Doomkid and Decino are good Doom video makers, other people have done good longform videos on FPS not unlike Civvie but without the specific playthrough style like The Examined Life of Gaming's Marathon trilogy reviews, Errant Signal's still ongoing Children of Doom series (about different speicifc FPS before and after Doom in each episode), Psycho Eyeball did a really good Civvie style video on the bonker Rise of the Triad expansion, Extreme Rise of the Triad. Also DF Retros videos on FPS are top notch, particularly their doc on Powerslave/Exhumed

Quake. id really nailed that gothic mix of medieval and technology. I adore this setting so much, but much of that adoration is thanks in part to mods, and the expansion packs, I must admit. But like Doom, the original maps' setting was abstract enough that you can make any sort of map and mod and it's still genuinely "Quake", which is just great to me because it feels like a singular "canon" if you will. Like there's this whole never ending dimension of Shub-Niggurath's scattered forces, and the Ranger is going from map to map, mod to mod just trying to get home, but they'll kill him if he doesn't kill them. I don't quite know how to describe what I mean here, but if you get it, hell yeah.

Just finished Lycanthorn II, here's my thoughts:
The different characters are a fun gimmick, I liked how you had to use your new party member's special ability to access the next area but I wish there were more moments that called for that, like secrets you could find with bombs or Wrath's jump.
All of the enemies look cool but mechanically most of them feel really generic.
Bosses were visually cool, especially the final boss, but they were all pushovers difficulty-wise.
Overall I give it werewolf milkers/10, looking forward to Vomitorium.

Valiant map31 is really good. Maybe its length makes it stand out compared to the short Scythe-like maps of episodes 1 or 2. The map isn't difficult to navigate although it is more cryptic than the other maps so it's not a good example of how good skillsaw is at conveying where to go next, but it's a good example of Valiant's combat (although it IS a slaughtermap): lots of rockets, shells, health, armor, and most of all, lots of enemies. There also is an unforgettable platforming section where your jumping onto a platform triggers the next platform to lower, but each platform you land on contains progressively more and tougher enemies, and each next step also opens monster closets with cacoclouds, with a climactic final fight while you scramble to get off. Your given an invulnerability beforehand but it doesn't last all the way through.

It's a three level set, using a custom palette so as to use properly colored Quake textures, and it looks pretty fucking sick. It's also, as the text file suggests, FUCKING hard. The first level really starves you on good ammo at first, and you kind of just have to use the Cyberdemon in the center to destroy at least some enemies for you, which I love. Then you get to fight with rockets and more rockets.

I realize also that I need to put some sort of delay or something on the Cyberdemon exploding violently, because without an Invulnerability Sphere, telefragging him takes out both of you.

Fuck it. Threw this together a couple nights ago.

A Revenant trapped in the yellow outlined zone derps around, once it reaches the end of the hall it will trigger a spawn and then teleport to another cell and repeat. The spawned monsters in the small sector below will wander into one of two teleporters that are linked to the other 8 teleporters, effectively creating an infinite "random" spawn machine. 6 in the front and 2 "flanks"

The action sectors above are conveyor belts at varying lengths using Voodoo dolls to spawn in heath, with a three second countdown with yellow bars to left of the player.

Below are belts that spawn in armor or ammo also visible with a three 3 second countdown with blue bars. The very bottom belt will spawn in an explosive barrel randomly that will travel behind the monsters on the green belt in front of the bone zone.

Basically its an arcade shooting gallery/aim trainer thing. So far my record is like 600 something kills with a high damage mod on.

Was contemplating a "wild card" system using voodoo dolls to randomly lower/raise variable cover, turn on/off lights or throw a random upper level monster at the player

Replacing all of the enemies is much harder than replacing say the SS soldier, and besides, there isn't much of a need to replace everything, like the imp, for example. I don't think the Eviternity enemies clashed at all, either.

Speaking of custom enemies, the coolest custom enemies I've seen so far are: the turquoises cyberdemon from Magnolia (has 1000hp, same as baron), the grey imp from Hell Ground (has same hp as pinky, moves much faster, throws baron fireballs), Eviternity's cybruiser, and pretty much everything in Valiant: super imp, super demon, super mancubus, pyroknight, and arachnorb-spawning arachnotron. I wish I could just copy/paste the correct dehacked code and use the monsters in my own custom maps.

Stardoom from '95 (idgames/themes/starwars/stardoom). Apparently a full 2 episodes but I only felt like playing the first map. This was the "Death Star Reactor" level that is the best part of any shovelware compilation. It is massive and well detailed with great architecture, definitely on par with Romero's finest in terms of visuals. None of the keycard doors are marked which can fuck right off. They ran through all their ammunition stockpiles on Poland alone and suffered an increasingly bad shortage afterwards, they were in a really bad shortage of arms and ammunition that they would capture and field as many enemy small arms and small arms production as they possibly could.
Manpower was in constant shortage, and one of Hitler's blunders was issuing WAY more stand or die orders than useful, leading to deaths and captures of soldiers who instead could have retreated and fought another day.
Then we have the economical side, where Nazi Germany fell for the Autarky meme, and the economy couldn't hold itself together without robbing selected domestic demographics and plundering conquered areas for resources to bring home.
You also have things like Germany's nuclear weapon's program being a complete joke because much of the necessary science was dismissed as 'jew science' and useful scientists fleeing the country left them high and dry on that part.

There is no reality in the multiverse where Nazi Germany manages to not fall apart in one way or another before the 1950s, and certainly not one where they manage to stage a functional land invasion in North America.

On Soviet Russia, they were strongly dependent on the US, more than half ammunition they were using was produced in America via the Lend-Lease, and much of the food needed to feed troops came there as well. The Red Army was incidentally also in a horrible state early on, due to Stalin purging leadership, which was why their attack on Finland was initially such an insane meatgrinder for them.

Those could work, though I figure that to make the alt-history angle work, B.J killing Stalin would happen after Germany and Japan's defeat, with Allies collectively turning on the Soviet Union (which may not have been particularly likely to happen, but there was a popular sentiment that they were actually an enemy, which you can build from with goofy and cartoony fiction like Wolfenstein 3D).

Or hell, you can just have B.J going rogue after WW2 and going after Joseph Stalin as revenge for Poland, the Red Army carried out many atrocities there and you can easily have a plot point of him avenging cruely murdered family members.
If you set it just after WW2, a year or so, you can add a couple of neat weapons and stuff from the immediate post war era, like early Kalashnikovs; machined receivers, MP40/PPS43 style underfolding stocks, no muzzlebrakes, overbuilt and expensive.

Stalin could be driving a heavy tank or something for his fight, which you'd need shaped charge grenades/warheads to defeat, then he disembarks to fight you with dual PKs or RPDs or something.

Basically it's a big tube with adjoining rooms. You have to find all the keys to get into the Art Museum which contains many of Boris Valleho's works of art

interesting "aesthetic" if you can call it that. Kind of a mind fuck using lots of triggers with awkward lifts and random teleporters. Had a slight hint of "national treasure" vibe. (VERY slight)
Unfortunately it was really cramped and ruined with an irritating elevator in the center. Had an interesting fight with a CD in the pitch black and you could only see if grabbed the god sphere. If it were polished it would awesome IMO

Yeah I personally find a lot of video game self awareness to be poorly executed in most cases. The artstyle in Eternal reminded me a lot of that weird Gears of War aesthetic. The music in 2016 was better, and I enjoyed the simplicity of 2016. Eternal has that sequelitis issue where they felt like they needed to expand the gameplay vertically rather than just making something similar to Doom 2, which was a new campaign with new demons and a new gun. I dunno. I always felt overwhelmed when playing Eternal not because of the enemy count but because of all the mechanics you make use of.

i feel like a lot of eternals' decisions were meant to fix problems of 2016 but felt like overcompensation or creating new problems
it rolls itself in duct tape
a peeve of mine is within enemies sharing mostly similar attacks and it could be a variety of reasons
from being faster and smarter than their doom 2 counterparts, to the arena combat limiting varied enemy encounters, as opposed to blending naturally in level design
when even the mancubus can't shoot the double big fireball pattern anymore, it feels like something is wrong
even the new blood maykr felt like we're close to a breaking point
it makes if wonder if the "doom dance" restricts potential enemy variety of it's just the developers not being creative enough, wanting you to "feel powerful" or even the detailed models being too much to render
