they are. Their saving grace is that they don't 'change' story elements or localize, they just translate so literally and poorly that you have little clue of what's going on.

For context I'd say watch the cutscenes of Valis 1 on the genesis (the second-to-last cutscene takes up like 7 minutes in a 25 minute game loooooooooool) which sets up the world. Note I didn't say play, because Valis 1 on the genny plays like shit.

In Valis 2, the first 2 bosses are hard-gay thugs left over from Valis 1's baddy's army, the rest are the new crew from the flaming homo Megas himself.

Valis 2 has an entirely different story on the X68000 (and japanese PCs), and it tells a more interesting one full of melodrama with some fucked up bits. The PC Engine is more straightforward shoujo battle story, and I guess I would say the x68k etc. is more leaning into seinen. It's worth playing through at least once if you like the series, but the tradeoff is that it plays like shit (not impossible, but just like shit - you get used to it after restarting once or twice).

>>7188639
the extra final boss was Valia or whatever the queen of dreamland was, lol
IIRC in that version she was a secret cunt that caused all of the events to transpire to get rid of Rogles, her rival (and also a cunt). It's a neat dark twist but it makes no sense in the context of the rest of the series so they just ignored it, lol.

This is why the quality dropped on the average. Back in the day revenue streams were more varied. Everybody watched TV so you had commercials. Merchandising was huge. And you could sell the show itself on home video. Today's streaming services have wrecked TV viewership and nobody buys home media anymore. The heyday of anime VHS and Laserdisc is long gone. So the market shifted away from the average viewer and toward the whales. That's created a feedback loop where a super small group of hardcore fans is responsible for 80% of the revenue. Making those people happy then becomes the entire goal.

AFAIK, yakuzas still are the main sponsor of nip entertainment industry, and until recently, I think that subversion attempts were somewhat marginal. Also, recognizing the studios that signed a deal with the devil is pretty easy, as their series tend to have both a progressive tone and high production values. Take a look at early 2000's Madhouse, their series were visually top notch, while being pozzed as fuck (watch Black Lagoon if you haven't yet, you'll see what I mean). If I'm not mistaken, they had a deal with the J.P. Morgan bank. For what it's worth, I'm also suspicious about Mappa, Trigger, and whoever worked on Beastars
