Imagine savestating yourself through a game of chess, think about it. you make a move, cpu makes a better move.
eventually you reach the end "I BEAT IT!"

Hmmmm, no you didn't. you beat it just the same as someone watching a longplay on youtube.

False. There's no asterisk. A game can be beaten with save states. Otherwise Sega and Nintendo would not implement them in their mini consoles. Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars would also not have save states. Heck even the Playstation would not have save states if you were meant to play their games without saving.

i agree with everyone else that you didnt truly beat the game. But i do agree with the personal satisfaction of getting to the end with the assistance of save-states. I will tell you guys that i beat Battletoads, but not without saying Rat Race, slidey snakes and that cart rail levels were hard as fuck and i hate them. i dont see how i can get gud if im following proper instructions or button strategies. and i dont understand how anyone else can.

Which means he didn't beat it, because the whole idea is you put in effort to beat something. hence the beating part.

Honestly I don't mind if they say they beat the game but they should note they used save states since their perspective will obviously be different from somebody who beat it legitimately. I don't really understand the appeal of save state spamming though honestly, 100% of the time it's much more fun and satisfying to properly master a game imo. In fact
>>7145317
Bro the game isn't that hard I really do recommend giving it a proper go this time. Save states for a practice run or two are cool (hell shmup players use them as practice checkpoints for example) but Adventures of Batman & Robin is such a well-designed game to master it just seems like a shame if you stop there.

Beating the game is legitimate with savestates. It doesn't matter how the game is beat, as long as you've beat it fair & square. Now if beating the game without savestates is the only "legitimate" way to win, then using a Game Genie & Game Shark to beat a game would be considered "legitimate" because you didn't use save states.

>> No.7146897

>>7146880

Again I bring up the Chess game example, you did not beat the game as it was intended.
imagine sitting in a real life chess tournament, and everytime the other player makes a good movie you call for a repeat, then at the end you had 9000 repeats and you won.
do you think they'd give you the price?

No, because its not a legit win.

You reached the end, nothing more.

>> No.7146983

>>7146897
That doesn't make the cheat devices a less legitimate way to win. Because even Chess, if there's a way to cheat, you could fuck up so many times & still win. Would it be legit? According to your flawed logic, yes.

>>7146916
Because cheating is never legit. Winning fair & square is legit, savestates or not. Let me put this in an election example...

Let's say the votes were counted legitimately by either paper ballots(no savestates) or voting machines(savestates). Those votes(wins) would still count.

Now lets say a candidate cheated by voter fraud via "glitches"(game genie) or "mail-in"(game shark) ballots, with many of the votes not being legal because of turning Republican votes into Democrat votes(or vice versa) via "glitch"(according to Dominion) or you got more voters than registered voters, as well as dead people voting. Then the votes are not legitimate. The candidate who cheated didn't win legitimately.

Now do you get it?

You cheated not only the game, but yourself. You didn't grow. You didn't improve. You took a shortcut and gained nothing. You experienced a hollow victory. Nothing was risked and nothing was gained. It's sad that you don't know the difference.

SOR1? Whatever I guess. Definitely give SOR2 a proper go though when you can, very fun to master.
>>7146880
Hairsplitting. Obviously I meant playing the game without save states is more satisfying and that your perspective will be less valid than somebody who beat it without savestates as originally intended. The difference between something like Deus Ex and Super Mario Bros 3 is that the former was always released with quicksaving and loading as the developer's vision while only rereleases of the latter added that feature as a casualized mechanic and it was balanced around mastering the game without those crutches.

Wtf? Just pick the chick and play on normal. You don't need save states unless you're retarded. After beating the game once, it'll be easier with the other characters.

>> No.7148373

>>7148337
Some people don't want to beat a game all in one sitting. Sometimes people want to take a break, play it later. For example when you're in the middle of a game, your wife cooks you a meal and serves you. You are left with no choice but to turn off the game because there's no way to save it. Now with a savestate, you can pick up where you left off. Or you can enter a level skip code to pick up where you left off. Or you can use a cheat device to select the level you want to continue where you left off. A safe state doesn't necessarily invalidate a win. Neither does entering a code to pick up where you left off. It's always satisfying to win, with or without savestates. It's no different from beating a game with multiple lives and continues you've earned.

I like using save states for things like suspending my session or not having to fill in passwords for example, my point was more about the fact spamming save states every 2 seconds to beat a game or using them to erase difficulty just isn't the same experience as playing the game the way it was originally designed at all.
I used to spam save states for classic games as a kid but going back and playing them properly really rekindled my love for them since I was actually mastering the mechanics rather than just passing by parts of the games.

except when the nearest checkpoint is 40 minutes away. All that goddamn backtracking made me sick of HK, I'm not a nostalgiaboomer but it's astounding that old Metroid games got it right while modern, highly praised games have this bullshit for an artificial challenge.
Using save states also isn't bad when you're a busy man and want to decide when to stop playing. For example in some games like MM you have to find an owl statue or some shit to save. I used save state to quit the game and go about my day, this is very different from savescumming
