I don't know about best ever but I have a shit load of fondness for it. Last time I replayed it about two or three years ago it still held up MOSTLY well but I'll never play it on hard mode again. Too much HP bloat on everything.

I never understood this criticism. Was Xen the best part of the game? no, but it was definitely playable and dare I say enjoyable.

the criticism comes from people saying it drastically altered the pace of the game, which might be true but you're also on a completely alien planet and basically learning how to adapt to the new environment so it had to be a bit slow until the player is more comfortable. I really don't see how this is a bad design choice or even an overlooked one.

the meme comes from Black Mesa team being too lazy to remake it so they just said "yeah it's shit, we're doing our own version!" as far as I can tell

no disrespect intended but while I really liked bioshock the first playthrough, I thought it was really bad when I tried to play it again a few years ago. The twist, while being pretty great for the day, just ruins the storytelling once you've already experienced it.
Like it's fun but the only replayability is from the RPG elements, which is sort of an outsider in the FPS genre.

Also have you played Morrowind or Oblivion?? I really don't get why people like Skyrim more than any previous Elder Scrolls.

and yes, I played them in order as they came out. I don't like morrowind. Oblivion is aesthetically goat, but mechanically garbage. Skyrim is kinda more shallow in some ways, but it just doesn't really matter.

Skyrim is reddit - the game last time I checked. Might have to do with the explosion of rage comics and "le arrow to le knee" meme but I just cringe so hard every time I play it.
But getting past that, the game absolutely ruined the mechanics. I'll admit it's much prettier in the skill tree - that shit always gives me goosebumps - but the entire game is so greyed out and bland.
And that's not to mention how the main quest is very uninteresting and they basically ruined the dark brotherhood/theives guild/fighter guild quests.
I just don't see how anyone would think it's better than Morrowind or even Oblivion unless they were blinded by nostalgia or very young and don't like /vr/

But hey to each his own. Oblivion will always be THE elder scrolls for me and when it came out Morrowind fans said it was too watered down and lacking in substance so it makes sense how every one that comes out just gets that much hate from fans of the previous... lol
