7162578 No.7162578 [Reply] [Original]

I'm playing this for the first time ever and I'm having a blast. I'm a 35 years old pc gamer who always looked down on the n64 for its awful graphics and even worse controller but once you give this game a chance it will suck you in. Its funny but this game seems more 3d than modern games. I think its because of the camera work that was thought after, you go up a slope and you notice it because of the camera. Maybe it also feels more 3d because of simple geometric shapes? I really don't know but this is a great game and the only problem I have is the camera like when a bolder rolls behind me and I can't see it or other annoying stuff like that. I also can't still quite figure out how to select the slingshot and attack without being in first person view and why is first person inverted anyway. I'm really having fun here and it has been ages since I enjoyed a game like this, I've been unfair to the n64 all those years. Always loved 2d Pixel art and hated the n64 for "killing" it like 2d (which aged like fine vine) had to get replaced by 3d (which already looked bad back then but now I can ignore it and just enjoy the game).

>> No.7162583

It just goes to show: good game design doesn't age.

>> No.7162593

A friend of mine had a similar reaction to you once he played OOT. He was a "master race" (before the master race meme even existed) who looked down upon consoles, but when he was able to emulate N64 and played OOT, he was blown away, to the point of saying things like "I can see why they say it's the best game of all time".
It's nice that people can stop being system warriors for a second and actually enjoy games.

It really is great. I'm not a huge fan of the 5th gen and I think most of the games from it haven't aged well, but OOT easily stands the test of time. The dungeon designs especially. They're huge and intricate, even by modern standards, and all have a unique vibe to them. To this day I don't think I've played a game with better designed dungeons. The soundtrack as well. What the game lacks in graphics, it makes up with an amazing soundtrack that sets the atmosphere perfectly for each area.

I remember my first time playing N64, It was 2007 and one of my friends was giving away her stuff because "she didn't need it anymore", I got her N64, booted up good ol' Super Mario, and wow.

>He was a "master race" (before the master race meme even existed

Yes that's totally me. My first console ever was the 360 and that's because it could play my pc games but less buggy. No joke for some reason I could not progress in the scare crow part in batman a bug prevented me from doing it, 360 version just worked fine.

Also I love Pixel art and the first gen of 3d consoles is still something I look down on. Those wobbly textures of the ps1 just disgust me. I bet I have missed out on a lot of great games because I have avoided the ps1 but are they really still playable? I mean I had Tomb Raider on PC, the tank controls of resident evil are just awful and sure call it a filter but have those people played and beaten the alone in the dark games? This is what I've played as a pc gamer.

Also is it really the best game of all time? It's impressive how zelda ALWAYS pulls that off. Zelda on the NES is a classic and master piece (2 is a stinker. Is there a rom hack that makes it suck less? I admire that they tried something different for once though), zelda on the snes is one of the best snes games, I had a game boy and boy did I love zelda on the game boy and zelda on the n64 is yet another master piece and botw is the reason why the switch sold. Wow oh and I forgot twilight princess made people buy the wii, I never got into that one, I've tried but it just annoyed me. Maybe I will realize that it's actually a good game too one day.
Really how does the zelda series do it?

OOT 3D is good, don't listen to the anons who post the collage with comparison pics. Yes some lighting is changed and in some ways the original can have more charm, but you can perfectly like both. I liked the new look of the remake, not too different to the original, but more detailed. The gyroscope and the touch menu are godsend QoL additions. Enjoy!

What does that mean?
I also have a hacked 3ds but I want to enjoy it on the big screen with the wonderful gamecube controller which is really comfy. Experience the original deal. Not saying the remaster is bad would welcome it on the switch but I just don't want to stare down at a tiny screen. Makes my neck hurt after a while, I have the same problem with books unfortunately. This should not be the case. If it is your game is bugged. You start at whatever entrance through which you entered the area you saved in. So the beginning of the dungeon if you're in one, or the entrance to the town if you're in a town. The only reason you should spawn at your house is if you saved in Kokiri Forest.

You can just emulate it. The worst part about the 3DS version is the laziness in recreating some of the cutscenes IMO. I also prefer the look of the prerendered backgrounds in the N64 version, but that's just me.

An actual N64? Fuck no. But emulating the N64 version is worth it. You can even emulate the Zelda Collector's Edition verison in Dolphin if you don't want to deal with shitty N64 emulators. The 3DS version is mostly fine, but I do think there's something to be said for playing on a bigger, higher res screen. The resolution on a 3DS is actually worse than the resolution the original ran at.

Oh, my mistake then. I've never played anything on a real N64. My first playthrough of OOT as a kid was on Gamecube and I definitely remember it looking better than the 3DS version resolution wise. Of course if you play in an emulator you can crank the res as high as you want. Actually, can you do that on the GC version since you're emulating a Gamecube emulating an N64? If not then an N64 emulator might be the way to go.

MM3D actually makes gameplay changes.
In the original, there were multiple ways to kill the bosses. In the 3DS remake all bosses have giant eyes and you generally need to use a specific item to damage those eyes.
Zora swimming was slowed down.
Deku water skipping now has weird momentum.
Ice arrows no longer freeze water anywhere, only in predetermined glowing spots.

The biggest issue for me is Zora swimming. Swimming in the great bay in the original is fun, it felt like controlling a dolphin.

No that's not true. I was a pc gamer. Friends had all the consoles. I remember when golden eye came out and everyone was so excited about it. I tried it and laughed my ass off
>wtf is this? Babies first FPS

With someone coming from pc I was used to FPS and I thought popular golden eye was awful.
I also played some zelda when it came out at a friend's and it didn't tickle me fancy. I also tried it several times over the years but the graphics are just fucking hideous. The beginning where the bolder rolls around and you can't see it because of the shitty camera often made me quit.
So trust me I have played n64 the day it got released here and tried it several times over the years but other than Doom 64 I didn't really like that thing especially because of that awful controller I still hate with a passion. Playing it with a gamecube controller already fixes some stuff. So no I never ignored the n64.

IDK what you're smoking, but MM3D's art is WAY worse than the original. Look up any comparison shot and the demaster has way worse lighting. Usually much brighter and completely loses the atmospheric lighting of the original. Pic related is a good example, but not cherry picked by any means. Just Google "Majora's Mask 3D comparison" and you will see it's the same in every level. It's actually hard to find a comparison shot where the downgrade ISN'T noticeable. OOT has this problem too, but to a much lesser extent.

It's absolutely not and the vast majority of places have much improved lighting and environmental detail.

I don't see how you could say this isn't superior.

https://imgur.com/t/ranch/J4reak3

>OOT has this problem too, but to a much lesser extent.
There are a few over-saturated areas, but this is much less of a problem in MM3D compared to OoT3D, where most of the most important areas and scenes are screwed up in some way.

You don't even really need graphics comparisons to say as to why MM3D isn't as good. They totally ruined some of the mask powers, most notably the Zora swimming. It used to be fun using each mask for various means of getting around, it was made totally no-fun-allowed in the remake
