So today I played Parallel Dimension, a wad from 1998. I had played this as a kid, and liked it then, but then had pretty much forgotten it for years, since it was never mentioned in Ten Years Of Doom. Back in the day it was one of those wads whose website was hosted by Doomworld. It was also one of the first wads (if not the first) to demonstrate the Boom engine and what was possible with it. The wad itself is replacement to second episode of Ultimate Doom, but holy fuck it is challenging. A bit unfair even at times. It doesn't have the modern fun challenge, but the old fuck you challenge from the trying times. Nonetheless it's still a good wad, and a classic. It should have deserved a cacoward, being an unique gem and notable Boom wad.

Dog Mode appears as a flashing bone in a capsule. When picked up, you turn into a dog. This is a good thing, as you become invincible, can maul enemies to death by jumping on and biting them at the same time, shoot a powerful shockwave called the BarkBlast, and go into areas that would otherwise be impossible to enter. Dog Mode lasts 30 seconds.

In order to use the BarkBlast, you need to hold down the fire key for a few seconds. After a few seconds, a shockwave will automatically be released. While the key is being held down, you’ll hear barking that starts out slow, but quickly becomes fast. The faster the bark is, the closer it’ll be until the BarkBlast is released.

Areas that can only be accessed as a dog are marked with a wall that has a small opening at the bottom.

Dog Mode only appears in the registered version of the game, Dark War.

I'll do one.

https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/g-i/gothic

A 2004 level called just Gothic. It's a simple and straightforward enough level, though it's dark as fuck, so I'm glad I have a flashlight. Just plays D_RUNNIN by default, so I just IDCLEV'd 28, which ended up feeling suitable in mood, made the level a little spookier.

There's not a lot to say about it, but it does give you reasonable amounts of health (actually, too much health, given that you can get a Megasphere soon after you can get a Soulsphere), while keeping you on a tight leash for ammo.

Encountered this on an elevator. I tried fiddling with my graphics a bunch, but it stayed put. I'm not sure what it is, I'll have to go poke into the .wad and see if there's something fucked up with the BSP tree or something, but it doesn't look like anything that happens when that's broken, from my experience. The sector was fine functionally.

I really hope it's not indicative of a hardware problem.

The ammo starvation would seem to be pretty deliberate, as to make you get into a Berserk boxing match with an arch-vile at the end. Not much else to say, but it wasn't bad.

Is Shadow Warrior harder than Duke3d and Blood? I'm trying it for the first time and getting my ass handed to me even on second difficulty level.
Could be that douk&blood are only easy for me because i grew up playing them and i know how they work and what to expect? But mind you, i never played Doom and Quake1 as a kid, yet i was able to just pick em up and play recently without problems on uv and nightmare respectively.

The exit is in front of you, you search the maez for the key. Im sorry for not releasing a doom level for a long time because of problems in thailand with people with guns and I now have a new computer because my old computer broke down early in year and I had to save one and got a new computer for 2000 baht and has nice black speakers with a wicked subwoofer good for techno. But anyway I hope you enjoy this scary level its scary like that ghost forest wad made by some guy. Of the main build games, I actually like Duke the least. Not even anything against it, since it still feels great, but for some reason even the things that piss me off to no end in Blood and SW (and even Ion Maiden, for that matter) don't detract enough to take away from what they do really well. Duke is solid, but I feel a lot less "just one more level" from it compared to the others, if that makes sense.

They also have a lot of sharp verticality at times, which is something that I feel is bad in Build games. Take Blood for example: Most of the time there is a height difference, you can usually address it from distance as well, making much less situations where you need to sharply aim up or down. Since sprite bilboarding makes the sprites poorly represent the actors collision box when warped on vertices, this makes gunplay feel much more accurate. Even with enemies like gargoyles, they (eventually) come down to your level to fight: They never throw their bones downward or anything that would force you to fight them at a sharp vertical difference.

I tend to use the jetpack a lot just for trying to match height in gunplay vs some enemies. Duke really wanted to show off how much more vertical it could be compared to Wolf/Doom/everything before it, but Blood really learned how to use that verticality properly. SW just kinda sits in the middle, and IF takes a lot of Bloods lessons in its design as well.

Yeah, looking at the custom options in FS shows a lot of variables to their AI, but its hard to say how many of them were hardcoded originally (since FS IS technically a rewrite) I know in BloodGDX you can adjust some of those variables manually as well, but the main issue is the startup, or lack thereof. Aggressiveness is essentially the chance of an enemy entering its attack states vs entering its movement states, while ideally having high aggressiveness paired with a short startup time on attacks is the best way to approach enemy AI (especially hitscanners.) Its also the most logical, since someone with a gun would be quick to attack from a distance, but would also take a moment to line up their shot in some manner.

Actually, this just gave me an idea for a minimod, wonder how easy it would be to ZScript: Aggressiveness having a fluid range, where it would be altered by things like the amount of time a target is in LoS, time since last attack, etc. Then, pair it with the spread of weapon fire, having the spread start wide (panic/reaction fire) and having it tighten depending on how long the enemy focuses in its target in between attacks.

I know there are ways of doing most of that manually with tokens and stuff, but I feel like making a universal system that constantly takes all the variables into account could make for some interesting gunplay.

Depends really on how you like to play. The original game isn't designed for it, but the game is also designed to be moddable, and the source code was published for that very reason, so really, you can do what you feel like.

If you want the authentic gameplay and all, and just want to jump in and go, Crispy Doom is a good port, it's just the base game with some lifted limits and quality of life options (double resolution, correct blood splatter color for some monsters, etc). It's worth playing it in its original form, or close to it, just for frame of reference, and it's still really fun that way.
Another option is actually the official new ports, which are mostly very accurate.

Beyond that, you could get GzDoom, and just configure it and mod however you feel like, it really can do anything and everything (except good netplay).

Two hubs for Hexen. Typical Hexen switch-hunt gameplay, sometimes it actually gives you hints ("look for a switch outside", "you hear a bridge rise in the distance") but way too often it does that oh so very Hexen thing where pulling a switch or crossing a linedef in a map does something non-obvious in a completely different map. I don't know what eceleb you're talking about, but its an issue I've had with the engine (and doom's to a much lesser extent) for decades. collision detection is cubic, while billboard representation is flat. The visual squishing isn't the problem so much as sheer inaccuracy of the collision box as a result. Having enemies both attack and/or have erratic movement when this happens is awful. I'm not going to claim it never happens in blood (since it happens in all games with sprites in a 3d environment, to varying degrees) but the general level design avoids it FAR more than Duke does. Underwater fighting just sucks in all build games really.

Basically if the enemies were voxels or models, it would be a moot point, but visual representation having a large disconnect from physical presence is always a bad thing, regardless of whether some trendy youtuber had an opinion on it.

I don't think there is any difference.
The problem with Cultists underwater is that they use the same hit detection as when they're laying on the ground. Being harder to hit when laying on the ground is fine, but underwater it's just a pain in the ass. I think the devs didn't think this through.

And then people pick up the opinion and spread it around.
But the reason I agree with you is we should be avoiding this argument because if we're going to discuss this kind of shit here we should at least meet on good faith and assume we all actually play and understand the games and aren't coming here from youtube reviews

Build games aren't designed like 2020 Doom 2 megawads. You're not supposed to be running around everywhere like a retard. They were designed as cover shooters, most people had no idea what circle strafing was back then; which doesn't mean that it's impossible, just that it wasn't intended.

So yes, running around a in the literal middle of a huge empty space when you know hitscanners have just respawned is stupid

desu I just like his character as a dumb asshole, and his relationship with Hoji, who makes fun of him for being a dumb asshole. I'm hoping that they're going to be transitioning Lo Wang into the more seasoned character he was originally, as well as make him more gruff and cruel with age.

The lack of general interactivity in the new Shadow Warrior games is definitely a good point against them, I want to hope that they address this with Shadow Warrior 3 (they thankfully aren't making it a fucking looter shooter like Shadow Warrior 2 is, Christ), but I'm not confident that they will. I feel more hopeful that they'll give Shadow Warrior 3 actual level design this time, as that seems to be something they accepted as criticism for Shadow Warrior 2.

I'm kind of fine with that desu, I just dislike parts of the original voice act, the accent is a bit too exaggerated, making me think of old Hannah Barbera cartoons (because it really does sound cartoony at times too), and it takes me out of it. It does have a lot of coolness too it though.

First, you've got a bunch of hand drawn sprites and textures, which are of terrific quality, great shading, great color, fantastic detail and designs, almost Strife tier, but then you have a whole bunch of graphics which look oddly shitty and amateurish right next to those, as well as a large number of ones which are crude 3D renders and lazy photoshop filter works.

It's actually a bit like Doom, if there was one more artist working at iD doing graphics and he really sucked.

Not even. Some of the enemies look like shit (like the robots) but some of them actually look pretty good, like some of the mutants. Like, these sprites here, you can see a bunch of them are pre-rendered 3D, and the quality of the models vary, as well as the post processing of the models, sometimes they're decent, sometimes they're pretty fucking bad.

The Uzi for instance, looking at all of its frames together, you can tell it's a 3D model, and not a great one, it's kind of just a flat box with some plain looking Uzi textures slapped on it, but then the centered frames have obviously been worked over heavily by one of the guys who's really competent at spriting, because it looks pretty good and detailed. Looking at one of the reload frames, it looks slightly better than the others on some parts, but the overall model is just as meh, however the hand holding the magazine actually looks great.
Looking at various pickup sprites, they are also high quality.

Then you have the other weapons, the freeze gun looks excellent, the BFG was probably a 3D model which someone painted over to look good, the explosions are amazing looking, but then there's that green zap shotgun thing, which is a mediocre 3D model, with a really ugly and simple muzzle flash, complete with what looks like smoke lazily drawn on with the paint can in an old version of MS Paint. Looking at that big red quadruped, he looks kind of ok, but his death frames are hideous, with the worst splashing.
That Mancubus looking thing is pretty cool, and I love the mutant with the arm gun, not even so much in concept (it's ok), but it's just executed really well, his frames are good, clean, consistent, with fantastic shading and color.

Some of the worst stuff is the 3D without any post processing at all, like that flying head thing, the poison canister thing, the terminatrix thing, and that wall torch which didn't need to be pre rendered at all.

I want to continue with the textures, so BRB in a bit.

Now textures, it's a mix, you'll recognize some of these as having been used in previous games, being stock textures available for license, sometimes they're applied competently, other times not. Some are clearly raped by the limited color palette, not being converted or adapted to it properly, some are stock photos with little to no processing done, and then a large amount of them are some sort of pre-rendered 3D stuff, I think maybe they used some 3D program at the time which may have had an option for generating a continuous and repeating pattern, the end result being stuff which looks really oddly synthetic and not-lifelike. IIRC this may have been used for the Matrix levels, in which case this would actually be a really fitting aesthetic choice, if also incredibly ugly.

Again also, you see some handdrawn stuff, some which looks very good, and some which looks very amateurish. If you look at that lava fall there, it's one of the waterfall textures but recolored, then stretched horizontally for double its width, which gives it that awkward chunky look. Looking at flats, some tile well and look good (you'll recognize these from other games, as said), and some which look crude and bad, being hand drawn or pre-rendered by one of the amateurs on staff, and don't tile well at all. You also have a handful of textures which are pictures of three dimensional environments, which is something that wouldn't work visually unless seen only from a front angle, which isn't the case in game for all of these.

There's something so very delightfully 90s about all this stuff, in both good and bad ways.

Well, I could tell you go open up Strife.wad with Slade, and to look at the textures and sprites there. They did some stuff as pre-rendered 3D, and some as stock textures, but if you look at the handdrawn stuff there, it's actually quite incredible, it's very consistent, the shading and lighting is very clean, the palette is used expertly.
In Doom, if you look closely at the sprites there, you can spot a little bit of color banding here and there, just a little, but it's there, most noticeable on some of the gibbing sprites, which are slightly lazy (but workable). For Strife's gore, there's no such shortcuts, it's all very expertly shaded with no banding or color bleeding. The way sparks and lightning light up some of the sprites also looks very clean.
There's also a lot of frames which, again, are very consistent in their motion and positioning, which makes all the hand drawn animation look very smooth and clean. Doom also actually has fairly smooth animations as is, though the sprite offsets there are pretty sloppy, thus they can look more choppy at times than the animations actually are (the Spritefixing project lets you fix that).

A neat thing is that Strife also used a palette trick to render certain shades and colors at fullbright, like Duke Nukem 3D, so you get certain elements glowing in the dark, so to say. Strife does take a couple of shortcuts here and there, but the artists did a pretty good job of covering that up.

Mother said there'd be days like this. You broke a few national and international laws. So what's the big deal?! Hacking is what hackers do! But seems like you hacked into the wrong database this time. Ultra-secret and all that. Genemp Corporation. Some biotech something or other. Database called itself GENIE. Something peculiar in that. Awfully sophisticated database. Especially if it caught you in the middle of hacking, and you're the best, it's eerily sophisticated. Like it can actually think, or something.

>So they send you packing… to the federal pen. For the rest of your natural life. No computer, no gear, nothing. Total drag. Cement and bars, and the other guys inside aren't exactly your average beefcakes. They catch a glance at your cyber-jockey derrière and get a wet gleam in their eye. So what you do for the next twelve months is hit the weight room--hard and fast! You pump iron like your life depended on it--and it does. You learn to sleep with one eye open. Punching the heavy bag becomes your breakfast; tae-kwon-do your lunch, and for dinner… well, you gotta eat sometime. And practice? Plenty. 'Cause these boys got a gleam in their eyes that won't go away. But how you've changed! Over once scarecrow arms, muscles wrap tight and heavy, and you've got a fu-kick that makes the boys call you "Sir". Before you were just an average pencil-necked geek, now you could grace the front of Muscle and Guns Magazine. And just in time, too.

Couldn't give you all that much insight, since we don't have all of those graphics (or, the stuff that was released was all they got done before retooling it into ROTT), but I'd say it mostly has that cartoony aesthetic of Wolf3D, fairly stark colors, simple but competent shading. It doesn't look too bad, mostly, though overall I'm glad we got the ROTT that we did, and Wolfenstein would instead head towards RTCW.

Best-looking, perhaps. Preacher has my favorite gameplay/level design, with Valiant a close second. Preacher has ammo spread thinly across the map so you have to keep moving, alerting more enemies, or you run out of ammo; and Valiant seems to be masterfully designed for pure fun, as it flows extremely well and is generous with rockets and shells (never enough super chaingun ammo though!) and health and mid-tier enemies

* - E2M18's midi was actually a midi stewboy made for Interception (which came out a year before BTSX E2's beta), as stewboy accidentally sent in the wrong midi by mistake. The intended midi for BTSX which wasn't used ended up in Ancient Aliens MAP08

Abyss of Pandemonium is interesting. Some of the monsters there went on to be used in other mods, notably the juggernaut in the mod mission pack Travail. I really like it, but history isn't crazy about AoP. It's totally fine, it's got some new weapons and new monsters, but if someone plays Abyss directly after Scourge and Dissolution, they'd have to temper their expectations just a hair. A shame because it has some neat tricks; I think it's the first release to modify nightmare ogre behaviors to not just act like a turret when the player is in view. They'll shoot a volley of grenades, then try to close the gap, whereas Quake and mission pack ogres will default to turret mode on nightmare. As far as I know, this behavior wasn't replicated again until Arcane Dimensions in 2016, and then the mod Copper's release a bit after. That's quite impressive when you consider AoP came out in 1998. The axe's damage and behavior was modified to be more than just a fun thing to use when you're bored, it's got a bitching soundtrack, the bosses are really neat, the level design is average-good - I really fucking like it, but most do not care for it.

Shrak: some neat qc (shell casings, damaged skins, changing hub, hook), mundane levels, really bad models and animations, annoying flying eyes.
Abyss of Pandemonium: footsteps, rain, destructibles, custom gibbing, an entire knockoff-Q1 texture set. most new things shown off in the first level, new guns impractical and gimmicky.
Malice: a full edgy futuristic TC. actually pretty neat, but balance is weird (normal is too easy, hard is way too bulletspongey).

That's Wolfenstein 3D alright. I think the original game has the majority of its mileage in the first episode, E2 and E3 add new enemies, and use some new textures, but otherwise it's largely more of the same. E4, E5, and E6, The Nocturnal Missions, don't add anything really new aside from bosses and some new textures, they also have some of the most fucking tedious level design. Spear Of Destiny adds a little bit more stuff, but it's a lot of the same as E1, E2, and E3.

Maybe give the first episode a go, then two and three if you really enjoyed it, but honestly it really is a VERY plain game compared to most things after it, it really doesn't develop much at all after that, and is largely just more of the same.

The Abyss. In that level, the level design purposely misleads the player so that he can only see the correct path to take for progression when he backtracks. That, and the theme of the map, really contributes to the adventure feel.

Yeah, right at home in a circus freakshow, people used to pay money to see hideous and deformed people put on display, or people with weird body mods. Maybe the intent is that it's a tranny, but being a circus performer all bets are off, and unless the game makes a constant deal about the tranny, I can't imagine it mattering.
