The first is definitely an underrated masterpiece. Yes the N64 version, zoomy cunts.
But it's just such a revelation of a video game that so fun to play and has such satisfying kills of dinos and hunters with truly engaging music and with real scares, that it's a surprise that it even got a remaster because it usually is forgotten.

Port of Adia is by a long shot the shortest, most straightforward level of the game. Only Death Marshes is also like that, but the other four levels are very long and convoluted, often involving multiple revisits to hubs, puzzles involving multiple floors, mazes that serve no purpose other than screwing with the player, underwater mazes with the same purpose, and so on, "memory" alone won't save you.

>> No.7183558

>It tried to be Half Life.

I will say I appreciated some of the things it tried to do differently (creating an early version of an independently acting world and having branching paths and implementing gadgets to be used in-game for non-violent ends), but the game was considerably shorter than 2, lacked a lot of the action of the previous two games, and like you said, was trying to copy the feeling of half-life with its sci-fi/horror narrative.

Looking back on it, it's cutscenes were actually pretty impressive at the time, seeing as the faces, eyes, lips, and facial features were all animated and expressive. I can't think of another game that did this off-hand, other than Deus Ex, and it was done far, far, FAR worse in Deus Ex (both voice acting and facial animation)

>i'm not engaging further with you on this or the your taking out of context the criticism of compromising frame rate for content etc, because you aren't worth talking to.
You just gave one reason and then redacted the previous reason and gave an entirely new reason. Which is it, am I not worth talking to or am I taking your criticism out of context, which I'm not, since I've been addressing all of them directly and forwardly which you refuse to reciprocate. I really want to imitate in my game how Turok 2 handles these blood and slime fountains/sprays from enemies, the way they trail and almost look like they clump/blend together despite being strings of separate particles.

Idiot. You still need a particle system to move your sprite billboards around.

I haven't looked further into it but I tried two approaches to emulate that look and still can't get it right. These are obviously more computational heavy than what's in the game from 1998. First one was a particle system driving real metaballs/isosurfaces that would allow attraction and blending of blood blobs, 2nd was a screen space method that works similar, but the calculations are lighter. Still relies on underlying particles.

Both didn't achieve the look I was after but it made nice looking blood that didn't fit in a retro FPS.

Dude, you need to collect feathers in each level to unlock a talisman that will unlock a talisman path in a different level. So there's mandatory backtracking. If you don't remember where the talisman station is you're going to be wandering around forever looking for it.

When you DO get the talismans you also had better remember where those little talisman usage spots were too cus you're going to be backtracking looking for those too. AND you have to find the switches to open the Nuke arenas on each level AND find the Primagen keys.

Turok 2 should be a great game but it's level design literally drags it down like 2 whole points for me.

Multiplayer-only game on Switch? Unlikely. I really would like Turok 3, though. I never played it, and it doesn't look that bad...

It's got bots for single player and could do local multiplayer.

Also would release on pc and consoles too. I don't think it'll happen, 3 neither but I do wish it would.

>and it doesn't look that bad...
It's the worst game in the series before the reboot. Even Evolution was better.

Now that sounds pretty bad, and I haven't played those. Some video review I recently watched were a little more favorable, though.

Honestly the only good thing about Turok 3 is the multiplayer, as it has some pretty neat game modes. But even then it's still not as good as Rage Wars, with worse weapons, maps, and playable characters; seriously, T3's playable characters in MP are awful.

So why do some people like it over 2 again?

I can't give you the answer to that, I don't know how such people think. 3 has worse gunplay, graphics, animations, gore, less interesting weapons, downgraded weapons from 2, etc. It has cutscenes with decent facial animations, so there's that I guess.

Hey now, Turok 3 is really cool. Let's not be jerks here.

Did Turok invent the Achievement system in vidya?

Exactly! Other than, you know, Jeff Spangenberg, the founder of both the company Iguana, and Retro Studios (responsible for making Metroid Prime).

Mmmm, no you're wrong about the graphics and animation part. The animation on Turok 3 is one of its highlights. Graphics are also a solid step up, with more varied textures and more detailed world geometry than Turok 2. That's where the compliments end though.

Even Turok 1 has better animations than 3.

>> No.7210239

>>7210231
Turok 1 has decent animation, but Turok 3 has far better animation by a long-shot, it's not even a competition, especially since it has real-time animation scripting which Turok 1 never had.

You don't have to restart the entire game if you kill one of them, just the level. The only thing saved permanently is if you collect their heads.
