Everyone talks about the classic and X series. What's the verdict on the Game Boy series?

>> No.7165490

fuckin sucks

>> No.7165494

The graphics and music are top notch. Gameplay is pretty simplistic though. I had 4 as a kid, but never beat it until later. Wish I still had the cartridge, I think I lost it when I moved. Sucks because I'm sure as hell not buying another one.

5 was great, and so were the Xtreme titles.

Extreme 2 has better versions of X2 tracks than X2 does.

Now that the dust has settled, I think that we can agree they’re, dare I say it, the quintessential scot-adjacent wilyvanialikes.

Gimped semi-ports of the NES games with rearranged stages, messed-up physics, and a cramped screen. MMWorld 5 gets some credit for being an original MM game and not just rolling two NES games into one.

The Xtreme games are just a mess.

I always wanted a megaman gameboy game as a kid but all I got was the tiger handheld

Pretty good for handhelds and the music is better than the NES versions (except in 2 obviously).

3 and 4, are nice, 5 is really damn good.
I loved the Xtreme titles.

>> No.7167891

IV and V were amazing. III was pretty good. Wily’s Revenge was alright. II was mediocre. Haven’t played the Xtreme games.

>> No.7167932

IV and V are two of my favorite Classic games. They’re genuinely great, especially V.
I-III are akippable, IMO. But you could give them a try, I guess.

>> No.7169174

1, 3, 4, and 5 were all made by Minakuchi Engineering. 2 was made by a different development house.

I actually half-like the music in 2. They're all original compositions, not remixes. The new melodies are pretty cool but I hate the instruments.

I enjoyed them all. Dr. Wily's Revenge is the best of the original 3. It's short and simple, but enjoyable if you like the NES games. II was developed by a different company and it shows, the level design is not as good and some sections are too similar to their NES counterparts, but it's an alright game. III is my least favorite, there's a lot of annoying amateurish design flaws like stages with pixel-perfect jumps and spikes everywhere. IV has a notable amount of polish and was the best one until V rolled along. V is the obvious fan favorite, it has completely original bosses and stages and it's honestly on par with the NES games. They're all worth playing if you like Mega Man, they probably wouldn't convert a casual fan into a diehard though.

The Xtreme games are also alright but I don't like them as much as the console entries.

1, 3, 4, and 5 were all done by Minakuchi. X3 too.

I know, that's why I said II was by a different company. I should have made that more clear though. I think Minakuchi also did some work on Wily Wars, but I could be wrong there.

>I is an ok first adventure - only the MM1 robot masters get full stages with new gimmicks and the rest are relegated to only boss fights. The rearranged music does not do the NES versions justice imo. I'm glad that this encouraged Inafune to collaborate with other companies to work on the series. The new stuff by Toru Odasa and Makoto Tomozawa is good, if a bit light-hearted. It won't hurt to play this one.

>II is controversial - most would say that the gameplay and music are terrible but that doesn't resonate with me. The levels more resemble their NES counterparts, but they aren't 100% carbon copies. The soundtrack is entirely original, composed by Kenji Yamazaki, and is really good if you get over the sound. I'd even say the title music of this game is one of the best tracks in the entire classic series. There's a rom hack on romhacking.net that fixes the high-pitched music, I honestly didn't mind it. You can't say the sound driver sucks when Wily's Revenge actually shits itself in the Wily Stages. It also has the best plot of the first 4. One nitpick is there is no Wily Eyebrow Taunt. Still better than I for me.

>III is when it starts getting good - and I recommend starting here, both for the game itself and the asking price, its a good balance in price between the cheap I and II and the unobtainable IV and V. Many additional gimmicks are found here and I think they work well. Kouji Murata becomes the handheld's composer from here on out, and he really knows how to use the GB hardware to make rival-worthy arrangements of the NES tunes as well as original ones. I think out of all of the GB games, this one definitely has the most BS moments. If you want a Mega Man NES game on GB, pick this one.

>> No.7173490

>IV is extremely bold with its presentation - Many liberties are taken in this installment including new collectibles which are needed for the final stage. This was the first game in the series to introduce the shop found in later games both handheld and console. And as far as I know, this is the only game on GB to have Ninja Gaiden like cutscenes but with no dialogue, and they work wonders to tell the story. This is a bit text heavy though. If you want a handheld Mega Man game like no other, pick this one.

>V stands on its own as one of the best in the entire classic series - and this one definitely has the most bang for its buck. Completely new robot masters and new stages will delight you the entire way through. Even though there is only one Wily stage, it really plays out cinematically, and takes up about a third of the game. Ever since the Super Mario Land games got properly DXed for the GBC, I've been trying to get this game to that same level, but no luck yet. If you want a clean slate to impress for a Mega Man game, pick this one.

>Never played the Xtremes, but a good thing to note is that they were developed by Capcom themselves, unlike the handheld series

Each of these are all available for $5 each on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Have fun!

>Spark Man
As good as the original, possibly better.
>Snake Man
Lacks the faux reverb of the NES version, but has a harder, driving baseline. Very cool.
>Elec Man
Lol no. The arpeggios and the slower tempo make for a nice remix, but they threw out half the song and replaced it with something that isn't nearly as catchy.

>>7165479
Imo, 1 and 2 are OK, probably the worst megaman games I've played through, 3 and 4 are pretty OK, and 5 is actually really cool. It sucks that they ended right as they found their own footing with the stardroids and shit in 5

>Ever since the Super Mario Land games got properly DXed for the GBC, I've been trying to get this game to that same level, but no luck yet.
That would be freaking amazing. And GBC's faster CPU would give the opportunity to eliminate some of the slowdown that plagues these games.
