I actually paid only $50 in 2014 for the investor version. And I remember I could buy the limited version for less than $40 when preorders started in 2017.

I guess it's their way to thank early supporters and take in account scalpers reselling 'rare' games 5x the price they bought it.

>> No.7182393

Considering all the gay ass copy protection I'm sure Fonzie included, I wonder how long it will take for someone to dump a working rom.

Of course, most of the people who bought it are busy blowing him on the Sega 16 forums for finally releasing the game after 8, years so they probably won't.

Someone will eventually be motivated enough to figure out the emulator side of things. If nothing else just to fuck over Fonzie, otherwise just pure Autistic drive. Probably gonna be a year or two at least though.

>>7182629
There is some port on top of the cart that is supposedly going to allow patching or dlc either direct from a PC or via network connection of some type. Different people are saying different shit about it like its for netplay, and I just don't care to look it up so maybe I'm wrong. But the people who got their shipping emails posted the text and I recall it saying something about how the game is gonna be buggy and not compatible with all genesis models, but it would MAYBE be fixable down the line. That makes me thing the port is going to be used for patches.

>> No.7182684

>> No.7182836

If people actually get physical carts soon, I am very curious to see footage from the game. If it isn't a buggy mess and is actually a good game, I would still be hesitant to put in an order, the horrible follow through on fulfillment is not confidence inspiring and not a fan of the huge mark up in price. But streams of the game, definitely looking forward to that.

Even back in Pier Solar, they did an ass-backwards copier check, so anyone that tried to duml the ROM only got one bank (32kb) mirrored repeatedly, instead of the whole ROM. There's website where some guy document how he finally dumped the ROM (if you google "hacking pier solar" you'll provably find it or a mirror), and boy... it wasn't easy. First of all, it's a stupid idea by Fonzie to lock people out since a lot of people use new tech to play. Clones are common.

Secondly, you're wrong. It triggers for multiple real consoles too. There's reports of this at Sega-16. Paprium only works on certain official Mega Drives, it even states so in it's FAQ. And it's fucking dumb.

But to be honest, it's not a big loss. The game seems real unfinished.

How is that different from something like Doom on SNES, which is running basically entirely off an add-on chip?

>> No.7186803

>>7186762
Well, back then it was a necessary evil. A super cpu on a cart feeding completed frames to a super nes was the simplest and cheapest way to reach the largest market.
But today with $10 worth of components these "enhanced" cartridges could be outputting their own video and sound and have a USB input for controllers. The megadrive is pretty close to a completely unnecessary and irrelevant hardware requirement. It's akin to requiring you wear a cowboy hat while playing, the hat does nothing other than fulfil the developer's wishes.

>> No.7186823

>>7186803
I get your argument. But at the same time, much like SNES Doom feels like an SNES game because it must conform to SNES color and sound limitations, anything on a Genesis expansion chip will still have to look and sound like a Genesis game.

Yeah, it does occur to me that with modern storage, you can get around the limitation on both SNES and Genesis by just streaming a pre-recording.
For aesthetic reasons, I can't image anyone doing it much. It turns out like those tacky "High Quality Sound" romhacks. Where it sounds like you are just playing the game with someone's cover track from youtube on in the background.

Indie devs who aren't idiots make games on cart for the high price, but also put the game on Steam and give the rom in the process, because that's where the money comes from, selling tons of cheap units on Steam, not selling a few units for 170$ when it costs you 150$ to produce that.

First, that's assuming that the ROM could work in any emulator (which I doubt because of that custom DSP which apparently is also used for graphic data real-time decompressing and sprites zooming) or that they coded their own emulator for it to work in Steam (which seems a lot of work for not much gain).

And even if they were selling digital ROM, why would I spend money for a ROM on Steam when it is going to be made freely available to anyone the minute after the first people bought it?

I am sure antipiracy will eventually be defeated some day and emulators updated to support the ROM but I bet it will take time ... maybe even more time than Pier Solar.

>why would I spend money for a ROM on Steam when it is going to be made freely available to anyone the minute after the first people bought it?

Your personal logic doesn't apply to everyone. Some studies show that piracy helps sales.

I pirated Micro Mages when it came out and eventually liked it enough when it was -50% sale on Steam. I'd never have bought it if I didn't play it first.

Also, notice how everyone was talking about Micro Mages. That's because vg journalists and people alike had a rom they could play. Nobody's talking about Pooprium because nobody has their hands on it, and on top of this nobody can refute the "lol it sucks" claims from people who haven't played it exactly because noone can play it.

Fighting piracy is a lost cause anyway. Their whole process is completely backwards.

> (which seems a lot of work for not much gain).

Comparing to similar products, they'd have a few thousands sales on Steam at the very least, and that's comparing with games which did really poorly or where Steam wasn't their main targeted platform.

Here is my Paprium impression so far. Moustachio over promised and greatly under delivered. The Music is great. But doesn't necessarily fit a beat em up. The sound effects are muffled and flat. Which is a mortal sin in a game like this. The spritework is amateurish. The character design is lame. The animations are choppy. The game does not flow very nicely. The whole thing is cringe. I wouldn't bet on it happening any time soon. Pier Solar took years and the glitching method that ended up being used was extremely lucky.

There is almost certainly no DatenMeister chip, overwhelmingly likely it's a rebadged *something else* chip. There is a pic in the thread but I don't know the form factor by looking at it. There are extremely few commercial CPUs that don't have at least some attempt at emulation, but the same can't be said for FPGAs If anyone feels like doing some digging, there aren't that many manufacturers for the latter so it probably wouldn't take long to browse their catalogues and see if it looks very similar. That said, the copy protection on them can range from naive to highly advanced. The other option is that there really is a DatenMeister chip that was fabbed for the game, but I'm not convinced even Fonzie's that autistic even though he's on the deep end as far as all this stuff goes.

At any rate depending on how the game interacts with the chip, it could be possible just to fake the necessary parts and get the game running without as the bare minimum, but even that's a lot more work than it sounds.

FPGA tech does make other approaches easier though. An FPGA console that the game worked on can be made to log instructions and data as they are processed so they could be pieced together based off that. You won't get a perfect dump that way but it could be a first step towards getting something playable.

It probably will. There is an option within the game itself to disable the special "Datenmeister" sound chip and to just play the audio using the regular Genesis hardware.

Somebody who knows their way around the Mega Everdrive FPGA will have to figure out the Datenmeister chip audio later.

>> No.7197119

>>7197035
According to Tiido who worked on early version of that game, the DSP is still used when this option is enabled: it's just that instead of playback through the cartridge audio pins, the DSP audio stream is read by the sound engine running on the z80 (in the console) and sent to YM2612 DAC channel.

The game uses several extra chips, it won't play in a emulator.

I have a real genesis. Will a rom of this work with one of those everdrive chinese clones?

Probably not

why not? Is Pier Solar working with a real genesis through one of those carts?

>>7218309
I'm not sure. But since it has special chips it probably only works through emulation (after someone implements that functionality into some genesis emulator)

pier solar used a chip for memory mapping and a bit of encryption, it was a glorified mapper
pooprium use it for data decompression, sound, and probably encryption as well, it's doing much more
