How do you feel about the transition of adventure game series from 2D to 3D? What are the best and worst cases?

Zelda stuck the transition really well from ALTTP to OOT. It retained the series' defining features while innovating in a revolutionary way. Final Fantasy, on the other hand, didn't make use of 3D at all. FFVII was basically just a 2D game with 3D graphics. The gameplay remained essentially unchanged.

Not the type of adventure games I was talking about, but thanks for contributing anyways.

In general, I'm not a fan of 3D adventures.
I liked GK3 more than an average guy.
Dreamfall was OK and I enjoyed seeing Arcadia in 3D, but it just wasn't the thing I wanted from a sequel.
Simon the Sorcerer 3 was a piece of shit, I'm glad that some glitches prevented me from playing much.
Broken Sword 3 was a major disappointment, fuck those crates.

There are also good examples, but maybe not retro, like Sam & Max seasons.

I disliked it, but I'm a snob for high quality 2D art. The early era of 3d seemed too stale for me and the basic environments and models removed a lot of the atmosphere that I enjoyed.

As they've gotten better over the years I'm fine with it, but the early 3d period is just too ugly for me.

Bad most of the time.
An example of 2d to 3d which works is simon the sorcerer 1 and 2, and the 3d simon the sorcerer 5.

If you count the Hexen games as adventures, i prefer Hexen 2 over the original 2d sprite based game.

if the 3D games were sequels to previous 2D games usually lost a lot of charm: Monkey Island or Sam & Max come to mind.

This is the only reason Zelda and jarpigs are considered masterpieces. Their console owners were never aware of true adventures and RPGs.

A disaster. The transition from 2D to 3D was a nightmare to me. I just wanted to play cartoony games. Still do.

Remember Stupid Invaders? Such a garbage game.

Its a bitter-sweet thing they never made that 3D LSL8. I would have loved another game but LSL in 3D would have been as bad of an idea as when they tested out doing a game in FMV

Well Zelda is an Action Adventure, so it went with an adventure base then added more combat and action elements.
