What do you think of the 8bit Sonic games?

>> No.717579

Honestly I think Sonic SMS is the only good Sonic game.

Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 are great.

>> No.717590

All the 8 bit 2D platformer sonic games were pretty fun, except Sonic Blast which was just unplayable. Where there was an SMS version nearly identical to the GG version (1,2,Chaos) the SMS version was much less annoying (with the slightly bigger screen).

>> No.717593

They're not bad, but I would never play them over the 16-bit games.

Actually, the NGPC game is really great.

>> No.717656

They're decent. Wouldn't want to play them again, though; except maybe Triple Trouble.

Pocket Adventure was really good though.

>> No.717728

They were shit.

But that can be justified, given how they were running on inferior hardware.
The GameGear Sonics were nearly unplayable given the lesser resolution and tiny screen, which gave you way less space to move and react before crashing against an enemy or falling on a pit if you were running too fast.

>> No.717740

All very bad with weird jumping physics that ruin the games for me. The weird level design and the limited screen don't help things either. Never understood how Sonic Triple Trouble could get as popular as it is when it plays like something off of Action 52.

Sonic Triple Trouble is the only one I could really stand. It actually stands with the 16-bit games fairly well, and it had NACK THE FUCKING WEASEL. Honestly, it really could have been Sonic 4 or something if it had a 16-bit remake.

What was up with that part in the SMS Sonic 2 (I think) where Robotnik saves you from falling into that pit of lava? Then he tries to kill you and fails miserably. That was kind of retarded.

>> No.717903

I love 2 on the SMS. It was my first Sonic and one of the first games I ever owned/beat (SMS was my first console). I can't speak on the others though as I still haven't played them but I've never heard anything bad.

Yes, one of the things I regret about modern Sonic. No varied rogue's gallery. It's Eggman and more Eggman. Not even a rival who stays evil for more than a game.

Yeah, the Game Gear games started to get a good thing going in that respect. Fang/Nack made for a fucking great comic relief type villain, and then you had pic related as a decent alternative to Eggman.

>> No.718357

>> No.718362

I had a Game Gear for a year or two before I had a Genesis.
I had Sonic 2 GG and I mastered that shit having no idea that the Genesis Sonic games were nothing like it at all. I still like it but I can see how its a tad odd to people who had the 16-bit ones first

A Game Gear was my first home console. I grew up with 8-bit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and loved the hell out of it.

In retrospect that game was massive bullshit, of course, but the game still holds a place in my heart. Probably what gave me my love of older video game music.

There are antlions in tons of games.

I think FF9, Legend of Mana maybe, in a Megaman X game I believe, and I just woke up so my mind is dizzy but I'm sure I fought quite a lot of those in games.

It had it's faults, but I actually really enjoyed it. It's a shame they didn't keep doing side games like this with Tails, with a little polishing it probably could've evolved into a solid series.

I beat IWBTG on very hard, Castlevania for nes without cheating, and mega man 1-3 and x, and I still throw an attempt at sonic 2 once in a while... that game is fucking hard, and I love it. I hope I can beat it someday. For now I haven't gotten past the boss of Sky High Zone(Which I like the name of)

People that say it's unfair because of the screen size just don't get it.

I like them. I remember my friend had a master system and as a kid I always wondered why his Sonic games looked weird.
also dat Bridge Zone music
also does sonic Pocket Adventure fit in the 8 bit bracket? It's awesome. A way better mashup than Sonic 4.

You'll be able to do it. I can't even do Contra without cheating and I've beaten it. Maybe play the Master System version before the Game Gear

they unintentionally made that the hardest part of the game when they shrunk the screen to fit on GG

>> No.720752

I owned a master system and had sonic. It was good but alex kidd was better.

The problem is I played the mega drive version before so some things bothered me like the power up effects, dropping only 1 ring when hit, and when you killed enemies they didn't become critters.

>> No.720775

>>720697

Actually there's more to it than that. I've beaten both the SMS and the GG versions. The iron balls in the SMS version always move in th same pattern: a low bouncing arc. But in the GG version the balls can bounce in any one of six patterns, from very long bounds to very high but short bounces. The GG version is a lot harder because not only are the patterns random, but with the smaller screen size you have less time to react.

Sonic Triple Trouble is actually my favourite handheld Sonic and honestly stands up to the Genesis versions in my opinion.

Honestly, I enjoyed it just fine on Game Gear. Even taking into account the limited screen space. I beat it just fine. Although it was the only game I owned for it at first, so I pretty much had to stick to it.
