I did output 1920x1200 to a FW900 via VGA, but what I really meant was that some older graphics cards will not be able to output at that high of a resolution. At the acceptable resolutions of the day like 320x200, 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 is there a non-CRT monitor I could get which scales that output well? I figure a 1440p and 4k screen could have enough pixels to display the old resolutions without added blurriness.

I did this as a no ISA cope, and as nice as it is when it works there's a good amount of games that will crash the system when they talk to that DSDMA TSR for sound blaster support. ISA is absolutely essential if you're serious about DOS compatibility. Lotta things I end up running on my XP partition with DOSbox. With a CRT using the game's native res it's a nice silver medal anyway.

Their Yamaha emulated sounds are a lot harsher, but they pretty much are there for the unique A3D sounds. Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament were some of my most favorite games to play on the system, and since I always had SoundBlaster cards, I was curious to the option I was unable to enable in those games. You have good eyes, they are Pentium 3s to go with the motherboards, the one on the left only accepts up to 1.2Ghz the right can take the 1.4Ghz. I haven't decided which amongst all those parts would be best for a J-Win98SE machine.

>>7182590
I only remember it was Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix in those days for RAM. I believe they still exist to this day.

>>7182607
As with all hardware back then, there are pros and cons to choosing one over the other. The Voodoo card doesn't use AGP functions but can use that slot just fine. The Tseng is great for its 2D, but it will give issues with Commander Keen so maybe the Cirrus Logic would be better but slower all around.

It is an ATI x1950 graphics card for that Windows2k set I had. At that time, I had to settle for AMD and ATI because they were the only affordable options when you were broke. They don't match up to Intel and nVidia, but I was aiming for Windows 2000 and not a GNU/Linux elitist with the best hardware. I would have wanted one with Ruby on it, but I don't think they put her on any AGP cards, but the Palit one has a nice robust cooling solution but takes up 2 slots. At that point, AGP was being phased out, but I think the red goes well with the purple and black PCBs.

If you're not coming with a 31khz CRT don't come at all. The operating systems won't drive integer upscaling to high res displays, and any modern display is going to internally scale low resolution content terribly or just fail to show certain display modes. Period hardware couldn't run at 1440p/2160p natively. You could put an OLED on get there to get there with the contrast and latency but again, way overkill, nothing will run at its native resolution, and the scaling will still blow. All other flat panel monitors will just look like laggy, smeary, jaggy, stretchy, no-constrast shit.

Start looking for a CRT monitor. Just about any one will do. If you're lucky some boomer near you will be selling cheap and won't put the retro scalper jew premium on you.

Pentium III + a mobo with ISA slots if you want the best time for DOS and close enough to modern, thing is it'll suck shit to use for late 90s/early 2000s games and Windows in general and have pitiful IO performance. If you don't mind losing a bit of DOS compatibility get a P4 mobo with AGP (newest GPU you want is Geforce FX series) + SATA + USB 2.0. The lack of ISA will break some DOS sound support, no way around it, but it'll run just about everything and you can slow down the CPU too.

XP runs just fine all the way up until Intel Haswell with very few compatibility issues. Mostly you'll end up with problems depending on your choice of GPU. I'd recommend Nvidia. As for how old it could be? Not really worth making an AGP based XP machine anymore unless you really really want to. Just get a Core2Duo and any top of the line GeForce between the 8800 and 780Ti depending on how high you want your graphics settings.
98 is at its best on a Pentium 3 or earlier. As you approach the gigahertz barrier you'll start to get into your first compatibility issues. If you really want to play the most games you'll be limited to a Geforce 2, Voodoo 2 and a Pentium 3 550MHz. If you're willing to sacrifice compatibility then you can go faster all the way up to Tualatin Pentium 3. Athlon XP aren't really worth it as games that could use it usually like XP more.
Sound card is another thing as well. For 98 you probably want nice midi capabilities and DOS support but for XP you want EAX.
TL;DR Just build two machines. One for XP and one for 98. If you haven't upgraded your main PC since 2013 it could be just fine for XP though!

So on the upside the Voodoo 3 works properly. However I don't know if my games are configured wrong (I installed almost all of them with a TNT2 Vanta). The only game I could get running properly was Doom95 (which doesn't seem to run correctly on the TNT2). Every other game I tried (including a fresh install of Sonic R that I only installed for the first time with the Voodoo 3 installed) crapped itself when I attempted to start it. However going back to the TNT2 I experienced no issues and they ran like butter (presumably Doom95 wouldn't work right if I loaded that again).

So I'm a little stumped. I thought the Voodoo 3 was supposed to be better for compatibility than the competing cards of the era (and by all accounts the TNT2 IS the premiere competitor for this exact card so I'm playing with hardware precisely targeted for this era of gaming).

One, I'm not enjoying it anymore because all that took place literally almost 3 decades ago. It's literally yugely hard and these are thousands of aspies who spend every waking hour discussing every anal detail of it on shit like vogons. Being blissfully ignorant that so many combinations of hardware don't work together or with a few particular games doesn't make make it less hard. It just makes it easier for you to not care. And if you've never run into a problem then why should you. But it's still a massive clusterfuck.

Reminder that you don't need to buy a crazy expensive retro graphic card for your retro build. Just drop any Geforce MX card into your rig and call it a day. They're cheap as shit and will run just about any win9x game at 60fps just fine.

that's way overkill. That's more of an XP card.

And probably not as compatible with certain games due to the shitty 9x driver support. The further away you move from 2001, the further away from compatible you get.

You have to understand that anything with the GeForce/Radeon brand was skullfucking any game at the time. TnL support was just that OP when it came out.

A regular Geforce2 is basically on par with everybody's favorite meme card, the Voodoo5.

My "Ultimate" win9x card would probably be the Geforce2 Ultra. But just getting a regular GTS would be fine for everything already.

>that's way overkill. That's more of an XP card.
To some extent that's what I wanted when I built it. I intended this on being a 98/XP dual boot which I've done but I spend way more time in 98 than I do XP. Never had any driver issues though, I know the last Catalyst driver to support 98 only had beta support for the X800 but I've not run into any significant issues yet.

Because the most commonly used USB stick storage driver requires the unofficial service pack.

there's a few, very subtle differences how it runs on real hardware than how it's emulated. for example if a 3DFX game had slowdowns, it wouldn't drop frames to keep up the game speed, but would actually slow down the game while retaining framerate (not all games might do this, Screamer 2 in 3dfx mode certainly does)
another point is with older hardware you won't miss loading screens which often contained some art or game tips (when you emulate and load everything from SSD or a fast HDD, you often won't even notice there was a loading screen at all)

and then there's the novelty of just having some old device that still works.

I wonder how much 52 dollars was worth in Soviet Russia back in the 80s, honestly I wonder if it was expensive but I know not enough about economics to guess how much that is even in the USA. Probably things are five times more expensive now days due to inflation, but did Russia get inflation? Weren't computers more expensive back then anyway when newer? I wonder how cheap it really was.....I can't fathom it. I guess it was like 250 usd back when computers were usually shit while in the equivalent of thousands back then, unless it was something like the commador 64 I guess. Approximately 41 soviet roubles (according to official exchange rates) and 624 soviet roubles with unofficial exchange.
Just for reference, 100 roubles per month was a typical "middle class" salary.

Yeah, I'm not talking about the win98 AGP cards, they're actually still for the most part pretty reasonable. I'm taking about the very late ones that don't have win98 drivers, the ones that where released in the PCIe era and use a PCIe to AGP Bridging Chip like
